Anybody else here worship at the church of Yuki Kajiura?

Post by Gerald »

I recently stumbled across Kalafina and from there it was a short jump to FictionJunction and Yuki Kajiura.

I am now spending way too much money on DVDs and CDs as I love her compositions and she backs them up with some great musicians and some wonderful singers. I am of course, and I want to make this very clear, not the least bit hopelessly in love with Keiko, Kaori, Wakana or Hikaru.

Having had most of my Japanese musical education from Tsunku and H!P it's a bit of a shock to realise Japanese girls can seriously sing <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> .

Tell me I'm not alone.

The first two sound like some kind of Melodic Black Idol Pop.

What do the others two bands have to do with eachother ?

I love her compositions for .hack//SIGN. that's where I first heard of her.

FictionJunction is her solo act name. She'll collaborate with another singer and they'll release as "FictionJunction Yuuka" or something like that.

I have her "Fiction" album of original music and some of her anime albums, including "Noir." Ms. Kajiura composed a lot for anime and videogames. She was born on my 12th birthday. One of the singers she recruited for .hack//SIGN and some other things she's done is an American named Emily Bindiger, whom I knew in high school. So, yeah, consider me a fan.

I'm a little over halfway through the videos you listed, but I'd say this is worship-worthy. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I love it when any kind of harmony is used. It just adds more depth to the piece. I love slower songs that show off the vocalist, too. (That may or may not have anything to do with my high school band and choir career. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... joyful.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':joyful:' /> )

Yuki is the brains behind the operation, she composes (in Japanese, English, Italian, Latin), produces, arranges, plays keyboards and sometimes sings.

A lot of her music is used in anime, games and films.

As Valerie says FictionJunction came first (although she was in a two-girl group called See Saw in the 90s as singer/producer/composer.). FJ has had a number of vocalists but lately seems settled on Wakana, Keiko, Kaori (known by their first names) and Yuriko Kaida.

She then started Kalafina using Wakana and Keiko and added Hikaru who won an audition of 30,000 girls.

They seem to be pretty popular, Kalafina's last album went to No.3.

She has a lovely, haunting voice. She also features on about 5 of the tracks on Fiction II that came out last year.

Why yes, I am a longtime worshiper of Yuki Kajiura. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... joyful.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':joyful:' /> I am so happy to find another who shares my religion. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hawhaw.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hawhaw:' />

Keiko is my favorite out of her stable of singers because her voice is so deep and beautiful. My second favorite is Kaori. Her and Keiko often do their singing parts together. I actually noticed Kaori before Keiko, but since Keiko is a part of Kalafina (and therefore gets more exposure) I loved her more. And I cannot express how much I absolutely stan for Keiko. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... girlie.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':girlie:' />

FJ's recent single, stone cold, features more Kaori. Love it, love her. Synchrocity from FJ's volume 4 live is both Keiko and Kaori together (with a smabble from the Goddess herself:P). It's one of my favorite performances. Another great song is Houseki (originally sung by Marina Inoue) but in FJ lives Keiko sings it. The performance from 2008 is good, but when you watch the performance from 2009 you really see how she's more confident onstage and improved. And Dreamscape is the song that put Kaori on the map for me, and she really owns the performances. I'm having trouble finding the song that made me notice her though. She sang a small part, but it gave me chills. I guess it's melted away in favor of her feature song lol.

And shame on you Turtle, you can't have a thread about Kajiura without mentioning the two songs that really put her on the map:

(From the Noir soundtrack)

Salva Nos studio live

Canta per me studio live

Another great performance from 2008 featuring Emi Katoh from the Tsubasa soundtrack - a song of ice and fire

And Kalafina's OP to their 2010 live, Red Moon, was amaaaazing. It's a haunting song and it showcases all three members of Kalafina. My favorite part is at the end (of course) when Keiko's solo turns me into goo.

And yes, Yuriko's Wakana's goshdangitI'moncrackcocaine vanity melts me away. She really did amazing, even through her english isn't as great, the emotion she put into it slays me. And Keiko's vocalizations at the end, I have no words. It gives me aural electricity. Liminality was another great performance, listen to the dual harmonization from Yuriko/Wakana and Keiko/Kaori. <3, just <3s.

Her recent soundtrack was only included on the Puella Magi Madoka Magica limited edition blu-rays. And it's the same for America. Of course since they're released on aniplex, I have to weigh paying nearly $100 per release. The sad part? I liked the show, but I WOULD CONSIDER IT BECAUSE I LOVE KAJIURA SO MUCH. That, my friends, makes me sad. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/rofl.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

The only real complaint is that her songs trend towards the same sound. But it's like she's found her compositional niche and I can't complain.

And the best part, since I prefer lives, all of her ladies perform amazingly live. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nceman.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':danceman:' /> Yes, Turtle her stuff is worth it. I just need the 2008 and 09 on blu-ray and I will be complete until she releases another concert lol

I may ramble more later because now I'm on a youtube binge of Kajiura and I have trouble stopping. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Let's ramble more, to hell with editing (because I've already done it ten times in my former post hehehe)

Fake Wings - First you have Kajiura on piano, then Kaori comes in and lends her vocals to the somber lyrics, and Yuriko settles in at the end.

Hanamori no Oka - Another song that Kaori owns, and she slays the performance. I tip a hat to her.

Te to te to me to me - A Kalafina song that belongs to Keiko. I love the instrumentation on this, it feels like an old fairytale, almost like it came out of 1001 Nights. And of course, Keiko's lovely voice makes the song feel mysterious.

Kagayaku no Sora Shijima wa - Another somber song, but it's so beautiful.

And their classic, Lacrimosa. I cannot get enough of the performances for this song.

Some of you old school anime fans may remember this song and they KILL IT. It's not better than the original, but it's not horrible lol

Anna ni issho datta no ni - Why is it when they cover songs it's like it enters another dimension of amazing?

And this song was everywhere when it was released, gosh,Hikari no Senritsu. I've found more lives of this song than any other hahaa.

And their other classic is Oblivious. I love this performance because everything comes together. They seem ethereal.

I think you may have noticed I did not include Yuuka. I'm not fond of Fictionjunction Yuuka. /shrug I mean, this, compared to what I've linked before? No contest. She can't hang with it. That was my favorite FJY performance, by the way.

.....

I had things to do today.

One last thing - this site is the best hub for Kajiura news and the like.

Well that's it really, Melon and I are clearly soul mates, the rest of you might as well stand back as we ascend to a higher plane that you ordinary people can but dream about <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' />.

I agee with everything, even Yuuka. I bought the Yuki Kajiura LIVE Vol. #4 Everlasting Songs Tour 2009 Parts 1 & 2 and Part 1 is Yuuka, Part 2 is the other girls and Part 2 just kicks the ass of Part 1. Yuuka's voice is fine but it just doesn't have the range/emotion/strength that the other girls have.

Keiko and Kaori are brilliant (and totally gorgeous), they are completely irrepressable in concerts. In fact that's what makes the concerts so great, everybody is clearly having so much FUUUUUNNNNN.

There is a strong theme to her songs, mostly dramatic with operatic overtones but I have no trouble in recognising songs within a few notes (much more easily than I can with Tsunku's work) and I have yet to hear a song by her that I don't love.

It's costing me a fortune as I've now bought 3 DVDs, 1 BluRay and 7 CDs and I've got another 3 CDs on order, oh well It's only money <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hatthe.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whatthe:' />.

I've looked at the canta-per-me site and thought about joining the Forum but you seem to have to put at least 20 emoticons per paragraph in your post which just makes my eyes ache <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />.

Fiction Junction Yuuka's first album "Destination" is my go-to album when I need to test CD players. Especially "Nostalgia". <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

But no, I really love Kajiura's instrumental work. The stuff in "Noir" and "Madlax" was really good, although I felt Yuuka's second album ("Circus") was a bit too dark.

I'm glad to see this thread has exploded with replies from when I saw it earlier on at work, even though I expected it will be one of those sad desolate threads in this section. I have little to add after Melon's posts in which she out-fan-girls us all, but let it be known that in the golden first half of the 00's Kajiura herself and the projects related to her tended up to make some 90% of my playlists and I was positively obsessed with the music - despite all the hardships and mockery, as back then it was somewhat of a faux pas in the fandom to admit enjoying any other OST composer than Yoko Kanno (whom I also adore and respect tremendously, needles to say). <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Thanks to Melon's links I'm now on a massive roll of reliving the fond memories, which consists of playing Salva Nos and Canta Per Me on loop, with Fake Wings and a few others thrown in for a good measure. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Yes, OSTs for Noir, Aquarian Age, and .hack// used to be my daily gospel.

On the other hand, I have now fallen massively behind and didn't even realise that Kalafina, the name of which I have heard a few times, was even related to Kajiura. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hatthe.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whatthe:' /> I think it was the multitude of FictionJunctions that threw me off the track, coupled with a prolonged period of very limited intertubes access. Well, time to start catching up I suppose. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... smooch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='=3=' />

We could link every performance that exists on youtube and not a single one would be bad. lolol

Yoko Kanno has mad respect too because she's composed many classic OSTs. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> But yeah, I remember when it was uncool to like her too. And yes, she didn't put out as many osts of a stylistic variety like Kanno, but she works what she knows very well. And you know, it's just impossible to like them both. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Edit - I forgot to add, I was fanigirling but I was also so excited that I finally have people to talk about her stuff with. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

For semi-recent not so recent after checking cpm.net instrumentals , check out the Xenosaga OSTs. She did the movie scenes for the second one iirc, and the third one is entirely her. I love the movie OST. It's hard to talk about instrumentals though because you fall in love with her singers. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> The Kara no Kyokai OSTs are something else I lurve too.

I like that she performs onstage with the girls and occaisonally sings.

Her recent Madoka OST spilled over into the new Kalafina album. They compliment each other so perfectly I wonder if the girls got unused tracks from the show. That bright, happy heavenly choir sound dominates the album, even though their darkest single Magia is also on there. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I prefer the studio version of Fake Wings, which IIRC is performed by Emily Bindiger. Who also sings on the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack and is amazing.

I love this thread.

Link to the original (Emily's) Fake Wing. I like them both, Kaori fangirl notwithstanding, I almost always prefer live singing to studio. There's something in Emily's voice that haunts you when she sings. I like to think of her and Kajiura a power couple like Kanno/Maaya Sakamoto are.

Link to original vanity as well. I have to say that I prefer the live version, for the emotion in the voices. But I'm willing to bet that Emily was instructed to sing in that manner by Kajiura. I wish I could see her singing this live (Perhaps with the FJ girls providing the harmonies)

In My Long Forgotten Cloistered Sleep - This is one of my top tracks from Fiction II.

She also has songs in her own language, Kajiurago, too. A Song of Ice and Fire (I always do that to that song curse you Martin) A Song of Storm and Fire is an example that was linked earlier. The Theme of Xenosaga II is another example.

OK, I am going to check out Yoko Kanno and if I like her I shall expect a substantial contribution from aine and Melon to contribute to covering the cost of me ordering an insane amount of media <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> .

I wonder how much English Yuki speaks, using words like cloistered and liminality (which I confess I had to look up) would indicate a very high level but maybe she has somebody who translates the Japanese for her. She also used Godsibb which is Old English for godparent FFS.

I have several Kanno CDs. She's all over the place, musically, and I suspect her work is best appreciated in the context of the anime she composes for. To get the best sense of her, you'd probably have to watch all 26 episodes of "Cowboy Bebop," many of which employ different musical styles, reflected in the episode titles, e.g., Asteroid Blues, Heavy Metal Queen, Waltz for Venus, Jupiter Jazz, Bohemian Rhapsody. Some fans have complained about how frequently she "borrowed" from others' compositions for this series. Given the sheer volume of work she had to turn out for that series, it's hard to hold it against her.

She also did the music for the Ghost in the Shell TV series, "Standalone Complex," but not the GITS movies. The one album of hers I have that I most like is the soundtrack album for Macross Plus.

Record of Lodoss War is probably the first OST I was introduced to by Yoko Kanno -- I absolutely love when she collaborates with Maaya Sakamoto. I never watched Escaflowne but I love the music from that as well.

I just downloaded Fiction II and the entire Noir discography since I lost all my music when my old harddrive crashed. :D

That could be said of all OST music though. The liking of a song may be dependent on how it made you feel when the scene is playing.

My personal favorite OSTs from Kanno are Vision of Escaflowne (some tracks were done by another composer though) and Earth Girl Arjuna. The music for Brain Powerd was the best part of that horrid show, and I remember Wolf's Rain being good as well. Cowboy Bebop was great as well, I think that may be her most popular due to the popularity of the show. But anyway, at the very least, check out what she does with Maaya Sakamoto because magic happens. <3 <3 <3

(try to find Nikopatchi because every song is Kanno/Maaya iirc) Aw, this thread is making me remember/try to remember so many old songs I liked. :3 It's so nostalgic.

I... You had me at Hello.

I was twelve or so when .hack//SIGN aired on Toonami or whatever Cartoon Network had at the time, and I still remember aggressively hunting down the OST and reclaiming it whenever my computer crashed.

It's been so long since I even listened to that OST that the link to Fake Wings gave me an explosively amazing eargasm. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... smooch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='=3=' />

And holy crap, she was in See-Saw?! And Kalafina?! I had no idea. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... nfused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Feel free to keep fangirling/boying because I plan to catch up on all the years of her I've missed. She's my writing muse, and is inspired musical brilliance!

I never took the time to get into Kajiura more but have always liked what I've heard from her. I feel like I would like her as much as Kanno, given the chance. Which brings me to this:

I LOVE YOKO KANNO SO FLIPPING MUCH AND HER COWBOY BEBOP SONGS ARE AWESOME AND EVERYTHING ELSE SHE EVER DID WAS AWESOME AND SHE'S A BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT CREATURE CAN WE PLEASE HAVE A THREAD FOR HER TOO OH PLEASE OH PLEASE MOMMY I'LL BE GOOD ALL YEAR.

Thank you.

Actually, that wouldn't be a bad idea because Watanabe decided anime needed saving like Ikuhara. Errr, in other words, NEW WATANABE (director of Cowboy Bebop) SERIES WITH YOKO KANNO COMPOSING.

I'd be all over a Yoko thread since I know her music much more than Kajiura. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

And yay, new Watanabe!

I remember the Cowboy Bebop panel at the Big Apple Anime Fest (2002? 2003?) and Kanno was there and we all just fell in love with her. IIRC, Watanabe described how she was the inspiration for the "Ed" character.

OK, start a thread and post a few links to some good examples of her work to help us newbies. Or alternately hijack this thread, I won't complain <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />.
