How dare you endorse shoving the rich, varied media types of a country into a single category?

Also, it's two words jammed together. It gets a hyphen. What am I, an animal?

It gets a hyphen, but I pretty much hate the genre classification. I don't listen to j-pop, j-ska, or j-punk. I listen to pop, ska, and punk. Some of it happens to come from Japan. A country is not a genre. It exists as nothing more than Japan's way of easily separating their shelves at the music store (where it's usually written J-POP).

As for justification, I don't think I've ever even seen "JPop" beyond some lazy Westerners who can't find the hyphen key.

I have J-pop, J Pop, Japanese Pop, and Jpop being used on my playlist.

J-pop wins followed by Japanese Pop. So I picked J-pop as the clear winner.

I don't care. Where is my third choice for the apathetic people on the boarrrrdddddd!

I can tell what it means whether it's j-pop or jpop. And I am one of those aforementioned lazy peeps, so if I do write it it'll be jpop. In all honesty, when I talk about it, I usually say "japanese music" "korean music" "hindi music" "spanish music" ect ect ect, not letter-pop.

EDIT - Sugoiest replaces Bishie/s as my most hated Japanese-English combination abomination.

I had to google "bishie" since neither of my two dictionaries knew that word... and now I know why.

I usually use both versions when talking; "japanese music/pop" and "Jpop". Jpop and Kpop, for me, however refer to a special kind of music. The girly kind that I, for some reason, dig.

I say J-pop, not Jpop or JPop or J-Pop. It just looks so weird any other way. But I rarely say it unless someone doesn't know what I'm going on about.

This pretty much. I listen to Brazilian and Greek music as well, but I don't say B-pop or G-pop.

I agree.

Wether J-Pop or Jpop is superior is disputable, but JPop is full-retarded-mode.

Hyphen. It's always hyphen! What is this, MySpac--pardon--MaiSpeesu? Also, yes to only-J-capitalized.

Guys, we as a fandom can't afford to be so divided on this or any issue. Is there any way we can compromise? Maybe move the hyphen to the end? Or replace it with an umlaut over the "o"?

Nah, I was genuinely curious. The mp3 tagging program and the music player that I use both have "JPop" listed in the drop-down genre menu as defaults, sans hyphen (though they do accept write-ins). But the iTunes store as well as most things that I download elsewhere go with "J-Pop". It's maddening to have to change it all the time! </first-world problems>

I wasn't expecting the outcry against lumping everything from Japan into one genre, though. What kind of uncultured ruffian would do such a thing? I definitely don't-- Aside from "JPop", I also have a "Hello! Project" genre.

Oh I have a Hello!Project and my own fancy Club48 to group together the idols. (I also have J-Rock and Ska) Korean music on the other hand. It all came with K-pop, but I just threw it all under Korean since I had some trot and I know that's not pop and it was easier for me to find. ;D

I can understand the people that don't like to use the J's and just leave it as pop, but for me it helps me to keep it away from my English music. If I want to play my music at work, it best not be in anything but English. So if I get the chance it's easier to construct a playlist when you're just going to pop and rock and know your Japanese music isn't in there.

Does that make sense? Oh and yes my work mates are a bunch of racists who don't understand me and my love of music I can't understand and enjoy ridicule me any time I accidentally play it.

The only thing I have a problem playing is the idol stuff because it's so... it requires an explanation and they are not the type to understand. But the korean stuff or non-idol japanese stuff is cool. Shoot, I play my cheesy bollywood without shame. It's usually though my headphones though, so it's not like I'm blaring it through the speakers. I'll play spanish music without headphones when I'm working with the spanish girls because they like the songs too. The last time I played american music I was shuffling through my LMFAO videos and their sexy and I know it video got me accused of looking at porn! I wish guys in porn were that sexy. UNF

Except Buono. I'll even play their PVs./lives with no care.

Jpop or J-Pop. They are both shortcuts to other words, so there doesn't need to be one correct one.
