Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku

Post by EmEl »

We've talked about them a bit in the MomoClo thread, but EbiChu's new song has made me want to talk about them more.

EbiChu is essentially MomoClo's little sister group. They are their Berryz Koubou, complete with great songs and bad singers.

After going from 5 to 6 to 5 to 12, they are currently at ten members.

Maeyamada Kenichi is essentially in charge of their music and this is a wonderful thing. After their first single was a couple of covers (one of Sakurakko Club and one of ZONE), Maeyamada came along. (I should just make a thread about him, since he's all I care about really)

His first single was Ebizori Diamond. Then he was relegated to the b-side for their third single "Chime". Then they started releasing real singles with "The Tissue" and now "Oh My Ghost". Maeyamada is pretty much doing everything for the group these days. He has also been lending his sense of humor to the group with these songs, and the group's image has been noticeable in all aspects from the youtube blurbs on their PVs to the covers:

"The Tissue" was their first high-quality PV, but it was disappointing. It used that horrendously terrible close-up angle that Smileage always uses and Mano used in "Seishun Serenade". Never have girls been uglier. But "Oh My Ghost"'s PV is amazing despite Ms. Senpai needing acting lessons. There's actually one or two that can sing now (the vocal processing helps)

I care more about their music than their members, but if you like girls here are their introduction videos: one, two.

Most of the girls are pretty tolerable. There is that one "cute" girl that all the Japanese and Foreign wota like. But her "cute" voice and "cute" face are nothing of the sort and almost ruin most of their songs. The stupid thing is that in the b-side to "Oh My Ghost" she actually pulls off a quite competent matsuri-ish naga-uta vibrato.

Anyway, yeah, "Oh My Ghost" comes out this week. At least watch the PV.

Yeah, yeah. Em-El's ramblings are too difficult to read. Here it is not-paragraph form:

 1. 2010.02.14 - Asa no Chime ga Narimashita!
 2. 2010.08.07 - Ebizori Diamond!!
 3. 2011.01.10 - Chime!
 4. 2011.04.20 - The Tissue ~Tomaranai Seishun~
 5. 2011.07.27 - Oh My Ghost?

Oh My Ghost is amazing. I love the quirky PVs and glad Ebisu is keeping up with MomoClo with that anyway.

I hadn't seen the studio version of that song, only a concert video, but I really love it, it's so cleverly composed and it's really funny. The video is simple but good as well, especially the makeup in the second half, good fun! I actually really liked the Tissue song, although you're definitely right that the video made them look ugly (although there are quite a few girls that could be charitably described as homely in Shiritsu, anyway).

All in all I'm not really a huge fan of them yet (a few too many members, not quite enough talent, and a bit on the young side), but the songs Hyadain wrote for them so far have been excellent.

No idea who these girls are (I've fleetingly heard of MomoClo anyway), but I absolutely love Tissue and Oh My Ghost! They've got a very quirky cuteness that I haven't seen in idols in a long time.

Yeah, it's the same quirkiness I fell in love with for MomoClo. But I think I'm safe since EbiChu are still young enough and inexperienced enough that they don't hone it as well in their personalities (so far). It took me a whole year of actually seeing them open for MomoClo every now and then for me to actually admit that I liked the too young nobodies. For now I can safely admire their composer from afar without falling into the whirlpool of wotadom.

I've heard one or two songs! I know that much; I just honestly couldn't bring myself to care too much about them. I really just don't dig the cutesy act idols do these days for some reason. I just continue to see the idols themselves as adults or mature young ladies unnaturally acting cutesy and doing cutesy things which is gross to me. D: But that's for another day and thread.

I think it may be the fact that they are (or seem to be?) the less important subgroup to MomoClo, so the song writer and those managing the group feel they can do more fun things with their songs and image? Though I remember MomoClo being ridiculous in a good way too, so it might just be a thing with Stardust's idols. It's funny that whenever I watch new idols and like a song or image from them, I also think it's a good thing I don't know personalities or individual girls and can just appreciate them as a group. Not sure if that's what you were saying, but just adding my two cents to the thought of their not having established idol personalities yet. For some reason, I feel like it lets me appreciate the bigger picture and not nitpick on such-and-such girl disappearing into the background and other such big singing group complaints I easily fall into sometimes.

Except for one girl, MomoClo isn't cutesy at all, I don't think. At least that's why I like them--that inherent ridiculousness that we can find in these Stardust idols (Aso Natsuko~). They certainly don't hold back MomoClo in terms of fun because of their size now. If anything, they got weirder with their last PV.

What I meant about the personalities is the the way they act outside of the songs/PVs. MomoClo has certainly had more of a chance to show it off, but during MCs and meeting them and their TV appearances, they are just silly girls even outside of being given PVs where they fight ninjas or throw a cake in someone's face. Whereas the younger EbiChu girls sometimes still feel like they are in their little shells when outside of their goofy PVs.

But yeah, they're slowly growing up into real idols and have certainly grown in ability since I first saw them over a year ago.

Phone post full of mistakes because phone is phone will elaborate later:

Covers are awesome. Reminds me of rock bands, not idols. The New PV is hilarious. I like the goofiness in itr all. But the girls aren't that talented yet. Maybe when they grow up more i'll care as much as momoclo.

But notw it is only Hyadain keeping my interest. Man is my new Tsunku. Fresh, creative, fun, works welll woth turning idol coal into diamond.

Also Aso.Natsuko is awesome too, and she's older so that is great. Check her out too :)

Graveyard response, appropriately enough!

Just grabbed the older singles and they're great too! Doshaburi Regret is especially great! It is actually somewhat pretty and more serious I guess? Gives at least some hope that they've got some talent.

And yeah I really like the stuff Maeyamada did for Aso Natsuko, it's a little bit less insane, but it shows his compositional skill a bit more, arguably. Either way it's good stuff <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/meh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';/' /> Oh and Puppy Love by YuiKaori is also really cute and it has that call/response thing that Maeyamada just can't seem to get enough of (it's almost note for note the same as the one from Z Densetsu ). Fast-talking girls, must be a dream come true for Hyadain to write for
