Best and Worst Singers in H!P's History?

I'm curious to find out people's opinions on this, so I figured I'd make a thread. At first glance, one would assume that this is a pretty clear cut issue - you either can sing or you can't, and everyone should agree on who can and can not, right? After all, since being an idol is about much more than musical talent, you can like someone and still admit that they're a tone deaf whore. But I've heard everything from "Koharu was one of the best singers in MM history and I miss her voice." to "Miki was terrible, tone deaf, and sounded like a goat.", while I think Miki was one of H!P's best and that anime sucked out any modicum of potential Koharu may have had.



So, my friends, what do you think? And please, feel free to bitch about how XYZ-chan needs more lines because she's a fantastic singer who gets shafted. :D

- Tsugunaga Momoko, particularly her "cute voice"

- Kusumi Koharu



I was trying to make an even list but it's actually pretty hard. I'll see what other people say and see if there's someone I missed.

Even though I don't particularly enjoy Momoko's voice, I would consider her one of the best singers in the H!P kids for pure consistency, pitch, etc alone. Her lower range is pretty okay to me. Everything from like, Fighting Pose to Monkey Dance makes me want to punch her in the face, though.

Well, when I think about singers I take two thing into count: singing abilty (which means pitch, range etc..) & voice (which means how much I like her voice), so I'll devide it into two:

Berryz + C-ute still don't really have any singers that come close to some of MM's best though. None of their voices are particularly bad, (although Maimai sounds like a frog at times) they just don't really leave an impact on me.

Part of the reason you get some of those differences is 1.) people misusing "technical" music terms and 2.) differences in type of voices people enjoy listening to. For instance, Miki is a certainly a good singer, but the style of her singing often annoyed me, especially within MM. Koharu is certainly a terrible singer, but I enjoyed listening to her in Koi Kana and Balalaika because her style fit those particular songs.



The other part is blatant inability to acknowledge that someone you're a fan of may have some faults. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />



The OTHER other part is song type. Some girls sound fantastic singing a particular type of song, but awful singing another. There are very few people who sound awesome singing almost anything. Those are the people I will list below.

^ Kaori and Mari both sounded really good in the early days (in Tanpopo mainly..) but I agree that they are not as good now. Kaori during the DMM concert was sounding a little strained. My ears are so biased though because I heart her. ;__;



They need to pull a Miki with Erina, her as a soloist just does not work, and why do all her CD covers look the same!

Kaori's deterioration has got nothing on Mari's, though. She ruins any song she's in.

I don't know anything about technical singing terms, but I always considered there to be two types of good singers: those who can hit their notes with power, and those who can hit them with less power; and similarly among the worst, those who miss all their notes but at least belt a little, and those whose voices are weak and crackly and STILL can't hit a damn note.



I think Matsuura is on a whole other level than the rest of H!P. She's the best in my opinion, easily.



After her...

Maki, post-MM (even though she was quite good in MM by MM standards)

Those are the girls I think sang really well with power. There are a whole bunch more who I think were quite good singers, but just not quite as good for some reason. For example, Nacchi is probably among the top, but I always thought she sounded a little strained even in her prime. Reina from like '03-'05 was one of the best ever, but she fell off a cliff. Eri sang beautifully but more weakly than some of the others. LinLin was on and off, but boy was she on when she was on. Et cetera...



As for the worst...



Aika, Koharu, and JunJun are probably my worst ever. They neither hit notes nor sang with any power.



Konno, Rika, and Sayu all pretty much suck, though the former 2 managed SOMEHOW to hit notes after a bit of practice (though not with sounds that particularly resembled singing), and Sayu at least sings hard, however badly.



I feel like I have less right to judge the former kids, since I always hated their squeaky little voices, but have grown to love many of them recently now that they're older... though I have to say, I think my least favorite voice is Yurina's. I guess she seems to be a decent singer but her voice is sooooo grating to me and I don't understand why she's always been a lead.

Kanon/Erina (love then both, but they can't sing worth a shit. I seriously hope they improve so that you don't become more dead weight to Momusu.)

Saki N/Mai H (need to shut up forever. They sound like frogs on helium.)

Yurina/Maasa/Saki/Maimi (You all have essentially the same weird, halfway consistent man-voice. You can sing on key most of the time but your singing is completely flat and void of emotion. It's painful to hear, ngl.)

Takahashi is my personal favourite, although I wish she hadn't been shoved down my throat like she's the only thing H!P has had going for it these last few years. I don't know much about the groups outside of MM... I love Sonim, does she count?

There are vast swaths of H!P that I never paid attention to and never will, but only Matsuura and Maeda Yuki ever struck me as being clearly superior. I would characterize first gen, Fujimoto, Takahashi, etc. as being various levels of "pretty good" (especially for idols) but not really on the level of those first two.
