K-pop "fans" and all that entails

Post by showraniy »

Forgive my sad excuse at attempting to start discussion on this, but I'm interested in this topic from the perspective of a very new K-pop fan who has paused more than a few times at some of the lengths Korean K-pop fans will go through for or against any given music group.

For those unsure of what I'm talking about, "antis" as they are called seem to be very prominent in the South Korean music scene, and are often in the news for sabotaging artists in a variety of ways. Less dangerous cases that I know of include Tohoshinki's Changmin being hit with a purse and SNSD's leader Taeyeon reading hateful comments while on radio, but there are a variety of more serious anti attacks such as an anti lacing U-Know Yunho's drink with super glue among many others.

I've read that fans and anti-fans are so intense in South Korea because of its small size and cultural isolation as far as popculture goes, but still find this topic interesting no matter how many explanations come up or how many strange (and pretty horrid) attacks occur against artists.

My knowledge is obviously pretty limited on the subject, so I'm curious about the insight of other members here since I've lurked through the other K-pop threads and read some insightful things about other issues. Does anyone know when the anti "culture" even got started?

I can't speak to when it started, but it's certainly nothing new. There are laws that have been made specifically because of the trend and "netizens" and "antis" are well known things that are part of every day life as far as news reports in Korea are concerned.

It's obviously not just Korea though as I'm sure you can remember the Nacchi photobook shit (which if I remember correctly was actually a joke, but there was plenty of shit like it that I just can't remember atm) and http://kimchilicious.wordpress.com/2009/07...for-tvxq-yunho/ in Japan.

There's a good part of Strong Heart (lots of stories involve netizens and antis harassing stars there) where Solbi (anti magnet) was talking about a comment she read just after a star had committed suicide due to the relentless attacks of antis that was something along the lines of "She had the decency to die, why are you still here?" on Solbi's mini hompy. She said she responded with (again can't remember exactly) "Would you really be happy if I died tomorrow?" to which the guy shrugged it off with the whole "I just said it as a joke, don't take shit so seriously" that everyone on every forum ever does when they get to the point where they finally get called out for being a giant piece of shit.

That's more or less (at least for me) the only rationalization that can explain antis. There have been several comments on shows along the lines of "they're just a bunch of young kids who don't know what they're saying is actually hurtful so don't pay them any attention." While that's all well and good to say, regardless of what age people are, they are still hurtful comments that as they get stacked more and more it gets to you no matter how resilient you are.

The terrible comments though are just a part of the problem though being as there are legit physically harmful things that antis are doing to people. I just can't fathom why people say "We want you to be you!" or "I like it when idols are just themselves" and then turn around and freak out when they say the FUCKING LIKE A GUY. She didn't say, he's going to be mine and no one else can have him! She said I LIKE him, which is exactly what every other fucking fan says, but somehow since that person happens to be an idol they get death threats for it.

K fuck that getting too pissed of thinking about the scum of the earth haha, I'll post more later probably.

*edit*

A large part of the reason I feel so strongly about antis is because my life was basically shit because of the same kind of stuff throughout middle and high school. Every day was basically comment after comment that by themselves were like HAHA HE MADE FUN OF YOU type of shit, but when that piles up day in and day out and no one seems to understand wtf is going on but you, suicide seems like a pretty viable option to make it stop. I like to think that maybe the people who made my life shit didn't really know they were doing it because that helps me to not want to kill the entire human race like I used to want to, but it also helps me understand where antis comments come from. Also being a veteran of the internet helps haha. I assume that most of the comments really are just coming from people who thinks it's funny to talk shit to people and that it isn't really even going to be read by the person. It's like someone saying a comment behind someone's back to fit into a group of people when they don't really mean the comment. "look how bad I am, I just told this bitch to die! haha" not really thinking that the person would read it or react to it, but I hope that when the time comes that a celebrity really does kill themselves because of relentless comments like that the people that made the comments would wake the fuck up and realize it's a fucking life they're talking about. Sadly, that doesn't seem like it happens since it's already been repeated several times already.

The internet is a free zone when it comes to opinions and voicing them, but some opinion-extremists are really ridiculous.

It's obviously horribly stupid. It's as if I'd go to kusumi's blog (if she has one) and tell her what I think about her. I just don't see the point in doing that.

The dumbest people are those who BUY and thus support the singers/actors/whoever and then destroy the merchandise/CDs etc.

Yeah exactly haha, I can understand not liking a person, or even despising them for whatever reason, but going out of your way to make the person feel like shit is just

Indeed.

And it's also not a "language barrier" thing, since I have western actors and singers that I think are extremely dumb and annoying, but I don't go to their fanboards, blogs and so on to flame them with my hatred.

btw, is it similarly extreme in the west ? I don't follow any blogs etc., so I don't know.

EDIT:

I've seen the Taeyeon radio vid before and it makes me sad.

I can't stand K-pop fans and antis. They're honestly some of the most angry, irrational people I've seen on the internet and I have no idea why. What I especially don't understand is why English fans behave like such arseholes online. You'd think that they'd see the absurd lengths that the Korean fans go to for their idols and reject that, but no, I get the feeling that they'd do the exact same thing in their position, especially after reading the stuff people write on Allkpop. Being "young" isn't an excuse for the hateful, hurtful actions that some of these Korean fans take.

On a pettier and more personal note, I can't stand the word "netizen". I haven't seen it anywhere else other than South Korea, and I wish it would go away. It's a terrible word. I think just being referred to as a "netizen" would make me reconsider how I spend my free time.

Echoing this whole post. ESPECIALLY the "netizen" part. Holy fucking shit I have not heard that word used outside of Korea since like, 2001.

Well netizen is purely a South Korean word, so that explains why you haven't seen it elsewhere (unless I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure I'm not)

Yeah, obviously the antis are terrible, but I can't stand the (pro-)fans and their fucking fanclubs either. I've always considered it a really bad sign that fans will cut out any part of a show that doesn't have their precious member/group in it, so you'll get these "SNSD cut" and "SuJu cut", or livecams that just show Sunny with big black bars over the other members. Really obnoxious and a reminder of what kind of people you're dealing with.

In 2009, during the Dream concert there were several injuries trying to scramble for good seats. Also, fanclubs of other groups than SNSD chose to attend their concert but remain silent during it (due to some scandal along the lines of "Tiffany is rude", or "they worked with DBSK", I don't remember exactly). So every "fan" in Korea is ALSO an anti, that's the gist of it.

I agree that the Western fans of Kpop are no better at all, although they at least can't cause too much harm. But yeah I avoid reading anything written by a Western fan. It's guaranteed to be psychotic.

I always thought the girls wouldn't read those comments, but it turns out they really do, and of course if you read shit like that it really affects you, especially as a teenager who just debuted after years of training. You can see this happen in the SNSD pre-debut documentary, where their first stage was a dance stage, and afterwards they were accused of being just pretty girls with no talent. Some of them cried over that. Of course that's mild compared to what the antis will do, but it does show that their fucking comments actually do cause emotional harm. I sometimes wonder if that's why it's so bad in Korea--cause it works. You'd never reach Ke$ha by posting a comment on the internet, but in Korea, you can reach Solbi.

It's not a Korean term. To my knowledge, it was one of the many, many stupid words that people invented after the internet took off. Here's an English-language 1997 book that uses the word in its title.

I still don't re-watch the Girls Go to School stuff because it's so depressing with that anti shit after their first live. The most depressing part of that was that they were all kinda like, yeah I totally understand why they said that. Acting like antis somehow have legit points is insane. Although the comments about SKE48 or w/e coming to Korea are actually mostly true I would assume since Korea values talent in a much more serious way over just likability. ( http://www.tokyohive.com/2010/09/ske48-hop...rent-welcoming/ ) Still really no need to go spam whatever message board with stuff telling them to gtfo, although most of those comments don't seem insane to me, so maybe that's why it doesn't seem as bad.

Even if those comments are true I find it funny that people think that the Korean music industry is a goldmine that those fuckers from Japan are just DYING to break into. Like their top acts aren't flocking to Japan to make money since Korea's music industry is barely even profitable. SKE48 isn't trying to become mainstream in Korea. Even if they tried and did, they're still making more money in Japan.

There was also the Kanon/SNSD "fresh leg 'scandal'" that had everyone's panties in a bunch. S/mileage's PV comments on Youtube were the biggest shitfest of retards I have ever seen.

I would agree that Korean nationalism plays a big role in their antipathy to Japanese groups. Even compared to Japan, they've a lot of catching up to do on that front. I think it's partly to do with the country's relative youth. They only ascended to first world status in the late twentieth century and haven't quite reached the same stage of social development as other modernised countries. There's also the fact that Japan has historically been at odds with Korea since the occupation, so it's a common target of nationalists on both sides.

The people at Allkpop were surprisingly tame about the SKE thing (although there is some "Japanese idols are all worse than Korean idols in every regard so they should fuck off" kind of stuff floating about) but Trike is right about the "fresh legs" debacle. I started reading the comments at Allkpop and saw this on page 1:

LOL what’s with the fresh legs? their legs look fat and thick. -.- and they look like those AV stars.
She’s only 15? She’s got quite a mouth for a fifteen year old talking about her seniors.
ummm… unfortunately, i’ve never heard of this idol group… =___=

automatically, the others win imo cuz i at least can support them because i know them

anyway, SNSD should whoop them cuz they just said they’re fresher. don’t care what they mean, but i wanna see if SNSD responds to this and what happens
So yeah, fuck 'em.

I agree with everything above, anti-fans and fans are scary and especially those Korean netizens 'cause all they do is dig up crap and then go "Look look this idol isn't perfect, he/she was an ugly baby" or something like that, it bugs me how they manage have so much free time.

This is exactly the case with pretty much everything. I've had so many shitty experiences with older Korean people in this country. So many of them are such arrogant, nationalist shitheads it blows my mind. I was in a Korean grocery store that sold videos one time and when I started looking through the videos on the wall, the old Korean guy who ran the store decided to tell me that I don't speak Korean so I shouldn't look at any of those videos. I just about snapped on this old fuck, but instead I took my leave and did not go back to that store anymore.

How can that letter possibly say all of that? Is there a second page or something? I guess you have to write extra big if you're using a tampon crayon.

Am I the only one who gets blaring 404s every single time anyone links allkpop? It's either so slow loading that my computer gives up or it just 404s at me.

And not that I really need to say it, but for the record, that letter is a million times creepier now. Here I was thinking it was a hate letter--and maybe I'm used to people doing crazy shit in the name of hate--but a fan letter written in period and sprinkled with pubes is a new level of blown mind here.
I interpret that shop owner's words as unintentionally discriminatory and condescending, but that's still pretty shitty on his part. Were you living in Korea at the time or is this a store stateside that specialized in a Korean demographic?

Nah, it wasn't unintentional, I left out the first part where he asked me if I understood Korean, and when I responded with "yes" he said "no you don't." That's intentional. But yes, it was in America, it was just a small Korean grocery store, not an H-mart or anything.

Yeah, the site seems to be shittily coded (or has some shitty servers).

For me it loads the full page, but then says that it can't find the page and then goes to a 404. So I always have to hit the "cancel" button when the site finished loading.

hmm, while I agree it isn't a well coded site, and the servers have problems at high traffic times, I never have any 404 issues really. Sometimes it takes a bit to load, but most of the time it loads instantly.

Oh god, I knew I shouldn't have peeked into this thread.

Way to embrace stereotypes, folks. I thought this board was smarter than that.
No.

I've had so many shitty experiences with older White people in my own country. So many of them are such arrogant, nationalist, and racist shitheads it blows my mind. I was in a Nordstroms two weeks ago and when I started picking up the shoes, the old white salesclerk looked me up and down, then wouldn't look me in the eye, and refused to help me. And when he did, he shouted at me very slowly that these were expensive. I just about snapped on this old fuck, but instead I took my leave and did not go back to that store anymore. White people fucking suck and that completely explains why youtube comments are batshit insane. Wait, what?

Well, I'm sorry if my comments offended you. It was largely speculative. I'll refrain from commenting on Korean nationalism again in such a context. I don't have any problems with Korean people, and I don't mean to imply to that there aren't racist morons in the West as well, simply that some Korean K-pop fans really seem to hate the idea of Japanese artists debuting and I wondered why that hate was so pronounced. If it isn't national pride, it isn't national pride, but I was just entertaining the notion.

Exactly what I was going to say, but since this thread is about Korean culture, I used a specific example to fit the subject. There have been plenty of times I've wanted to punch old white people in the face for being racist shitheads against Asians, but that's not what we were talking about here.
