What's a repackage album?

What's a repackage album?



I know at a basic level it's adding ~3 songs to an album and trying to sell you the same shit they sold you 3 months prior, but why do they do it? Do repackages sell and chart well relative to the originals? Why does only KPop seem to do this? Why is it an acceptable practice?

WHAT IS REPACKAGE ALBUM? A miserable pile of songs.



Yeah I never quite got this either, although to be fair albums in Korea are about the same price as a single in Japan, so paying that kinda money for 2 or 3 songs isn't that crazy to me. Maybe it's a way to crank the total sales figure of the album? Does that work that way?

Why do other companies feel the need to release 2-4 versions of the same single instead of boxing it all onto one album? Money, money, money!



AKB48 and to a lesser extent H!P do it all the time. Release a single, but add something different to the same single and make it a new version. You sell more.



People are sucker enough to buy it, so companies keep on doing it. Now more then ever because CD sales are so low and such.

I kind of assumed it was done when a group got really popular, and they want to get a bunch of sales off of the older material. But I guess it's more like what PQ said - it's Kpop's equivalent to Jpop's "Limited A, Limited B, Limited C, Regular, Regular First Press" editions. Just with more time in between so it seems ~*New*~.

I find that a lot of kpop albums are basically the equivalent of a best of album. They release singles and mini-albums all the time and Korea's music scene is based more on TV performances then real concerts. So when they release an album, they a few limited songs to chose from since they don't want to perform the same thing again. I see a lot that singers/groups have a time limit for each single they release, once it's up they either pick another song from their album or repackage it and release it again with new material if they have some lackluster songs they don't feel will work well on television.
