2011 MM-BBS MUSIC AWARDS

Post by Melon »

I don't have Photoshop anymore ;_; so no shiny banners sorry.

2011 MM-BBS MUSIC AWARDS

RULES:

Up to FIVE places per catagory.

I would prefer 2011 releases, but sometimes we discover artists that released earlier, so they're okay too.

This is Music Chat. No limits on geographic location. So if you want to pimp your Zimbabwe pop starlet, go for it! Since it's Music Chat, H!P is okay too.

If you want to divide categories into languages, it's cool.

CATEGORIES:

 • Album of the Year

 • Single of the Year

 • Best New Artist
 • Guilty Pleasure of the Year
 • A-side of the Year
 • B-side of the Year
 • Flop of the Year
 • Overplayed Song of Shut the Fuck Up
 • Disappointment of the Year
 • Concert Performance of the Year
 • Music/Promotional Video of the Year
If there are any I should add, tell me in reply!

Can we also post stuff that has not been released this year (especially albums) that we loved ?

Or at least give "honorable mention"s ?

EDIT:

Also, the year actually isn't over yet.

2.EDIT:

I am stupid, how did I overread the first part about earlier stuff !?

Re: 2011 MM-BBS MUSIC AWARDS

Post by Ap2000 »

And here are the nominees for the category of Ap2000's most beloved music of the year:

* Album of the Year

Tron Legacy OST by Daft Punk - I count this as 2011, since it was released in December 2010 and didn't reach Europe until January 2011 (at least the movie). Basically, this probably is the single best soundtrack to a movie ever made. Eventhough there are some boring/uninteresting tracks, the good ones are absolutely phenomenal and equal to the biggest masterpieces of electronic music. Simply put, Daft Punk at their best.

Bastion OST was also really, really well done.

Honorable mention: Deus Ex: Human Revolution OST. Sorry, man, you’re insanely great during the game, but except for 2~3 songs, boring to listen to on the go.

* Single of the Year

Ugh… this is a question where I have to consult my MP3-player and media player but it’s really hard to say.

SNSD and their Mr. Taxi is absolutely amazing however. I’ve listened to that song and watched the music video well over 200 times and still absolutely love it.

Derezzed by Daft Punk is a perfect song. Especially the NTEIBINT remix is spectacular.

* Best New Artist

2NE1 GOES INTO ALL THE FIELDS.

Not even going to count the Pon-Pon girl here since her, althought amazingly-awesome Nakata dude, producer made everything.

* Guilty Pleasure of the Year

Syndrome by ChoColat – Biggest jailbait of the century, that makes me feel old though I’m not. Also, curse YOU PLUM the person that made me somehow listen to it twice and thus remember this thing !!

Roly Poly by T-ara - I didn’t really like/listen to this song until I heard it twice in a club at the same night. But since then, it has grown on me a lot. Also has an insanely awesome bass, making it perfect to listen to while playing Battlefield 3.

I don’t care/know shit about A, B or other letters from the alphabet, so I’m not writing anything about these.

* Flop of the Year

SNSD and their Hoboys – Just how deep can you fall ? Taeyeon is still a perfect, beautiful princess though.

* Overplayed Song of Shut the Fuck Up

Some black eyed peas or whatever bullshit probably.

Anything by that generic gaga whatever ho.

* Disappointment of the Year

SNSD reaching out to North America with utter crap.

* Concert Performance of the Year

Uh… 2NE1 in the USA ? I really don’t care about concerts…

* Music/Promotional Video of the Year

Screw you zae for mentioning one of the best indie summer songs !

EDIT:

These are not final, I have to wait for the year-end-charts of my (only) favourite radio station until I can pass final judgement on most beloved single and album.

Oh, too many categories for me! ACK

This year, I've been listening to a bunch of my old stuff, so I probably don't have too many picks.

Album of the year:

Fire & Ice
by Kaskade. Two CDs of really great dance-pop. The Fire disc is all collaborations with other artists and the Ice disc is Kaskade remixes of the Fire disc songs. Loved it.

JPN by Perfume. Definitely their most consistent and solid album yet. The album's only weakness is it's same-iness, but at least it's a lot of good stuff.

Checkmate! by Namie Amuro. Three of the four PV songs are great and there are some solid album tracks. UNUSUAL and Make It Happen are always in my head.

Single of the year:

Sit! Stay! Wait! Down!/Love Story by Namie Amuro. SSWD is actually the weakest song, but even it's catchy. Higher is definitely the shining star.

NAKED/Fight Together/Tempest by Namie Amuro. All three songs are completely different, but they're interesting in their own right and they each stand up.

Love Me Back by Koda Kumi. Sexy PV, catchy song, decent b-side. Pretty good.

POP DIVA by Koda Kumi. See above.

Best new artist:

Tomomi Itano. She's really got the potential to become not just a well-known idol, but a real pop star.

Guilty pleasure:

POP DIVA by Koda Kumi. JUMP JUMP JUMP HABATAKU, POP POP POP DIVA. Oh my god is this the best worst song in the world.

What is LOVE by Maki Goto. WHADIS DA LOU LOVE? I don't know what's going on here, but I like it.

We Found Love (not featuring Calvin Harris because he produced the damn thing fucking American girls not understanding that get it together collective young ladies). I hate how absolutely shallow this song is, but FUCK if it doesn't tickle all of my pleasure points. giggity.

E.T. (shutup the single was 2011 gall) bySlaggy Katy Perry. And only the version without Kanye West.

Levels by Avicii. Kind of a hokey dance track with a catchy, repetitive hook and under-used, but lovely vocal sample.

PON PON PON by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

A-side of the year:

Dear J by Tomomi Itano. So high energy.

POP DIVA by Koda Kumi.

Spice by Perfume. Hate the PV, love the song. Rockit, girls.

Levels by Avicii.

Save The World by Swedish House Mafia. Really great track and one of the better vocal performances SHM has been able to get.

PON PON PON by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

B-side of the year:

Higher by Namie Amuro. Such a perfect song with a great structure and catchy hook. TAKE ME HAAAAAAAIIIIIIII-YAAAAAAAAAH.

Flop of the year:

E.T. (feat. Kanye West) by Spawn Katy Perry. Sorry Yeezy, you ruined this one.

Concert performance of the year:

LIVE STYLE 2011 by Namie Amuro. Another solid performance from Namie, if not a little underwhelming. Very good set list, especially for an album with extremely old collaborations. Weird to see a soloist take on a bunch of duets, but this is what Past>Future 2010 should have been.

If we can count live TV performances:

Wonder Woman feat. AI & Tsuchiya Anna at MTV VIDEO MUSIC AID by Namie Amuro. Three great singers take the stage and kill it with a perfect song for three people.

Run The World (Girls) Live at Billboard Awards by Beyonce. An expert use of video, light, dance, singing, and sheer headcount. Also, Major Lazer.

MV/PV of the year:

Fantasy by DYE. Speaks for itself.

Save The World by Swedish House Mafia. Dogs rules, robbers drool!

Levels by Avicii. Kind of a used sentiment, but pretty good overall.

Daddy's Gone from American Dad (performed by Scott Grime and Seth McFarlane) (pardon the shite quality. FOX is taking these all down...). This entire episode had hilarious and catchy hip-hop/RnB songs, but this has to be the funniest.

PON PON PON by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. C'mon.

There. I spent way too long on this.

[FUTURE EDIT FROM THE FUTURE] Added PON PON PON and striked-through any 6th place nominees.

Album of the Year

Redlight King - Something For the Pain. The only album this year where I actually enjoyed every single song.

Single of the Year

U-Kiss - Tick Tack. One of the best Korea to Japan debuts. Made even better since it wasn't a remake.

Best New Artist

Since I love, love, love Redlight King's album, they're the only person I feel I can give this to.

Guilty Pleasure of the Year

RuPaul - Glamazon (it's an album). I can't help it. It was so catchy.

A-side of the Year

I'm drawing a total mind blank on most of the singles I've heard this year. I'll have to update this when I remember.

B-side of the Year

Momoiro Clover - Santa-san. I'll be listening to it in July.

Flop of the Year

Christina Aguilera. She didn't do much but anything she did either sucked (see Mick Jagger song) or did horribly on the charts. Her movie was bad too.

Overplayed Song of Shut the Fuck Up

That one about Mick Jagger by the Maroon 5 guy. Christ.

Disappointment of the Year

AKB48's album because they had the money to get some fantastic songs. Instead it was an album full of singles and filler.

Miss A's album. I forget what it was called but it was even worse than AKB's because it was all singles and old b-sides. I think it had two new songs.

Concert Performance of the Year

I didn't really see any concert performances this year that wowed me. Maybe next year.

Music/Promotional Video of the Year

T-ara - Roly Poly. 12 minutes of totally-worth-it.

Unrelated but:
Covers, meh.

Best New Artist

Sakura Gakuin, I love them! They made their single debut last year, and released an album in April. They released their second single this month.

And to a lesser extent their subgroup Babymetal. Idols doing Heavy Metal music. ;D
This is the first time I've seen someone else who knows about them. They're so adorable!

How about Album Track of the year? Also the distinction between Single and A-side can be blurry.
Also, they year actually isn't over yet.
Was there actually anything released in the last week of the year? Or rather, anything that would be worthy of going into a 2011 award list?

Anyway, here's my list:

• Album of the Year

2NE1 - 2nd Mini Album. No contest in this one. I already loved the "singles" that had been released already, and the two new songs were great and made the mini album solid.

Honorable mention goes to Shakira's latest album, Sale El Sol. It came out in October of 2010, but I only discovered it in 2011. She's one of a group of artists that I like, but never keep up with what they release, so when I finally do discover that they've made something it's a really nice surprise.

• Single and A-side of the Year

2NE1 - Lonely. You probably meant for this to be a single with multiple tracks were all we're really good, but Lonely was released as a digital single by itself so I'm awarding both of these to it.

Honorable mention goes to Orange Caramel - Bangkok City. Not the deepest song, just fun club/dance pop. Great sound and ridiculous/fun video.

• Best New Artist

For me, 2011 was about discovering existing artists that I either didn't know about or didn't care for, not really ones who debuted this year. My awards in this go to 2NE1, aozorafantasii, Becca, MAA, Super Junior, T-ara, and 5dolls.

• Guilty Pleasure of the Year

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - PONPONPON and

Chi Chi - Don't Play Around. Both are super cheesy but great songs.

Also, Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger. Mostly because Anderei mentioned it, and I actually like it. I took a dance class this past month, and they used this song as a warmup song. I hadn't actually heard it before that.

• B-side of the Year

This was a tough category since Kpop and US pop don't really have b-sides and I didn't listen to much JPop this year. For an actual B-side I'm going to go with

Kim Greem - Okay and

Orange Caramel - 第一次爱的人 (The Day You Went Away), and for

• Album Track of the Year

I'm going with 2NE1 - Ugly. Easily became one of my favorite songs by them as soon as it came out, and has remained as such.

Honorable mentions:

HALCALI - Giri Choco

Heartsdales feat. Namie Amuro - Wet 'N Wild

Rainbow - Mach

The Lonely Island - Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie & Clyde (feat. Rihanna), and

Wonder Girls - Stop. A lot of awards in this category, but they were all pretty well deserving.

• Flop/Disappointment of the Year

Lady Gaga - Born This Way (album). I had a lot of high expectations for this, or at least for the singles , but nothing from it has stepped up.

• Overplayed Song of Shut the Fuck Up

none

• Concert Performance of the Year

2NE1 - Live in Times Square for MTV Iggy. Not just because I went to it (Ok, mostly because I went to it), but also because it was their first foray into the US.

• Music/Promotional Video of the Year

T-ara - Cry Cry. Who doesn't love 15 minute mini drama MVs?

Honorable mentions:

Girl's Day - Hug Me Once - Neat concept, heh.

2NE1 - Go Away (Japanese ver.) - Colorful, stylish, and fun with a few hidden references for fans. I love the "party" choreography, too.

2NE1 - Lonely : Simple yet still manages to be a stylish MV for.a slow song.

Secret - Starlight Moonlight - Super cute, but I dislike that they show so much leg for such a "cute" MV and song. It's fine for most of the PV, but the "Sha La La La La" parts don't fit.

After School - Let's Step Up - Fantastic. More girl groups should do more specialized "performances" like After School has done.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - PONPONPON - So much WTF going on here, I love it.

Probably not.

But chances are you haven't listened to everything yet.

In my case I always discover several good songs in the year-end charts of my favourite radio station.

Of course this is an always-open thread, so anybody can post their most listened to songs of 2011 any time they want.

I'm shamelessly stealing Zae's Image icon and sloppily applying it to non-Image sites just to tick the OCDs among you off.

Sign me up to the Spent Too Much Time On This club too.

Album of the Year
 • Opeth - Heritage
Not their strongest album ever, but it's Opeth so they own everything released in any given year by default. Extra points for proving that Image flutes can be fucking metal too (skip to 4:50 if you're a pussy and can't handle the whole track ).
• Buono! - Partenza
A groundbreaking release in many ways. Firstly, for its great ratio of awesome songs, secondly for finally hooking me up with a non-MM H!P group, and thirdly for finally making me learn the names and recognize some of the H!P Kids.
• G.E.M. - My Secret
Came out in October 2010 but really deserves to be included. G.E.M is awesome and is making it big in Hong Kong and I'm really hoping they will launch her into overseas career as well. At the same time, she retains the accessibility and down-to-earthness of an indie artist which can only make you like her even more. If there was to be one gateway drug into Cantopop then it would have to be this album. Recommended tracks: Image Good to be Bad, Image Twinkle II.
Single of the Year
 • n/a
I wasn't keeping very up to date with new releases in the past year, but after checking the discographies of the artists that may have had released one, there just isn't a whole single deserving the title. Unless we consider the imaginary Buono! - Partenza c/w Frankincense one.
Best New Artist
 • n/a
Nothing either, also largely because I had no time to check out new names. If I were to put existing artists that were recommended to me or I have discovered in 2011, the title would go to G.E.M., Buono!, and Image Tizzy Bac.
Guilty Pleasure of the Year
 • Morning Musume - Image Maji desu ka suka
It's totally not my kind of a song, but it grew on me and I secretly enjoy it. It being the 9th Gen's debut may or may not have something to do with it.
A-side of the Year

B-side of the Year
 • Ai Takahashi - Image Jishin motte yume wo motte tobitatsu kara
Apart from the sappy title and lyrics, it's a great farewell song from Ai that she totally rocked out during the concerts. It should have been a single on it's own, rather than a special B-side to the very weak Kono chikyuu. I'm really glad I bought it and it helps me daydream of an indie-rock-girl solo career for Ai. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/nono.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':nono:' />
• Morning Musume - Image Kare to issho ni omise ga shitai!
Amazingly both B-sides to the turd of an A-side that Kono chikyuu is are really good. You can say Sayu can't sing and I won't protest too much, but when once in a while she gets a writer with a clue who can turn hear weaknesses into strengths it produces little gems like this or Image It's You. Also scores points for the PV, see below.
Flop of the Year

Overplayed Song of Shut the Fuck Up

Disappointment of the Year
 • Dir en Grey - Dum Spiro Spero
With their previous 3 albums, Dir en Grey were consistently showing that they have found a way to re-define themselves as a proper metal band. With Dum Spiro Spero, they've completely lost their way. After the Image quite epic and exciting intro track and a promising Image The Blossoming Beelzebub, it all falls apart and descends into a chaotic mix of just about every style of metal ever invented crammed into each song. Including grind, and I hate grind. Kyo does manage to pull it all off with his phenomenal voice range, but it's an utterly and sadly wasted effort when the material just doesn't stick together. I like to pretend that this album never happened and continue to loop Image Vinushka (from the previous Uroboros) on my player.

This thread helped me discover so many good songs.
Any of the ones I posted?
I hate to say this, but you and I have very similar tastes, so I already knew the songs AND I already liked them~

Anyway, here's part one of my choices:

Album of the Year version Japan:

01. BASE BALL BEAR - Shin Kokyuu. I listened to this album over 20 times after it came out. With each release this band improves and their music becomes more complex. I haven't enjoyed an evolution of sound this much since following Shiina Ringo from her debut.

02. Momoiro Clover Z - Battle and Romance. Essentially, these girls show idol groups what it means to release an album. Link goes to my favorite song that wasn't a single.

03. Buono - Partenza. It seems unfair linking a mini album, but it was a great release and Buono was overall the act I enjoyed most this year from Japan.

Single of the Year version JAPAN:

01. Nakajima Takui - Yurari Yurara. Though the title track is an epic ballad, the b-sides range from easygoing rock to cockpunching rock. This single encompasses several of his styles well, though not all of them, but it proves how versatile he is. (And his costume in the PV is not something he normally does fyi) He really should be more popular, it's so sad. Some of you may know him as the guy that's done a couple of H!P songs. Anyway, it's no secret he would be my number one because he's my favorite singer. He also released another single this year, but I enjoyed this one more.

02. Momoiro Clover - Mirai Bowl. This was the last single for my favorite girl in the group, and it encompasses both her charm and the charm of the remaining girls well. But as if that wasn't enough, it had Chai Maxx and Zenrokyu Shoujo as well. Really, not only a great send off to a unique idol, but a great single in and of itself.

03. Scandal - Love Survive. Their releases this year lacked the PUNCH I expected from the girls, but this song showed me not to write them off yet. The b-sides were great, especially Kimi ni Shittochu, but Hikare was not a bad song either. All in all, I ended up liking this single more than their album.

Concert Performance -

Buono - Re; Buono. I am going to say the next sentence with 1110% seriousness - I listen/watch this concert once a week. I have been doing so since it came out. I cannot explain why I love it so much, but I do. In any case, they play with the band the entire time, the tracklist is great, the costumes are great, it is in general one of the best concerts from H!P.

Momoiro Clover - (title from cdj) -
4.10. Nakano SunPlaza Taikai Momokuro Haru no Ichidaiji - Mabushisa no Naka ni Kimi ga Ita - LIVE DVD

This was Akari's graduation concert, but it included 2 full length concerts with different themes that in general KICKED ASS.

2ne1 - Let's just put them down for every live performance because it's not like they flub it up.

I'll give this a whirl cause I'm bored. Granted I haven't kept up on EVERY single and album from some of even my favorite artists and there are still a small handful of artists I'd still like to explore, but from those I did keep up with, here goes. This is hard...I can't follow rules of only have 5 per section. I tried.

Album of the Year

YuiKaori - Puppy. I liked all their stuff since their debut, so this was almost a no-brainer, but this took me completely by surprise and I love every second of this album. I've played it so many times on repeat I can't even guess.

AKB48 - Koko ni Ita Koto. This album has all the great singles and B-sides they had accumulated up to that point since their last album plus some amazing album tracks with the perfect amount of variety.

Decapitated - Carnival Is Forever. The band took the hardship of losing their drummer after their last album in stride and came back with something so much more ferocious, but still in the same vein. Technical Polish death metal at its finest. Its hard to come across metal albums now that I can even listen to from front to back, so those are all getting mentions here.

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony. One of my favorite albums from this year, by a group of 5 guys from Italy who feel like friends to me, as I've met them several times and talk to them on Facebook pretty often. They're changing the standards of what us metal fans know as extreme performance metal, and melding death metal with classical music and opera in ways that other bands could only dream of. Their drummer also tears the face off of any drummer on this planet right now.

Hate Eternal - Phoenix Amongst the Ashes. I was an HE fan back when they started in the late 90s and until 2011, hadn't found another album after their debut that actually impressed me. Somehow, Erik Rutan managed to bring back all the freshness and absolute brutality of their first album into the 2011 effort.

Cynic - Carbon-Based Anatomy. Another perfect musical journey served to us through the almighty Cynic. Although short, and clocking in at under 25 minutes total, this album feels like you take off floating into space and dissipate into the universe before you can come back down.

Single of the Year

Not Yet - Pera Pera Perao/Shuumatsu NotYet. I absolutely love these girls.

AKB48 - Everyday Kachuusha. I hate the B-sides, but the A-side is so damn catchy it makes up for it.

AKB48 - Kaze wa Fuiteiru. A-side and B-sides all kick ass. Way to go, girls.

Tomomi Itano - Fuini. I don't really care for "Dear J," but this song blew me away, and the B-sides are mostly good, but especially the Type C one.

SKE48 - Pareo wa Emerald. This alone made me fall deeply in love with SKE48. Every B-side is amazing as well.

Best New Artist

Not Yet - I forgot they actually started in 2011, but damn.

A Pink. These girls took me by storm. I love every song they've released so far and have given me new-found confidence in the Kpop industry as not being a complete waste of space.

Guilty Pleasure of the Year

BABYMETAL - Doki Doki Morning. I'm not a huge fan of most of the Sakura Gakuin stuff, and while its not bad, none of it would really be something I put on a constant playlist, but the BABYMETAL sub-group was like a guilty pleasure dream come true. 14 year old girls dancing to death metal-pop music.

Ayanokoji Sho (Aiaigasa) Goto Maki - Non Stop Love Yoroshiku!!!. This is pure genius. DJ OZMA is already a funny and talented bastard on his own, but him pairing with Maki and actually making her super cute and appealing again is worth of enough credit to last a lifetime.

A-side of the Year

AKB48 - Ue Kara Mariko

AKB48 - Everyday Kachuusha

Not Yet - Pera Pera Perao/Shuumatsu Not Yet

SKE48 - Pareo wa Emerald

Watarirouka Hashiritai - Valentine Kiss

Watarirouka Hashiritai - Hettapi Wink

B-side of the Year

AKB48 - Vamos!/Kimi no Senaka. Except having Sumire in "Senaka," this would be the perfect set of B-sides.

AKB48 - Dakishimecha Ikenai/Ice no Kuchizuke. I hate "Flying Get" with a passion, but these 2 songs made that CD worth buying.

AKB48 - Noel no Yoru. This has the honor of being the only Christmas song I've liked in about a decade since Tanpopo's "Seinaru."

SKE48 - Tokimeki No Ashiato/Tsumiki No Jikan

Flop of the Year

THE Possible mini album. Blech.

Overplayed Song of Shut the Fuck Up

Adele - Any song she's ever done, but mostly Rolling in the Deep. Please shut the fuck up and die, you fat British pig. Ugh.

Disappointment of the Year

Kpop trying to be in Japan.

The destruction of S/mileage.

Everyone liking that Kyary PON PON PON song when it just sounds like recycled modern Perfume, when modern Perfume is bad enough on its own.

THE Possible's new album/mini-album. It was just plain bad. It was basically a 6 track album with 5 covers, one by each girl then a new song, and all of the vocals sound like they were recorded in a fucking shack on the side of the road, besides them being bad choices for songs to begin with. :(

Concert Performance of the Year

I really don't like Jpop concerts 95% of the time, so I don't even bother watching them, but as for shows I actually went to, Cynic/Scale the Summit blew me away with a night of prog greatness, as well as seeing the Summer Slaughter tour of the year, which had 4-5 of my favorite current metal acts all on one bill, which is hard to do since I probably only give a shit about maybe 10 current acts.

Music/Promotional Video of the Year

Not Yet - Pera Pera Perao/Shuumatsu Not Yet

SKE48 - Pareo wa Emerald

AKB48 - Everyday Kachuusha

Watarirouka Hashiritai - Hetappi Wink

YuiKaori - Puppy Love

C-ute - Kiss me Aishiteru

C-ute - Sekaiichi Happy na Onna no Ko

and I'll take aine's idea of calling AKB48 - Beginner PV as coming out in 2011, too :P

Lets just say I'm done so I don't think about this too much.
