Huge Earthquake Hits Japan

Post by Tsuki »

A massive earthquake struck the eastern coast of Japan Friday afternoon, triggering powerful tsunamis that washed away property and cars. (...) Television stations showed footage of tsunami waves, measuring upwards of 10 feet, pulling cars and cargo tanks into the water. Waves crushed the mostly rural shoreline near the epicenter, leveling buildings. Even in Tokyo, 235 miles south of the epicenter, rail lines were halted and business workers headed outdoors, terrified by the aftershocks. Phone lines were down.

(I am sure NHK is jammed right now)

I hope all our members in Japan are doing okay, I know we have people living near the epicenter. I can't imagine what this was like.

All of the various HP managers have said the members are okay.

I was in a big one that hit the Kansai area in 2004 and it was the single scariest thing I've lived through. Hopefully the aftershocks and tsunami damage will be minimal.

Everytime I think of an Earthquake in Japan now I think of that anime they made Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, back in 2009 They made it more like a service announcement worst case scenario for what if an earthquake more then 7.0 hit Tokyo.

"The series' setting is based upon the prediction that there is 70% or higher chance of an earthquake measuring 7.0 magnitude on the Richter scale hitting Tokyo in the next 30 years, with the series illustrating the consequences of a 8.0 scale earthquake affecting the city."

This was pretty damn close to Tokyo and it came in at 8.9! D: That's some serious power!

According to H!O all the H!P girls are fine thank goodness and all H!P stuff has been canceled for the weekend. (To expand on what Al just said.)

I hope everyone over there is safe that's from the BBS as well.

I know China had an earthquake to this week as a person from work is still over there. So the whole plate was doing somersaults so it was only a matter of time before Japan got something too.

I am as well, he's closer than Tokyo to the epicenter, and people there felt a lot of aftershocks. I sent him a text, but most phone lines are down. Hopefully we'll hear good news from him soon.

I am worried for Em-El too. I am in the Kansai region and it only registered as a 4.0. I was in a karaoke box with friends, dancing and singing, and I thought I was sick (because I had lunch a hour prior) or it was us dancing too much when it was happening. But, we looked at each other and went, "Oh shit, it's an earthquake" and then got frightened. We didn't know how severe it was until we got home later on. But, there was no damage here.

I am really freaking about our BBSers in Japan. Em-El hasn't been on AIM. No surprise I guess, but I'm fretting at work. Can someone with my number text me if we hear from him, since I can't keep checking the board at work?

I think Emel lives a little bit inland and not at the coast, so hopefully at least the Tsunami water did not get to his area.

I heard from another friend in Ibaraki, same prefecture as Em-El. She says they're still feeling aftershocks, but they're ok - so I'm hoping that bodes well for Em-El also. Plum, I don't have your number, but if you wanted to PM it to me (or a work email) I can send you news as soon as I hear anything.

Over on the DVD Talk forum in a thread called "If there was a fire..what would you save?," a fellow in Tokyo posted photos of his apartment after the quake.

Scroll down to post #30 by a poster dubbed "manicsounds" and you'll see the pix.

I'm really worried about Em-El now too and just about everyone in Japan for that matter.

From what I hear, the Nuclear power plant is melting down and there's a train missing off the coast that they can't find . And then I saw the video on CNN with that whirlpool. Of course I can't keep the computer on all day I keep sneaking on and looking for updates.

Also the video of the Tsunami's... horrible.

I've been going to the CNN Live Blog for updates.

^ Re: the power plant: I've heard that the area has been evacuated though a meltdown is highly unlikely. A number of the cooling towers were off for maintenance and the remaining towers are in decent shape.

I hope EmEl is okay...

Radiation level rising in Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant turbine building, Kyodo News Agency reports.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing with a nuclear power plant?

Also

The death toll from the massive earthquake in Japan will likely surpass 1,000, the Kyodo News Agency reported.

I know that's a LOT of people but considering the amount of people condensesed in Japan and around Tokyo, that's not a lot, right? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... pyeyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Radiation levels rising are a bad thing. But it shouldn't become another Chernobyl.

Seventh worst earthquake in the history of the world, my god. The fact that the death toll estimate is so low is testament to their engineering. Unbelievable.

@NPP; If the rising radiation level is measured outside of the NPP, then that's a very bad thing. The worst that could happen would be a nuclear meltdown like in Tschernobyl, but of course that's an absolute worst-case-scenario.

In NPP Fukushima is right now running on internal "battery" electricity and this also means it's cooling system can not run properly infinitely.

Apparently Miyagi prefecture has a lot of fires.

This earthquake can not be easily compared to the Kanto or Kobe earthquakes (and their death toll) because of it's location and especially since the Kanto earthquake 1923 the housing and overall security in Japan has increased enormously. If this earthquake would have taken place in the Sagami bay, where the Kanto earthquake was, there would have been far more deaths, that's for sure.

Also, the people now are way better organized than back then. People know they have to put out their gas etc.

Incidentally I just wrote a paper about the housing in the first part of the 20th century in Tokyo and also wrote about how the Kanto earthquake changed the landscape of Tokyo forever.

EDIT:

Also, here is a stream of TBS News HD:

Thank god EmEl is okay. I also knew someone in Ibaraki who is okay as well. Do we have any other members not accounted for yet?

This all seems unreal to me. Especially the nuclear power plant issues, which never occurred to me since all the earthquakes and tsunamis have been hitting underdeveloped countries without nuclear power.

I think it is safe to say that thanks to the preparedness of Japan (and its investment in earthquake proofing) that the deathtoll isn't significantly higher by now, but I know there are still many missing.

I have a friend in Fukushima, I was so worried, but she is okay. Luckily my host family is okay too because they live in Kyuushuu.

This is seriously too sad though, so many people lost their lives, and I'm really worried for Japan right now. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />
