It excites me just to see this thread bumped. On the topic of Sailormoon reboots, I thought vol. 9 of the manga that just came out was translated way less awkwardly. It was a nice surprise. It also contained the chapter I used to stare at uncomprehending over and over in my Japanese version in high school because the outers showed up in SS and Haruka and Michiru were all snuggly on each other <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/wub.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wub:' />

I realize this is going to be the most frustrating bump in the history of all time, but...

Osabu tweeted about it recently. It's extra frustrating news because we didn't even have a date to begin with. So it went from "later" to "more later." He does promise that even though it's delayed it won't be cancelled. Miss Dream claims the reason for the delay is argument over whether the show should be aimed at children or at a more mature audience, but I can't find the tweet where he says that. His twitter is hard to navigate because half of the info is hidden in replies to people.

Since we have all this extra time and all, I decided to rewatch everything. I made a Sailor Moon tumblr to blog about my rewatch but also just so that my regular tumblr is less shamelessly spammed with moon things. If any of you guys want to follow/blog with me that would be awesome :D I'm hoping the rewatch will also give me even more design ideas, which I'll probably post about there too when possible.



I kind of forgot about Naru and Umino. I mean not really, but they pretty much disappear from the series after the first season or two. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... mellow.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':mellow:' />

It's a bummer it's delayed but I am kind of apprehensive about the whole thing. I'm excited of course but I am also scared and hoping that it won't overshadow all the already-wonderful Sailor Moon franchise stuff.

Me too. I haven't watched much new anime in a while, so I don't really no what to expect. I wish Ikuhara was in charge of this. It might turn out a little trippy but it would probably still be awesome.



I'm kind of looking at it like the action. It was all exciting because it was NEW SAILOR MOON. After actually watching the whole thing I ended up having a lot of issues with it, but there was a lot I loved about it too. There was a lot of it that conflicted with both the anime and manga, but I don't think it erased any of the original greatness. It was just a bonus alternate universe.

I've been rewatching the series since before the announcement of the reboot (um...Memorial Day weekend 2011?) so I love that others are here to reminisce with me now.



But yeah, I've been seeing Osabu's tweets too and asking him for news but he's always like "Please just wait a little longer..."



I'll have to find it but he did tweet the address to send fanmail to Takeuchi Naoko!

Yay, thanks! (And thank you to everyone else here that followed!) I've been following your Sailor Moon blog for a while now :D



I've been hunting around to find more moon-related blogs to follow, mostly to get a variety in content. I feel like all of the popular ones seem to be the same thing. People on tumblr seem to be super manga loyal, defensive of the dub, and in general wrapped up in the White Moon Family and Chibiusa/Helios. That's all fine, but I've got enough of that on my dash now. I'd like to see some more content from seasons 3 and 5, villains, outers, and starlights. =/

The Usagi/Mamoru romance is the weakest part of the show. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... eeping.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Not even the first season, when it had its "spotlight" did it excite me. I was always all about the other girls, who were cooler ANYWAY. I used to say she nuked Mamoru on purpose to make the girls look even better by comparison. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />



I also always felt bad for Usagi because she dated one guy her entire life, starting at 14! I know destiny and all that jazz, but still man. Fated loves are boring. Mamoru is inoffensive and dull. Hell, at one point I wanted her in a lesbian relationship over "Mamo-chan". <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... >/rofl.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I know girls in anime can't have multiple relationships for ~purity~ but I think they should at least try to wrench something else out of their relationship. Dammit now I'm going to sit there and think of how to make their relationship more interesting, and then I'll want to write a fanfiction about it and I am not 14 anymore!

It makes me ridiculously happy that someone else feels that way. I thought I was the only one after all the UsaMamo love fest all over tumblr.



Part of my rewatch will be to analyze their relationship more, because I honestly feel it's really weak too. From what I remember it starts out with him being kind of a dick to her when they meet as "civilians." She idolizes Tuxedo Mask because he's all mysterious and suteki and being her knight in shining tuxedo or whatever. And that's fine, but that's not love. That's just hero worship. But all of a sudden fate! Destiny! And they're so in love and together forever. Where is the chemistry? Why is it that everywhere else in the series we see the girls finding ways around fate because their civilian lives are important to them, but when it comes to Usa/Mamo it's just immediately accepted? Maaybe because Usagi is 14 and not mature enough yet think beyond "eeee romance, destiny, princes!!" Also it weirds me out how Mamoru is 17 (or 18 or older since the anime depicts him as a college student) and she's an immature 14.



I'll stop, I could go on forever. >.> I will say that I have to give the story props for making him less powerful, less cool, and often making him the damsel in distress. It was annoying how he had to always save the day early on, but in the end it was the girls saving the day every time.

I hated Mamoru in the anime so much. I wanted Seiya to bitchslap him or something when he came back and run off with Usagi and that would explain the weird demon child that was Chibiusa SO much more. But no, that never happened.



I did however like him a hell of a lot better in the live action series, throwing in a girlfriend totally put a wrench into the works but then it made it seem pedophile creepy that a college guy was hitting on a 14 year old. So... yeah.

I WANT TO JOIN THIS CONVERSATION TOO BUT I HAVE TO WRITE THIS ESSAY AAAHHHHHH.



2 second statement:

Anime Mamoru very underdeveloped but we were never supposed to really understand him anyhow given the emphasis on Usagi's character and her projections onto him. Safe to say, imo, that he similarly idealized Sailor Moon when he didn't know her identity and equated her to the girl in his recurring dreams.



I think a big reason why he easily accepted his "fate" is because his civilian life was always precariously experienced due to his amnesia and shit childhood. His past life then gives his current orphaned, identity-less existence a new significant meaning and purpose. This is completely different from Usagi who had such a fulfilling civilian life that she has to constantly negotiate who she "really is."



Anyway, I also think they toned down the chemistry precisely because its a kid's show and he's like too old for her. There is that season 1 episode with Motoki's girlfriend who goes to Africa -remember? And Mamoru and Motoki talk about the girls as being little kids, little sister-like. Manga is different, of course.
