Yes, they sound amazing. I love it when she does the minimalist instrumentals and lets the singers shine. :) (And of course, Keiko's solo lines are what I live for)

Hikaru really impressed me this PV for some reason. Her restraint made her stand out, and made her performance seem more intense. I wish she got to sing more. Wakana and Keiko got their big solos, but she never got one. A pity, because I really enjoyed watching her and wanted to see her "burst".

As for the other songs:

Mirai is an extension of her Madoka songs, which is natural because this release is for Madoka, and I enjoyed it.

Magia [quattro] is amazing with the violins. I can't decide if I like the original or this one more, both are awe inspiring songs.

Paying my respects to my Goddess and the Church of Kajiura, I give thee links to lives of Hikari Furu.

NicoNico Studio Live of all 3 tracks from the single. Yeah, the video quality is meh, but it shines where it counts - the music.

Hikari Furu Studio Live from the aformentioned live, only this time in HD goodness. (sorry about subs, it's the only HD source even if it's upscaled) I can't find the other songs by themselves.

NOW BE BLESSED.

This is really interesting, a combination of Kalafina singing Nowhere and Fiction Junction singing Nowhere.

And so I'm not linking one song, I've always loved this performance of Anna ni Issho Datta no ni

When the weather is colder I really love listening to YK's songs. I have no clue why, though she does have a lot of songs related to the seasons...

I've been looping Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni wa (eden live version) for the past week. Something about the song at ~1:50 when all three come in gives me chills.

And add to the list of FML why am I not in japan:
  • 「X’mas Premium LIVE 2012 “Kalafina with Strings”

    Location: Sankei Hall Breeze (Osaka)
  • December 22, 2012

I want this recorded and released. I don't care if it's only a cd recording, GIVE IT TO ME. Just reading about it gave me life. Image

And folks, here you have it, I am psychic!

Actually no

but there IS a rumor that Kalafina is releasing a DUAL CD BEST LIVE like Fictionjunction did last/early this year. UNF I HAVE SPENT MY ACCRUED KARMA WELL.

Considering how many concert DVDs other artists release it's about time Yuki/Kalafina/FictionJunction released more... 5 or 6 a year would be nice.

IKR. I would glady buy seasonal tours for these girls. I don't know why this is becoming my Sunday Praise the Kajiura posting, but whatever it can be my religion. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... R#>/8o.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8o' />

Two versions planned. Release date: January 23, 2013

Album: Kalafina 5th Anniversary LIVE SELECTION 2009-2012

Apparently the source is the same guy who posted about Hikaru Furu before everyone else.

And for other things, here is a translationof commentary Kajiura Yuki did on all 52 of Kalafina's songs. (src cpm.net, where people there are still upset at Maya leaving despite her only being a part of one single.)

And for other FJ news, I have recently began looking deeply into Kaori.

Good God girl is busy.

Firstly, because this is shorter, she is a part of a band named Another Union. They do not have official releases, but do have lives on their main site.

She is also part of Sound Horizon as one of their vocalists. Sound Horizon is like Yuki, being that it is a composer, revo, and his stable of musicians releasing, but unlike Yuki, it is just under Sound Horizon. Umm.. wiki to the rescue.

Sound Horizon, abbreviated by fans as Sanhora (サンホラ), is a Japanese musical group with composer Revo (Japanese pronunciation: [re̞vo]) as the leader. They call themselves the "fantasy band" and have released their works that closely resemble suites.

That's very interesting, she seems to write a lot of liner notes.

I've never been able to get into Sound Horizon, I like the music, they are great instrumentalists, the girl vocalists are excellent.... it's just that bloody overblown, overdramatic crap they pad it out with.

I like Another Union, Kaori is a great rock style vocalist.

There's a link at the bottom of the page leading to Star Line Music with the bass player, also there are Peacestone...spooky or what.

The bassplayer, who I assume has some sort of terrible facial disfigurement, plays with BabyDollSymphony who are also pretty good.

This reminded me that I randomly got one Sanhora album (Thanatos, incidentally) and loved it and been wanting to get more. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Just listen to those songs in their album versions without the corny live video and tell me they don't give you goosebumps.

I agree the live looks bad. Reminds me a lot of the otherwise great Kioku to Sora by Malice Mizer. There's just something about Japanese acts that makes them look cheap to corny to ridiculous when they try to be all gothic and epic and chills-down-your-spine. I don't know whether it's budget, or production, or something else, but it just doesn't work.

Meanwhile, Chinese artists pull off the most outrageous stuff on stage and it invariably looks great.

But I got off-topic here. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /ph34r.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I feel your pain, and I found a bootleg recording of Yuki Kajiura LIVE vol #9. (Japanese song only special)

And as bonus, recording (just sound, no video) of sis puella magica and credins justitiam (from Puella Magi Madoka Magica OST)This is from vol #7.

Another bonus, Wakana version of Hanamori no Oka. (Kaori was at a Sanhora concert)

Vol#9 was pretty good. We got a good mix of songs, classic and new. I am delighted to hear stone cold and eternal blue live. This is like the Star Wars Christmas Special VHS tape to me. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/rofl.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Bless those bootleggers, I can only wish for more.

My goods have shipped! There is also a book celebrating their anniversary with photos, interviews, ect. 236 pages but it's ~$50. Not sure if want. :\

Per cpm, Kaori has a solo album. Kalafina is releasing their 4th album, there is a special box set exclusive to France/Germany that contains all 3 albums for €30, and they are coming to Chicago.

I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE BOX GETS HERE. *EXCITED*

I forgot to link these earlier. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Type Moon Concert Clips were upped to the youtubes

Haruna Luna and Kalafina

Speaking of Luna, she released a single awhile back that was linked to an anime but I don't think Kajiura did it. She did do the OST for it series is called Sword Art Online (that has a great premise but never realizes it because otaku sensibilities).

Fictionjunction singing some of the OST songs to the series

The second day of Kalafina. (Different set and outfits)

I think these are the bulk performances, if you search Type Moon live 2012 you can find them upped individually.

Kirito is a generic lead. It's typical in that genre anime now, but after the upteenth episode of new girl loves me I dropped it. The first two episodes were spectacular though. I ended up reading the light novel instead of finishing it lol

I think in the light novels they go from mmo to mmo, it's kind of ridiculous. I also couldn't finish the second light novel (faires), I got bored.

Um, hiii. I just accidentally got into Kalafina after hearing "oblivious" last week and being unable to stop listening to it up to now. I visited iTunes to find more stuff, but there's so much and I had no clue where to start and all I could think was this thread... <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /ph34r.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I have the .hack//SIGN soundtrack from years ago, but other than that haven't kept up with Kajiura at all. Do you guys have any recommendations of which album/songs/etc. I should be starting with? 'Cause she has a lot of side projects and I've always been too intimidated by it all to try. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

Ahaha, ALL. I actually posted on the first page here (I FORGOT <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... wheely.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wheely:' />) mentioning I love Kajiura, but other than "oblivious" and "sprinter," I haven't heard anything from her side projects FictionJunction and Kalafina. This thread actually let me know she even had side projects in the first place. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' />

TO BE FAIR, I'm reading through the thread now and clicking most of the linkspam you guys threw in, so I'm getting kinda exposed as I go. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

So I mean... Feel free to throw anything and everything at me you think is awesome. I've heard her .hack stuff, a little bit from Tsubasa Chronicles (mostly just A Song of Ice and Storm and... R.R. Martin), two songs from La Petit Cossette (Moonflower and Houseki).... and I think that's it. Go crazy, Petit, I've already taken forever to check out anything post .hack anyway. :)

Short answer: ALL OF THEM.

Shorter answer: ERRYTHING

Okay... of her recent stuff, I really enjoyed the Puella Magi Madoka Magica OST. It's very ethereal sounding, except for the Kalafina track, Magia. Magia is one of my favorite Kalafina songs, but I also think it's their only song that isn't improved by singing it live. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> Wait, scratch that, I also think Progressive is better as a studio version. But those are the only two, I swear.

Kalafina just released a live album that I would recommend giving a try. It is a sampling of their most popular songs.

Of albums, I order them thus: Red Moon>Eden=Seventh Heaven

But honestly, they're all the best. One's just not as best. >>

Here are some of my favorites and their more popular songs and I'll add why even though I feel like Patrick Bateman when I do it:

Red Moon - I think I've talked about this before, but Keiko's part at the very end always gives me chills. I also enjoy Hikaru's parts.

Kagayaku Sora no Shijima no wa - I actually didn't like this song much until I heard it live. The beginning harmonies of Keiko and Wakana are beautiful and the explosive way Hikaru (especially her) and Wakana enter the bridge, leading to a haunting Keiko solo, and when Hikaru's solo comes you can really hear the emotion in her voice... I adore this song now. It's a slow build to it (aforementioned parts start 1:57 in), but it makes it all more delicious when my favorite parts come up.

Hikari no Senritsu - It reminds me of fairytale, but this song is very relaxing/calming. This link also includes sprinter, which is a great song as well. It's popish, but their harmonies take it to the next level.

Kyrie - I like the urgency of the chorus combined with the sweet almost prayer like crooning of the chorus.

Lacrimosa - This is a classic Kalafina song. They always perform it. I think it showcases all of the girls' voices well, in addition to being in general cool sounding.

Aria - Haunting harmonies, a sense of tension throughout the song, a lovely twist and a great performance from Hikaru. (this is one of the few songs that originally had the 4 member lineup. Here's the lone performance from the original lineup) It's one of my top personal Kalafina songs.

Storia - I pair this song a lot with fairytale and hikari no senritsu, because they invoke the same emotions in me. :lol It was the b-side to Hikari, if you're wondering about the similar sound.

Seventh Heaven - This song, just, this song. It gives me chills.

I'll do Kajiura later, it's getting kinda late. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hahaha:' /> But her two albums, Fiction and Fiction II are worth trying.

Not much I can add really, Petit has said it all <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />. I know I am biased but I can't think of anything involving Yuki Kajiura I don't love.

If I was being hyper-critical I would say I find the FictionJunction Yuuka is a little weaker purely because I don't think Yuuka is as good a vocalist as the other girls but it's being hyper-critical.

I've just bee listening to "The Garden of Sinners" which is a soundtrack album with Kalafina doing some of the vocals, it is very atmospheric and often very unsettling. Listen to the link, I think it is a great illustration of Kajiura's compositional genius.

Just watching Ayumi Hamasaki's "Countdown Live 2002-2003" DVD and she has two backing singers, one of whom is Yuriko from FictionJunction.

I kept looking at her and thinking "I know you" and it was only when Ayu put her arm round her as they were singing and I got a really good look at her it finally clicked  .

I had this sitting open in my browser for nearly 3 weeks now and only now got time to listen to it. I wish I did sooner!

And I'm quoting it here because I feel it is very relevant to this thread. ;/

I wonder if that's enough to summon Turtle back from his shell...

Over two months and double post? :(

Just giving heads up that ALI PROJECT stuff is on weekly sale on CD Japan. It's only 10% off (a few items 15% off), but if you were planning to buy anyway...

I think I never said that the other day I got my first Kajiura-related item, the Kalafina's Moonfesta single with the MV Blu-Ray. It's a lovely song with a cute MV. The BD mastering is minimal, it just plays the two versions of the MV and that's it. But I wish everyone (read: H!P) would finally switch to Blu-Ray for MVs. They're up in HD on youtube anyway and in just about every way DVDs are so 90s.
