Free Kpop Concert in New York

Post by Shoujo Q »

Just found this on allkpop

allkpop has just received info that KBS is trying to lineup at least 10 total artists.

Some of the top Hallyu stars will be coming to New York in October!

The free concert from KBS, open to all ages, will be held on October 9th 2011 at Randall’s Island Park in New York and will feature many top artists, the tentative list includes TVXQ, Wonder Girls,2PM, B2ST, SHINee, Se7en, Sistar19, Lee Hyori, and 4Minute! (*Note: the lineup may change)

The concert will begin at around 7:00PM and is estimated to bring in about 10,000 fans.

The concert will promote the globalization of Korean culture through live music and performances in the US, but will also be featured in South Korea through a broadcast by KBS.

I'll try and keep tabs on it, or someone who lives in New York can? I'd LOVE to go to this if other people in the area are going.

We should definitely set a meet-up or something for that day to everyone who wants to go.

I'm 75% certain I'll go, but my only problem is getting home after the concert. The last bus home to Boston is scary as hell and there's no guarantee you'll get on it! (Especially since I have no idea when the concert ends.)

Anyone in New York want to rent me a place to sleep for the night that's cheaper then a hotel? Image

I'd love to go, but how do we get to Randall's Island by public transportation? (I don't drive.) And how do we get off after the concert?

I don't live in New York so I would have no clue as how to answer any of the questions you ask. But I did google it and I got this page. (Scroll down to Public Transportation.) If any of that makes an sense then that might be your answer?

Yeah, the get-off-at-125 St.-and-transfer-to-the-x80 bus direction sounds like it'll work for me.

But that page also says "There are no events currently scheduled at this venue." That's odd. Who's saying this K-pop event is scheduled there? (It IS an odd place for a concert like that.)

Allkpop KBS is a National Korean television station that is sponsoring the concert, and it's free so it doesn't seem like a very odd place to have a concert.

I just randomly googled Randall Island Park, though going to the actual page doesn't show anything past September and this is October. So there is still time for it to show up. Though I do hope it shows up soon because I need to plan. Image

I remember going to this in 2003 when they still had artists I loved and I met BoA and Jang Nara as well as BoBo from the BBS without knowing it, haha. I would like to go to something like this just to meet up with people and have a good time, but its much too far for just that, unfortunately with the way my financial situation is. Someone here should post some pictures and reports from this after it happens.

Paying for the express bus is absurd. Take the M35 right outside the 4/5/6 station at 125th instead.

Or bike. Traffic and the buses are going to be absurdly crowded getting off the island.

Concert is having some issues:

"We’ve just received a bit of unfortunate news for fans, as the Free NYC K-Pop Concert which was supposed to happen in October, may be on the verge of cancellation.

A concert organizer revealed to allkpop today that they had difficulties securing Randall’s Island Park, due to capacity issues.

Concert organizers are currently looking into alternative venues, and will provide allkpop with an update as soon as details are settled.

Keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned for more info."

Well, I did say back in post #12 that it was an odd place for such a concert. Looks like somebody agreed. You can have a jazz concert at Randall's Island because hardly anybody goes to those, but something of this magnitude with the huge number of Koreans in NYC? I don't think so.

So tickets need to be picked up in person at one of various locations in NY and NJ, starting on Sunday.

I personally need 4 tickets, so I just need to find one person to go with me. Most people I know who would go with me are out of state or have something planned for that day already, though. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Sadude I'll come with you if you want. It would have to do other day of this week though because right now I'm moving and all my energies/time are focused on that, but if you want to go at the end of this week I'll come with you. Granted, all these assuming there's still tickets then (after the sell out of the SME concert I would expect nothing short of crazy packedness on this one)...

I know this is not a lot of help, but it's the most I can offer ^^U

Lemme know :)

EDIT:

Yeah, my friend got on line around 1pm (1 hr before the handout started), and they just ran out of tickets in the koryo books location. Fuck.

Will try and get tickets in one of the NJ locations sometime this week. I really want to go to this concert :(

Yup, I was on line at Koryo as well. Didn't get tickets, as expected.

Image + Image

These don't even begin to show how long the line was. It went down the entire (NYC avenue-length) block to 5th Avenue, back where it came from to 6th Ave, and around the corner. There were easily 1,000 people there.

All the locations are sold out. There's going to be one more set distributed in NYC on Tuesday morning, but considering how many people everywhere didn't get tickets, I expect that to be the worst with a huge line well before dawn. Considering that, and considering that I'm not that attached to any of the artists performing, I'm giving up on this one. I still have SMTown on the 23rd. :D
