Hm that is interesting. I think it isn't limited to S/mileage though. I think minimoni/W had some food-related stuff -- always the younger groups.
The food motif falls into the
endearing stereotype that women are obsessed with food in general while simultaneously being objects for others to consume. I think for teen/adult women (and esp in the West), the stereotype morphs into this idea that women must withhold from food, stay on a perma-diet, etc if they don't want to be the fat, bonbon face stuffing wife.
However, I noticed that food is different (but still very gendered) for young girls in Japan: cute young girls can play up their very very feminine trait of being obsessed with sweets. There is soo much of this in Japan and it wasn't surprising that Tsuji-Kago built an image on being manic-candy-eating chubbies. And men are generally not allowed to admit to liking sweet things because it is supposed to be unmanly and
not natural.
