LET'S TALK ABOUT PENGUINDRUM

Post by Melon »

Ikuhara heard my prayers for a great animated show like I worshiped in the days of old and blessed me. I know this because of the penguin focus. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... R#>/8o.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8o' />

Anyway, I can't wrap my head around what's going on (my brain is full of fuck.jpg) and I'm not into speculating because I find it boring. So here's what's so great about this show:

1. Animation quality. Outside of that one episode that shall not be named, the animation quality has been great. Despite the budget, he made several stylistic choices that not only cheapen the production but give it an unique perspective. I love the NPCs as sign silhouettes. The library is a work of art. There are several story sequences I sat back and marveled at the spectacle of it all.

2. Music. While there are no great chanting ala Utena there are several sequences where the music carries the mood and emotion. The first episode and episode 12 in particular showcase this the best.

3. Narration. He's a troll, plain and simple.

4. Penguin comedy sequences, Ringo comedy sequences. A lot of the most poignant sequences are punctuated by comedy. It's common in drama, I know, but the gags are actually funny so it works better.

I am also a huge fan of Ikuhara and got his autograph at an anime con many years ago. I'm not all caught up to the show because I got all giddy at the thought I could see it "live." Well, the damn thing plays after 2am on a weekday and I wake up at 6:30 so, screw that. I believe I am up to episode 11 though.

In the first episode, you see these anonymous kids having a random "meaningless" conversation about how one boy holds a gateway to an alternate universe. The gateway is an apple. One of the main characters, who is obsessed with the concept of fate (very Ikuhara), writes in a diary of things that she must fulfill (which is kind of a pun on Death Note) suddenly is singled out as the key to it all. HER NAME IS APPLE. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

What happened to their parents? How is the sarin gas attack their fault? Did you catch the Murakami Haruki references?

FABULOUS MAX

I also dig all the penguin jokes. In Tokyo, the frequent-use subway card is called the Suica card and has a penguin mascot. The emphasis on train stations as "links" along an intricate maze of possible paths towards a goal -- but in a mechanical and cold way -- is also a very Ikuhara move.

I am so behind on this series, now that Doctor Who is over, I may jump back in since apparently I only have time to watch one show at the time since I barely watch any television anymore. Image

I think I left off on episode 3 or 4, I can't remember. And it wasn't like I didn't like the series, I just lost interest in keeping up.

That monologue that is a running theme throughout the series had a nice twist to it in episode 13.

There weren't as many "OMFG" moments in 13 animation wise. I was rather disappointed with that. But we got more plot this time so I guess it's a tradeoff. I look forward to reading the translator justify his trollsubs in gg's version in his blog. He is such a douchebag in his posts and he goes and pulls trollsubs these past two episodes. Damn I hate the fansub community I wish a professional company would've picked this series up to simulcast. :| I did understand what he was saying though, despite the subs thank god for returning to Japanese study :|

That globe in the doctor's office catches my eye each time it's shown. It's really beautiful, design wise, and fits rather well thematically. I want one for my room watch it be the penguindrum~
