Suugaku Joshi Gakuen Ep 07 sub

Post by aine »

As usual:
The premise of this thread is that you (yes, you!) can add any lines or make corrections wherever you wish, even if it's just one line. To put it one way, it's like the collaboration that goes on on a wiki, but without the wiki software. Or to put it another way, it's like the collaboration that'd go on on open source software.

There are [/will be] a lot of holes, but every little bit helps and I'm asking everyone here to expand this if they can. Don't worry about timing anything; we'll do that later. The timestamps on this are just rough guidelines to show where in the episode the lines should go.

I figure that the number that can half-ass understand what's going on is somewhat high, at least much higher than the number of people who have a full understanding and are able to take the time to do a full translation.

Just a few guidelines to make the process smooth:

- If you edit your previous post to correct the translation, mark it either by bolding the new version or striking out the old one. This will help update the timed script without missing anything.

- If you're planning to spend more time translating a longer section of the episode, make a post saying which times are you covering (eg. 2:30 - 6:00) so someone doesn't double your work at the same time. Once you're done edit your post and paste the translation.

- If there's a longer gap between the dialogues, insert a new timestamp.

- If you're skipping one line in the middle of an otherwise translated dialogue, make sure to mark it (a bunch of "???" or "..." will do).

- For now, do not mark who says what unless necessary, it makes inserting the lines into a timed script harder.

- When you spot a mis-translation, correct it!

- Focus on getting the meaning accurate, don't worry if the translation becomes too wordy or awkward. Editors will fix that.

- Enjoy, because you're awesome for contributing even one line.
Plan for today's lesson:

1. Keep checking the general SJG thread where someone will hopefully post yt links after the show airs.

2. As Al suggested, create a quick and dirty translation of the whole episode. This is the stage where everyone is especially welcome to contribute.

3. Once that's done, Al goes over the script and rewrites it if necessary.

4. In the meantime, translate the complete opening credits. I know that majority of the names are the same from episode to episode, but as they keep moving them around having them all written out makes typesetting much easier.

5. Also translate the signs. I'll post a collage of signs requiring translation once I get my hands on the episode, but feel free to use common sense in determining what may need to be translated in advance of that.

I'll have the episode in a few more minutes, then I'll watch it and hopefully have things done by dinner time. Looking at masa's word list for the episode, I'm expecting some kind of crazy military drama.

Got a good quality 720p raw, so for once there's no need for a frantic search for one.

I only fast-forwarded through to do screencaps so I don't know if it's any good, but there sure is plenty of signs and credits in this one:

It's okay if you can't read 3 to 5, I won't be too bothered if we don't have those.

14 through 17 are all in my script, with 14 and 16 matching up to what's said by the characters.

Here's everything, done before dinner!

0:00

Today I’ll introduce a new transfer student.

Tomochi’s kitty-cute! Meow meow!

0:05

DON’T SCREW WITH ME, BOY!!!

0:06

Your two characters are a lot alike, so you probably have a lot in common.

0:10

I’m the cutest!

0:12

Yeah!

0:13

Well then…

How about we give “that” a try?

0:16

Go!

0:20

Go, Sayu!

0:21

This is… To decide who the cutest girl is?

0:24

Goal!

0:26

The winner of the obstacle course…

Sayuri Tachikawa!

0:30

I’m the Number One Girl!

0:32

Everything’s a battle to see who is the top.

Yay!

0:40

When all our sempai battle, it’s always amazing, isn’t it?

Nina-sempai always wins!

She’s so cool!

It’s true~

But I wonder who she’ll battle next?

Hmm…

0:54

Mmm! Delicious!

So that’s how it is…

What kind of cell phone should I get?

Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay!

Listen up for a second.

It’s not the time to be eating mentaiko bread.

What?

Nina! Let’s fight!

Okay.

I accept your challenge!

Mmm! Delicious!

Nina-sama! Too cool!!!

Every day, someone tries to beat her…

1:46

Oh, by the way, I’ve got an interesting story!

What?

The first year students, depending on which sempai they like, have created their own little factions!

Hmm…

For example… The girls who want to be like Mami are the Shibuya Junior Police Squad, right?

1:59

To ensure the peace of this school!

To ensure!

2:03

The ones that admire Okami-san are the Gluttony Girls!

Banzai for carbohydrates!

Banzai! Banzai! Banzai!

2:14

After them…

The ones that like Nina…

Are Team Nina!

About Team Nina, I wanted to tell you there are two of them!

Hmm… I’m not really interested in that stuff…

Strange, isn’t it…

Why would those girls be so weird as to aspire to be so plain…

Huh?!?

Who’s weird?

I’m sorry!

2:34

Whoa!

I’m sorry!

I’m sorry!

Watch where you’re going…

I’m sorry!

Hurry!

This is…

Nina-sama’s favorite!

What she always eats…

Mentaiko bread!

Yeah.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Ready?

Don’t mind if I do!

3:06

Mentaiko bread’s yummy!

You’re wrong, Aki!

Nina-sempai doesn’t say it like that.

Haru, please give us a demonstration!

Delish~!

That’s it! Perfect!

How’s this?

Delish~!

Yeah, like this!

Delish~!

No, watch me!

Hey, you guys…

I know what it’s like to look up to your sempai…

But it’s important to be yourselves, too!

You shouldn’t just try to copy Nina…

Shut up! No one cares what you have to say, sensei!

Haru! Awesome!

It’s like the real Nina was here!

Like this, right?

Shut up! No one cares what you have to say, sensei!

Not quite…

Shut up! No one cares what you have to say, sensei!

A little bit wrong…

4:10

Cool!

So cool!

Cute!

Isn’t this one cool?

Okay, now that our stomachs are full, let’s do our best to be like Nina-sempai!

Okay!

So cool!

Ah!

Nina-sempai!

She’s so cool!

Cute too!

So cute!

Let’s go talk to her!

Yeah! Please, leader!

No way, I’m too embarrassed to!

Well I’ll go!

I can't eat another bite…

I’ll go then!

6:03

Ow!

Ta-dah!

I got a new smart phone!

Wow, cool!

Isn’t it? I bought it yesterday!

The apps I downloaded on it are so fun~!

You’re the only one in the class with one. You really love new things.

‘Mornin’!

Ah, Nina-sama! Look, look! A new smart phone!

Oh, good for you.

Huh?

Nina-sama just isn’t interested in it…

I guess so…

6:33

Cute!

Her aura is so different from everyone else’s.

Nina-sempai doesn't even need to study.

It’s always great to talk about her, isn’t it?

Yeah.

But I’ve been thinking about how we can…

Get Nina-sempai’s cell phone number, right?

Her e-mail address too.

Alright!

Each journey begins with the first step!

Today we will definitely learn Nina-sempai’s phone number!

Okay!

7:07

Nina-sama~! Nina-sama~!

Look, look! Isn’t the screen so pretty!

Oh, really? Good for you~

Ah, Nina-sama! Don’t be like that~

Speaking of cell phones, what brand of phone do you use?

I don’t have a cell phone!

Huh?!?

You don’t mean, Nin-sama’s never seen what phones can do?

You don’t say…

You don’t need all that stuff!

It couldn’t be… Nina-sama is…

Terrible with machines?

So that’s it!

Shut up!

I can never record any shows, whenever the show starts, I push the record button,

Huh?

Or when I try to make copies at the convenience store,

It always breaks down,

Like BOOM!

No way!

I’m sorry, Nina-sama, for laughing!

Can you use computers?

As soon as I touch it, it breaks!

I don’t get what’s wrong with them!

It’s like the stupid things have gremlins in them!

It breaks? Haha!

Gremlins? No way…

There’s nothing I can do about it!

You’re hopeless!

Shut up!

8:05

Computers…

Gremlins…

I can’t believe it! UNBELIEVABLE!

Nina-sempai can’t use smart phones…

Tablets…

Or laptops…

Someone like that existing in this day and age is so old-fashioned!

It’s just so unbelievable!

Perhaps we could…

Nina-sempai…

What?

Until now, we thought Nina-sempai was so amazing, but the truth is she's not so great…

Eh?

But, but… You can use a computer to solve any kind of math nowadays!

Probabilities, numerical analysis…

Yeah, you can…

We shouldn’t do something so simple, but…

But if we use a computer, then we can…

Then we can…

Have a chance to defeat Nina-sempai!

9:18

We can’t regret this…

I can’t believe this day has come…

Where we’ll battle the Nina-sempai we look up to so much…

It doesn’t feel real…

9:37

Sayu! Nina won’t put up with you bullying weaklings!

9:40

Your skirt is shorter than you’re claiming!

9:43

This battle is over.

9:45

No matter how you go, the first one to reach the lunchroom is the winner.

9:50

Alright!

9:52

Yuri’s goal was to use a certain box which would give her the best chance at sitting next to Kazuki.

10:00

How about it?

The trick you used…

I’ve proven how you did it!

10:07

Nina-sempai…

We can’t turn back now, right?

Right.

10:22

Hey, sensei, listen!

Nina-sama is totally analog!

What do you mean?

That’s enough for today!

No, I want to let the world know just how terrible Nina-sama is with machines!

Here, it’s fine! It’s not going to electrocute you!

Go ahead and try!

You guys are enjoying this far too much!

We’re doing this for you!

We can’t help it if you’re not interested.

I would never tease you~

I get how you feel…

You guys are terrible!

10:48

Nina-sempai!

Who are you?

They’re styled exactly like Nina.

Please fight us!

We will defeat you, sempai!

We’re little, but please don’t take us lightly.

Are you for real?

Are the soldiers rising up against their superiors?

Okay, okay, okay, okay…

You’re about a million years to early to take on Nina-sama!

Anyone that wants to take her on will first have to defeat me, her right-hand-woman!

But you’re not worth our effort…

Since you’re not really that cute…

And you’re like an old lady…

Damn you!

Please, Nina-sempai!

Nina, what will you do?

Fine with me…

I accept.

I accept your challenge!

Alright!

Sempai!

It’s a battle!

12:03

Did you hear? Haru and the others are going to battle Nina-sempai!

I heard! Who do you think will win?

It’s already decided! Nina-sempai!

Of course she will!

Nina-sempai is undefeatable!

Yeah!

12:21

And so, Nina VS the three first year girls, let the battle begin.

This is a best of three match. Whoever takes two of them wins.

The loser will be punished.

Do you accept?

Fine with me.

Of course we do!

And so, the first challenge.

The first year’s spearhead, Aki Daiba!

Yes.

I don’t know anything about my opponents, but I won’t lose.

To become the Math Boss.

To find out what happened to my sister.

To see what happens.

We’ve outgrown you.

Outgrown!

Well, if everything goes alright, she should win.

13:06

The genre is speed calculation.

Are you ready to begin?

Okay.

I’m good.

She’s using an abacus?!? Nina-sama~!

This isn’t the Edo Period!

And so, ready… Go!

Don’t tell me this…

This is a good match?

Okay!

The answer is nine billion, nine hundred ninety-nine million, nine hundred ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine.

Correct!

I wasn’t even halfway done!

Naturally, you can't beat a computer at calculations!

Yay!

Sempai, there’s no such thing as gremlins,

Shut up!

14:19

And so, the second challenge.

Second in command, Natsu Hakkejima.

Yes.

The next problem is probabilities.

This is bad. If she loses this, it’s over!

It’s okay. Nina-sama can do it!

If you say so…

And so…

Ready…

Start!

Sign: In a 50 person class, what is the probability that people will have the same birthday?

She’s really taking her time…

This pattern is going to keep continuing…

I’ve done it.

I’m nowhere close to finishing!

I knew it…

It’s fine! She might have the wrong answer.

Nina-sama can’t lose!

The answer is?

97 percent.

Correct!

We did it!!!

15:29

That’s two wins…

She lost!

It really happened!

It’s not over yet!

There’s still the final one.

The last question is worth double…

No, it should be worth triple! That’s the arrangement!

No way! You’re lying!

Of course. It’s our math school tradition.

Huh?!? Really?

Okay. The final question will be worth triple points. It’s been decided.

But then doesn’t it make the previous questions pointless?

You just don’t get it!

It’s our school’s three hundred year old t-ra-di-tion!

I don’t get it at all.

16:16

And so, the final question.

General Haru Maihama!

Yes.

I can’t lose!

I can’t lose this next one even if it kills me!

16:36

It looks like Nina-sama is nervous!

The final question has no genre.

Here is the question.

Sign: It takes 20 minutes for a mosquito coil to burn out. Using a lighter, get two coils to burn out in 15 minutes!

This one is different from the ones before it…

It's quite a formula, one you'll need both intuition and inspiration to solve. The famous mathematicians all had that spark of inspiration.

No way…

And so…

Start!

What should I do? I can’t use this to solve it…

That’s it! I’ll search the net for the answer!

This is a tough one…

What should I do?

Burn two that take 20 minutes in 15…

Can it even be done?

Do your best, Nina-sama!

Haru, don’t give up.

I can’t approach this the usual way…

I need another point of view!

When you light a mosquito coil…

When you light it…

That’s it!

It’s not a normal solution!

I’ve got it!

That’s my Nina-sama!

Please explain your answer, Nina.

18:18

It's not like counting out 20 minutes with an hourglass,

The point is how you use the mosquito coils!

First, light one of them as normal.

At the same time, light the other one at both ends.

At both ends?

You can do that?

Then, the one lit at both ends will burn down in half the time of 20 minutes, which would be 10 minutes.

When that happens, you light the other end of the one that is now half burned.

The time it will take to burn out is 5 minutes.

And that equals a total of 15 minutes!

Of course! Even I could understand that!

How about it?

As expected of Nina Machida. Correct!

The last one is worth triple points.

Nina Machida wins!

I did it!

Sine!

Cosine!

Mentaiko!

She did it!

Analog beat out digital!

19:34

It’s so frustrating…

No, of course we…

Aren’t ready yet.

The computer didn’t help us in the end.

You guys…

I’m happy that you felt you’ve outgrown me.

In the world of battles, it doesn’t matter who are the upper or lower classmates.

Nina will wait for you to challenge her again anytime.

Nina will also get stronger for you, working hard every day.

Nina-sama…

Every so often she manages to say something nice.

Thank you very much!

We will become much, much stronger!

Later we’ll have the ultimate battle!

Please!

Of course!

Thank you very much!

But…

Before that…

Time for your punishment!

Eh?

20:48

Haru and the others lost, but it was a great battle!

It was so moving!

I’m burning up!

We need to do our best too, right?

20:59

And so, let’s begun punishment time!

Yay!

You need to use the stopwatches you have to stop at exactly 3 seconds or THIS…

Balloon will pop!

Ready, start!

One more time!

Do your best!

Wrong!

One second!

Five seconds! Five seconds!

Two seconds!

One more time!

And now the second round!

21:56

Everyone! How are you doing! Nina here!

The girl that can’t stop loving Nina-sama, Sayuri here!

The characters we’ll introduce today are…

Ta-dah! Super fresh!

First year students Haru Maihama and…

Her friends Natsu Hakkejima and Aki Daiba!

Since Haru was a child, she’s been called a genius. She’s really brilliant.

She’s not happy with just getting 100 on her tests, she’s an amazing girl.

Do you believe it? That such a girl exists. Really?

The type of character that loves to study anything to raise her skills.

She’ll probably win the next math Olympics, won’t she?

That’s… Oh, wait, here I go…

Her motto is “Improvement through pain!”

That’s a tough one.

Isn’t it? She should think of something nicer.

But she’s cute, so it’s all okay!

All okay~

And using that she gathered her companions Natsu and Aki-chan…

The three of them are always talking together…

Thanks, as always! I've made the edits, but I think that the part at 10:07 basically has the same meaning.

If you think so, it's no problem. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I was thinking Fuyumi and the Gluttony Girls were the ones named after seasons, except they didn't reveal the names of two of them. I guess there are two first-years named Haru, then.

Anyway, for "Sign: In a 50 person class, what is the probability that people will have the same birthday?"

I'd say "In a class with 50 people, what percentage is the probability that there are people with the same birthday?"

Otherwise, it sounds like it's asking the probability that every person in the class has the exact same birthday (probability 2.803e-126), rather than that there exist at least two people having a shared birthday (probability 97.03%) [assuming the class is distributed with uniform probability in a non-leap year].

It's all ready, but I'm running a new encode to fix a few typos and styling mistakes that slipped through. Will put it on the tracker in the morning. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I've been wondering for the last few episodes, is it just me, or have the episodes had frame rate issues? They seem to stutter a little, like if it was originally 24 fps, it's looking more like 20 fps.

I also noticed that issue, and since no one else was saying anything I was starting to think it had something to do with my computer.

A belated well done everyone! This was supposed to be a collab sub, but Al and masa hardly give anyone a chance to contribute. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Don't take this as a complaint though - it's great we have a consistent team like that and I would never think of holding you back. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... smooch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='=3=' />

Episode 7 again tops all previous line counts at 427. It also must have had the most names in the opening credits. I swear, they're doing that just to spite me. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... dammit.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' />

An advance notice - I'll be gone for business again for pretty much the whole period of March 20-28th, so if the show ever hits its 11th episode (on March 22nd), I will only get to work on it with a weeks delay. Sorry!

Yes, there is a lot of dropped frames in the otherwise pretty good source files. It's completely irregular and occasionally it's even 4-5 frames in a row (very annoying when timing sign translations). I suspect it's just the PC of whoever is doing the capturing choking up when recording the show.

Also, looking at the two original 2.2GB transport streams that I've got, the show itself seems to be shot at 24 fps (the opening is in full 30 fps). But the raws we get are in 30 fps (29.97 exactly, but I'm simplifying here), so you get 1 duplicate frame every 5 frames to make up for that. This sums up with the stuttering effect from the frames that were apparently dropped (and thus duplicated) during the capture.

Using duplicate frames is not an ideal solution, but personally I prefer this to blended frames or interlacing/comb artefacts. But this may be a timer/typesetter's bias. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
