Re: Lets work on blog!project! - ARCHIVED - SEE FIRST POST FOR IMPORTANT INFO AND LINKS
Sorry, by "recap" I mean collect all of the blogs as they are and bunch them into monthly units.
Goto the website now and try to read all of anyone's blog for just March for example.
A simple page to explain to the nuance of the phrase, not sure if it's wanted or needed.

That's already doable with the calendar. I don't know why you can't click the current month though.
TnB, I made that icon as maple.

- A section explaining commonly used Japanese expressions that don't really have a correct English translation / nuance
Personally, I gave up on translating "yoroshiku onegaishimasu." Everything else gets some kind of English spin though. I think this should be left up to the translator's discretion.
I usually figure out a way to do that, but with things like otsukaresama... The girls tend to slang and "cuteify"(? XD) common words like that quite a bit, like Reina's Otsuka-Reina, or Saki's "Ohayossu" or something like that. I don't like losing some effect the girls are trying to do there, so a lot of times I leave it as is.
Although, I did explain "Ohayossu" in a footnote in an early post (she uses it fairly often), and when I saw, say, "ureshimizu" too, I translated it and then added the original as a note in the text. I really try to keep that original word in there somewhere at least for flavor - a lot of it just really depends how often it's used.

What the heck is "pee"/ピー??????

Thanks Saya.
So Yuuka makes SO LITTLE SENSE in her blog - it is really confusing. Wada is completely straight forward though - it is like reading a Japanese textbook haha.

Wada is fast becoming my favourite member of S/mileage
Kanon's blog feels a little forced and cold, might just be me but I get the feeling she isn't really into the whole blog thing.
I'm going to be really busy with my festival in the next few days, so if you don't see any kanon updates that's why, I will try and get them done after it's finished.
The festival is called Dekayama or Seihakusai if you want to google it.

Re: Lets work on blog!project! - ARCHIVED - SEE FIRST POST FOR IMPORTANT INFO AND LINKS
Well it seems the discussion is of Reina wearing pink nails to the Yamaguchi live, and then lying about it in the MC saying she did it since they're in Yamaguchi and Sayu's color is pink Sayu calls her out on it after the live though, since she was sure Reina was lying and she just by chance wore pink that day. The quote is Reina admitting it :) and saying she might as well take the pink off anyway since it got messed up a bit.
As for the Fukuoka-ben, one of the most common things (and first I learned reading Reina's blog XD) is the sentence ending "ya ken", which is like "da kara" XD

Anyone have a better guess what "pyontsun hair" (ピョンつんヘア) could be referring to in English terms? Saki has a picture with it too that's attached to the entry: http://blog.mm-bbs.org/shimizu-saki/11354
I just did some kind of combination of pyonpyon (bouncy? when referring to hair...) and tsuntsun (straight?) but thought I'd run it by everyone.

Not to be a dick, but more than a few blogs of far more popular members are going untranslated. Seems fruitless to translate the blog of some random Egg when few people beyond the translator would bother reading it when members with a much larger fanbase are being ignored.
Just on Blogproject alone:
Maimi's hasn't been updated in a month.
Reina's hasn't been touched in a month.
Airi's for 2 weeks.
Mano for over a month.
Most of Dream MM have blogs that aren't being translated as well.

What happened to Em-El?
Also, yeah I kind of get what you mean but...in the end, we're not *hired* to do a service to fans. We're part of the fandom too and should just pick whomever we'd like to cover and that should be the end of it. And if it bothers you, you can just sign up to translate someone
I'd prefer sporadic but long term translations. I worry that rokun or someone meticulously covering the heavy bloggers (like Sayu, who does like 10 a day) are just going to burn out in 6 months.

Re: Lets work on blog!project! - ARCHIVED - SEE FIRST POST FOR IMPORTANT INFO AND LINKS
I'm looking at it from the perspective of an editor of a publication. Yeah, I realize it's all volunteer work and we aren't making people do anything, but I'm thinking more about the overall situation. Taking care of the more popular blogs gets us more well known. If we're more well known, we'll have more readers. With more readers comes more potential volunteers/translators. With more translators, then we could cover absolutely everyone.
Yeah, I have the luxury of being able to read their blogs in Japanese, but it's gotta bum out a non-Japanese speaking fan to see us translate one or two of a popular members posts and then stop, especially when it's showing up on the side bar with a "new" tag next to it, getting their hopes up when they visit the site.

I know Em-El went on vacation for a bit after the earthquake since his workplace was shut down. He seems to be pretty busy these days.
As for heavy bloggers, it really just comes down to time management and making sure you've chosen a blog that's interesting to you. And of course having the type of personality for that type of work xD Lately I've been skipping any of Sayu's entries I deem boring or fairly irrelevant to overseas fans. I.e. no generic 'good morning' / 'i ate this' posts and no 'I'm going to be on this show today, please watch!'
I think it's important for people to pick bloggers they're interested in rather than just whoever is most popular. I see Al's point on one hand - work on a random egg's blog is going to mostly be in vain unless you really enjoy translating for the sake of translating and couldn't care less if anyone read it or not. BUT at the same time, if the translator has no interest in Maimi/Reina/etc, they're never going to put in the time to translate those blogs anyway. If it turns out that the translator likes both a popular girl and the less known girl, then yeah I'd say go for the popular girl first.
p.s. Can I get some more gree icons uploaded whenever someone is free?
:berri:
:raburabu: (if that's taken, anything else works. I can't think of a good name for this one xD)

Yup! This is the only reason why I have faithfully translated Maeda (even when she's incomprehensible) and I'm shocked to realize how much I like Wada now.
I guess this means I'm taking over Mano until Em-El returns to the internet I will take a look at it starting tomorrow.
Also, I am writing this at 4:30am. Wtf happened to me.

Re: Lets work on blog!project! - ARCHIVED - SEE FIRST POST FOR IMPORTANT INFO AND LINKS
Not to be a dick, but more than a few blogs of far more popular members are going untranslated. Seems fruitless to translate the blog of some random Egg when few people beyond the translator would bother reading it when members with a much larger fanbase are being ignored.
Most of Dream MM have blogs that aren't being translated as well.
You're both right, but in our current situation Eri is more right. We can't and won't force people to translate blogs they don't care about. And with relatively few translators and their schedules dictated by their free time, good will and few other things we're not in the position to kick anyone out for not doing the blog we ask them to do or even to risk them burning out. You know, each one of you translators is a unique precious snowflake to us.
I'm looking at it from the perspective of an editor of a publication. Yeah, I realize it's all Volumina work and we aren't making people do anything, but I'm thinking more about the overall situation. Taking care of the more popular blogs gets us more well known. If we're more well known, we'll have more readers. With more readers comes more potential volunteers/translators. With more translators, then we could cover absolutely everyone.
But as you're free to translate the blogs that you feel like translating, you're also free to consider Al's reasonable suggestion.
We will compile a list of available blogs (which is already kinda ready in another thread) and who's translating what which will then be updated in the first post of this thread. This should make it easier both for the translators to plan their work and for us to manage it to the extent possible.
I think Berry is keeping track of it, as well as of who's away and for how long, it's just not in any organised form. I'll check with her when she's less busy.
Edited to add because Berry asked me:
Remember there's still some 'rules' we'd like to follow and an important one is:
If you need or want to take a break from translating for whatever reason, don't just disappear of the face of the Internets but please let us know. This is important for us and the translators to plan the work and avoid possible overlaps and conflicts. Thanks. Effectively communicate! This means let us know when you're going away awhile. That way someone can take over your posts. If you need to go away for an extended time, it's OK as well. Just let us know how long. If it ends up being longer than your estimate, then please update us. If you're just no longer interested in translating anymore, of course that's fine as well. The key thing is to LET US KNOW!

Well I have to say that recent personal experiences have shaped what I'm doing now... After Sakuracon my Berryz fandom is burning (lol), and so I've worked to try and get at least most of them done, though they're very erratic in how they update (Saki usually does 3 or 4 a day on her Ameba, but on Serend each member can do anywhere from 0-4+ on a given day). It seems they're calming down with the Serend updates though, so I'll probably fall back into doing only a few updates or so at most a day from there. Between that and Saki's, it's actually not taking up too much time. Serend updates are thankfully short, but emoticon issues still slow them up. And they have way too many custom emoticons to try and get them added here (for example, Miyabi has made a few emoticons of pictures of herself so far lol).
Therefore, since I've done some of C-ute's in the past, I could pick a few of them up... though I wouldn't do all 5 like I used to. At least they're pretty stable in each member posting one per day. Actually the main reason I stopped is because I was aware of timely translations being done on other sites, so I knew they were at least out there for non-Japanese fans. Maimi's is translated on at least two fairly widely-known sites, and the rest on another. I enjoy doing Airi's so might leave it at her... the others actually have fairly short, quick entries but adding any others just keeps increasing it.
As for Reina, I'd agreed with Sherry (who has her own site for it) to split her up a bit, but she stopped updating, and since that was around the time I was picking up C-ute's, for time management purposes I stopped updating my part as well... Reina has way too much daily volume for me to do it all in addition to the others I want to do (and IMO she has more frivolous posts too, lol), so I'm not sure what to say about her.
That said, beginning next week for several days I'll have less free time to do any of this work, though I'll try to at least keep up with Saki and such which I've always kept up with. ^^;
Oh, and TnB: thanks for your input :D that's kind of what I thought too. Saki's actually started to use several "unique" words like that which make things difficult, especially to describe various styles and poses and such lol. Reminds me of how Yuuka's is described. And yes, many times when I try googling an odd word, her blog entry is the first result lol.
Edit: After thinking about it a little, I think I will pick up Airi's and Chisato's blogs again, with an option for Nakky. Not sure if I'll be able to keep them up during that busy week I mentioned is coming up (Airi may only post once a day, but her entries are loooong), but I'll keep it going through other times.
It'll also help if I can get those emoticons loaded I mentioned before:

In unrelated news...I finally figured out how to get the icons off Risa's blog! It would just come up as blank.gif before, but now I figured it out
