Japan soccer team wins Women's World Cup

I don't even follow sports, yet I'm surprised no one's posted on this. My brother and nephews follow soccer so when I heard from them at a family gathering this Saturday that the final game in the Women's World Cup was between the U.S. and Japan, I asked them which team I should root for. My brother pointed out that the women on Japan's team "do not look like Morning Musume." On Sunday afternoon, I was late in remembering to watch the game (I was watching episodes of "Gantz" instead), so when I tuned in to ESPN around 4:08 PM (EST), 68 min. of playing time had passed, yet the score was still 0-0. The U.S. team scored a goal only seconds after I tuned in, so I immediately assumed I was lucky for them and I should root for them.

Well, as you may know, luck wasn't enough. The score was soon tied and the game went into overtime. The score became tied again and the whole thing had to be settled with penalty kicks. And Japan got three kicks in to America's one. So they won. I don't begrudge them at all. Japan needed a morale booster and they got one. I'm happy for them. It was quite an exciting game, too. I've never found soccer interesting, but I have to admit these two teams played very well and kept it compelling the whole time I watched.

Well, we don't have threads about other sports either.

Yeah, but it's not often a Japanese women's team in any sport gets any kind of worldwide play. And it's a sport that our girls have participated in (well, at least a modified version of it--futsal), so I thought there might be some interest.

Never mind.

I had a spam postathon about it. USA v Brazil was good too. But our female team was ranked 1 before this tourney, so that should give you an idea of how unskilled female teams in general are. The group play was painful.

You're in luck, 2015 will expand the number of teams from 16 to 24 <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
