Portal 2

Post by sadude »

It's out! Keep all your goddamn spoilers in here. Thanks.

From http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011 ... cience.ars :
Don't read reviews!

I'm going out of my way to say as little as possible about the game itself or the things found within, but I can't guarantee everyone out there will be so polite. I'm usually fine with the idea of reading a review written by someone you trust as a way to gauge a game, and in fact the idea that you should do that is kind of a big part of why I earn a paycheck, but in this case it's much better to go in completely blind.

There are twists and turns and things to explore and surprises to find, and if even one of those is hinted at in a review—and I've heard that people are getting spoiled at a fantastic rate—the game won't be quite as fun for you when you play it yourself. If you're already going to buy it, just buy it and read the reviews after you beat it, if you must at all.

Enjoy! See you in three weeks, thread.

Edit: This is awesome.

I've already been spoilered most of the plot and its twists.

I wasn't too eager to play it anyway, eventhough the first Portal game was interesting to play. However, imho it was clear from the beginning P2 was going to turn out as a rather short game, so I haven't bought it yet and will wait until it's below 20€.

Despite getting good reviews, there is also a lot of bad mouthing from the community: (some of which is fully justified)

I've started playing it (no spoilers, I swear!). I love this game so bad. It's written impeccably, performed and executed to perfection, and it's just plain fun. I think I'm halfway done with the single-player? I feel like I'm running through the puzzles pretty easily, but I'm ready for much harder, much larger puzzles. I don't know how long it truly will be until I finish it, but I think it'd be worth $30-40.

In fact, the only reason I'm not playing right now it because my computer is doing that overheating thing again. Whatever.

I seriously have been smiling nonstop as I played it. Everything works so well.

Yes, I am playing and it is indeed excellent. I'm trying not to rush it, so I'm avoiding spoilers by mostly avoiding threads like this one.

What system are you all playing it on. I don't have a PS3 so it's out of the question, so my choices are PC and XBOX. I know PC is the best choice of all the systems, but I might go for XBOX so I can play with my dad and friends if the graphics really aren't that bad.

^I'm playing on PC. It runs really well on my 2 year old laptop.

So, I finished single-player just now. Wow-ish is my reaction. I had some doucher online spoil it for me, so truly avoid reviews and /v/ until you finish. I wish I did Still, even knowing how the plot ultimately resolves, I was more than pleased. There were definitely a couple of fun bits that I didn't see coming. I'd like to do co-op at some point. LEVEL YELLOW SPOILER: Because I'd really love to see how the two little bots play into the whole deus ex machina thing right at the end. Maybe we see how they deal with the changes during the same timeline? I'm gonna start a commentary run in my free time. Good thing this wasn't a longer game or I'd never get the two seperate projects I've got done.

LEVEL RED SPOILER:
How insanely appropriate was the ending song? I thought I'd die if Coulton tried too hard, but it was just right! And I loved the little song the turrets did! My heart seriously stopped when the elevator opened up to those turrets, especially after GLaDOS' final speech. Also? completely psyched that they down played the companion cube and pretty much didn't have any cake references (well except the one on that door).
Played for several hours straight. No idea how many chapters are in the game, but I may be nearing the end.

Just finished it and I don't have enough adjectives the describe its epic awesomeness. The text for the ending achievement sums it up perfectly: "Yes, that just happened."

Soooooo glad my brother had to work a couple days ago.

I for one love Portal 2. EXPECIALLY the ending song.

i've been singing along to it for hours.

Till i get the computer back with the game on it.

I am sooooo close to the end again.

I just want to beat it again!

and again!

and Again!

Though one of my friends is making me feel like being GLaDoS. Shes a seriously being a pain in ass.

My brother doesn't want people to know this, and he is a pain at times soooo...

I was actually guiding him thorough parts of the game!

he just couldn't figure it out.

(oh and my brother is older, 24 to my 20 years)

On another note, my fav section from the ending song "Want you Gone"

Goodbye my only friend

Oh, did you think I meant you?

That would be funny

if it weren't so sad

Well you have been replaced

I don't need anyone now

When I delete you maybe

I'll stop feeling so bad

Tee hee, now i got to get dad off the computer so i can play some more.

Edit:

You know what just enjoy the song

Want you gone

Lyrics

Well here we are again

It's always such a pleasure

Remember when you tried

to kill me twice?

Oh how we laughed and laughed

Except I wasn't laughing

Under the circumstances

I've been shockingly nice

You want your freedom?

Take it

That's what I'm counting on

I used to want you dead

but

Now I only want you gone

She was a lot like you

(Maybe not quite as heavy)

Now little Caroline is in here too

One day they woke me up

So I could live forever

It's such a shame the same

will never happen to you

You've got your

short sad

life left

That's what I'm counting on

I'll let you get right to it

Now I only want you gone

Goodbye my only friend

Oh, did you think I meant you?

That would be funny

if it weren't so sad

Well you have been replaced

I don't need anyone now

When I delete you maybe

I'll stop feeling so bad

Go make some new disaster

That's what I'm counting on

You're someone else's problem

Now I only want you gone

Now I only want you gone

Now I only want you...

gone

Though if you hadn't beaten the game yet, AVOID THE SONG!

It's spoilers through-out the lyrics!

Seriously, AVOID!

Decided to "get it" yesterday and just finished it.

It wasn't that much longer than Portal 1, since most of the puzzles were so easy. And this is coming from someone who has huge problems in most Adventures with puzzles...

You need to play Portal Prelude, those are some really hard levels.

I only had to look up a walkthrough because I didn't look up to see some tiny, far away arrows that pointed up, but other than that I was able to get through all puzzles on my own.

Getting the tweeests spoilered was not that bad as expected actually. I still liked the story a lot and it made me long for fucking Episode 3 (Valve you lazy bitches !!) so much. PLEASE Gabe, reveal it at this E³ and say it's actually going to turn out to be HL3 and 20+h long...

However, I'm still going to wait for it to drop below 30€ and then get my flatmate to buy it too, so we can play the co-op.

Portal 2:Lab Rat, the prequel comic to the game, is free to read on the game's site. Provides quite a bit of insight to not only what happened between games, but also the set up for the first game.

Is it safe to read the comic before playing Portal 2, or will the comic spoil the game?

It's made to introduce players to Portal 2, so it only refers to the first game and explains how things got the way they are up until the moment 2 starts, so no spoilers other than for the first game.
