Former Morning Musume member Kago Ai (23) apparently attempted suicide this morning, it has been learned. She was found in her Roppongi apartment with a slit wrist and was taken to a nearby hospital, but fortunately, it is said that she is in a non-life-threatening condition.

Azabu police received an emergency call at around 11:55am on September 11. Kago was found in her apartment with a slit wrist, and it is said that she was in a stupor at the time. It is suspected that she may have consumed a large amount of drugs.

According to police, Kago had spoken over the phone with someone from her agency just before the incident. Her words suggested that she was contemplating suicide, so the person from the agency rushed to her apartment, where Kago was discovered on the floor.

The apparent suicide attempt comes just a few days after it was reported that her boyfriend, Ando Haruhiko (44), was arrested for attempted extortion on September 6. It is believed that Ando may be associated with the yakuza.

News outlets also reported that Kago was living with Ando, and she was present at the time he was arrested. Kago later underwent voluntary questioning by police regarding Ando’s case.

I just really don't know what to say about Kago at this point, other than she obviously needs some serious help. Except she's always needed help and it doesn't ever seem like she got much of it. This IS her second attempt.

Such horrible news to hear. I'm only glad she didn't succeed in her attempt. (Especially today of all days.)

I hope someone steps up to help her and her fans give her as much support as possible.

Her first attempt is one she talked about with her comeback. I think it occurred sometime after she as let go from UFA.

Is 薬物 mostly used in the context of illicit drugs or does it also count for OTC medicine?

Poor Kago. Everyone has been using her for money since she was 12 and now, she doesn't have any guidance. I guess child stars in Japan meet the same fate as child stars in the US - screwed up and depressed.

From what I was able to find, it seems to be used mostly in the illicit context. Illegal drugs or misuse of prescription drugs. I'm not sure if Japan has the same problem with abuse of prescription drugs as the US, as things like anti-depressants, pain killers, and stimulants are not given out as often. That's pure conjecture on my part though.

I have to echo Eri's sentiment, I feel really bad for Kago. She reminds me a lot of kids I knew who had really strict parents growing up and then just went totally crazy when they got their first taste of freedom. She went through the whole rebellious stage with the underage smoking and older boyfriends, the nude-ish photos and the tell-all books. Now it seems like she's hit the point where she's realized none of that is really satisfying and she's really lost. I hope she gets some help and guidance. I know she's a celebrity and there's a lot about her we don't know, but she seems like a sweet and fun girl at heart.

Man, I was so happy when I saw her trying to make a comeback. Even being part in a movie !

Too bad it apparently wasn't very successful. Maybe that could have changed her and her view on life.

There's really not much else I can say, except for I hope she'll get better and recover.

Also...I don't read Kago as teenage-rebellion-gone-wrong. I think she's the product of the system.

She kind of has a screwed up family right? She's been financially supporting her mother, step-father, and siblings ever since she joined Morning Musume. She entered an adult, professional world at an age when she just graduated elementary school and dealt with perverts etc since then. She had a stressful teenage transition period where she tried to maintain her childish appearance and behavior, even while (ironically) she was being intensely sexualized by wota. Like all celebrities, she is probably surrounded by enablers and leechers who don't care about her at all and will drop her as soon as her behavior gets her in trouble.

Saying she "should know better" doesn't mean anything in this context. She's been validated all throughout her formative years for being exactly as she is. When she's making $$$ for her company, her family, herself for acting like a strung out 5 year old...is anyone going to sit her down and say "now Kago, you should really mature in a mentally healthy way"? Not to mention, psychological problems (including depression) are still ta-fucking-boo in Japan.

I am always disturbed by the schadenfreude that starlets get when they crash - B. Spears, L. Lohan, Amy Winehouse as well. People love to feel satisfied when pretty, talented, famous girls get destroyed by their own demons. I don't understand. I feel enormous pity for Kago and only wish her the best.

1. She's had a history of doing stuff like this and neither she, the people around her or even fans have done a damn thing about it.

2. Multiple FAILED suicide attempts means she either doesn't want to die (either consciously or on the subconscious level) which amounts to a cry for help no one seems to want to listen to, or she's just really bad at killing herself.

3. Oh, guess who is all over the news now? Maybe she's not making a conscious effort to do all this but she's once again in the spotlight, getting sympathy from tons of sources/people and having all her fucked up actions validated all over again.

I dealt with some pretty horrible shit related to suicide with both a close friend and a relative of mine when I was younger and it has perhaps "skewed" my view on the topic, but I don't care how much of as asshole I sound like, people who do it get zero sympathy from me.

Maybe this will be the one that gets her some help, but considering how little stock Japan puts in mental health, the only way she'll get what she needs is being shipped off to another country. Otherwise the cycle will just continue and more people will stop by to watch the trainwreck.

When you look at it in a cynical and matter-of-fact way, she IS a stupid bitch girl for not knowing how to better manage her life and an attention whore for trying to draw attention to her problems with a suicide. Just like most suicides are. And none or very little of it is her fault. All you said in your rant still does apply eri - even if Al doesn't feel sympathy for her, which I personally don't get, but that's his choice.

I've never been a fan of Kago but whether it was a genuine attempt or a cry for help (the phone call seems to point to the latter) it's very sad.

My nephew tried to kill himself a couple of years back and it was only by sheer luck he was found. We knew he had problems but he wasn't the sort who talks about things so we had no idea things were so bad. There were family members ready to support him but he cut himself off from everybody. Maybe Kago didn't know how to ask for help or maybe there was nobody she could turn to, either way it shouldn't have happened.

I wish her well for the future and hope she can find some peace.

The fact that she needs help and no one cares to give it to her doesn't warrant your sympathy? Really? It doesn't seem unfortunate to you at all that she's been used, misguided and is now a very lost person in dire need of help to the point that she'd try to take her own life?

This poor woman needs some stable support figures and situations in her life and it's clear she doesn't know where or how to find them. I feel so sorry for her that she's in such deep pain, there is little worse than the feeling of wanting to take your own life. I hope, at least, after this ordeal, that she can maybe step back from the limelight for awhile and get the help and support she needs.

I just logged in for the first time in a while and this is the first thing I see. :( So sad. I mostly echo the sentiments of everyone else, she's had a pretty screwed up life and someone should be trying to help her. I was just reading her twitter a few days ago and she seemed so happy, but that can always be a facade. This hits really close to home for me for a number of reasons I'd rather not get into, but I really hope this will be a wakeup call to those who love her and she's able to get the help she needs. <3

Phew. OK.

Truthbetold, it is very often, especially in young and/or histrionic people, a cry for help.

Otherwise, when truly intended, it's a selfish act by its own nature because you don't give thought to the people who will be affected by your loss. Though, in Kago's case, it doesn't sound as if she has anyone in her life to truly care about her or give her emotional support so, like in most people who feel this way, she didn't give them much consideration if her attempt was genuine.

Whether or not it was genuine or a cry for help, though, it's still quite sad and deserves some much needed help as no one should have to feel that way, or even feel the need to worry people so much to feel cared about. Something clearly is not right and she is not a happy or well person. I feel sorry for her.

This makes me soooooo sad and depressed.

Back a few years ago, I was feeling pretty terrible from all the pressure from my own parent's divorce. Story short, my dad took all our savings. My mom's joints were being worked out from being a waitress for so many years and it hurt to see her not feeling well, but go to work anyways. It made me feel I had to do SUPER well in school so this would all be worth it to her. But, I just couldn't get the A+++ she wanted so I was pretty sad. I totally can't understand the pressure Kago feels since I only got an inkling of something similar she might have felt, but it's so sad. I feel sorry for Kago and really hope she feels better soon. I think she still has siblings she may have to support (?) and they looked pretty young from a picture a couple years back so it may be a long road ahead of her still.

She's got three younger brothers and a younger sister. She posted a picture of one of her brothers not too long ago, and I think it was mentioned he's about 11/12. I don't really know if she's the one financially supporting them, though.

Wasn't her father arrested almost right after she joined Morning Musume? It sounds like her entire family has/had some issues. It probably didn't help growing up that her parents were pretty young. It might have been one of the reasons for what seems to be a lack of guidance growing up.

I understand where she's coming from/how she feels and I'm sad she can't get any help. But she will battle depression all her life. It's not something she can just fix magically and if she never meets anyone that can be a positive support for her then this will become a cycle. And she may succeed next time. It's not something she should take lightly, but I'm sure it will be twisted like the H!O fans are doing "how dare you" and whatnot. She goes to trouble because it's all that she knows and people have an insane time getting out of their comfort zone even if it's destructive. Hopefully someone near her will do something positive for her or at the very least gain a mentor that will help her gain some sort of self worth.
