Tsunku hangs out with Aki-P

Post by AEUGNewtype »

On December 6th, Tsunku was invited to a conference about "most influential TV personalities in Japan" or some such, where he was also receiving one of the awards. Apparently, one or more of the other awards was going to AKB48/Onyanko Club producer Akimoto Yasushi. Tsunku posted about it on his blog 5 days ago and took a few pictures while he was there.

Tsunku has mentioned on several occasions how much he likes and respects him, so I think it was inevitable the paths would cross eventually, but this is pretty fucking cool and hopefully this will mean more actual collaborations between H!P and AKB like the Yubi Matsuri and the collab between Airi and Mayuyu for UTB. The walls between idol groups need to be broken down more often in my opinion.

Tsunku has the exact same expression and pose in both pictures. lol

When I read "hangs out with", it sounded more like they had a chat/interview together and not just a photo.

They did, but didn't go into detail of what they talked about in their blogs, and its no one's business to speculate quite yet, if anything of importance was discussed.

And LOL yeah, he probably has that expression about 90% of the time he exists, but it is pretty funny.

Totally agreed. On one hand, I know that traditionally wota tend to be loyalists who devote themselves entirely to one group or even just one girl, with slightly less hardcore wota devoting themselves to one agency. But it seems like that's starting to change. Plus the fans these agencies should really want to attract, the casual fans or "average" person who isn't a one-track-minded wota, those people do like to see collaborations and enjoy listening to different groups. Most idol groups could stand to benefit from being exposed to the fans of other groups.

YES, so true on all fronts. Even though most of the wota end up having some exposure to the other groups or agencies out there just through association, word of mouth, or internet, maybe the agencies and the girls themselves actually working together will stand to show those that are single-minded that it isn't just some kind of bitter "either/or" rivalry and that you can enjoy and support more than one at a time. And some positive general public attention would also definitely help most groups out there today, even the ones that are already on top of the game like AKB. They're already the most successful group in the world right now, even with a minimal amount of financial support from the general public.

Unfortunately, as sarcastic as you may be aiming to be, this is actually how a huge amount of idol fans are. Maybe its something that's a lot stronger now than it was in the past (since there are more choices to pick from in the idol industry now than pretty much ever before) or maybe its something that overseas fans are more inclined to do as opposed to Japanese wota (maybe its a carry-over of the way more Americans are raised to think of everything as an either/or rivalry, like a spill-over from popular pro sports,) but its a REALLY common thing with H!P fans now, though most people who come to this board are much more reasonable than other fans I see on the other boards like H!O, JPH!P, FB groups (though this has mostly always been the case.)

Also, you were only 2 exclamation points away from making a First Contact reference!

I actually think this is fairly limited to fans of female idols, for whatever reason. Most Johnnys fans like more than one group, even if they're largely devoted to one and only casually follow the other. They're also more likely to enjoy both male and female idols, i.e. Arashi and AKB, Hey! Say! Jump and Momoclo. But that may be because Johnnys has a huge fan base with a much broader range of people. I imagine that back in the days of the major MM craze there were a lot more people who were happy to listen to both MM and Suzuki Ami despite the rivalry.

I think you're correct on everything there. I actually recently just bought a book that I've been sharing around the idol community that is a college course-level academic companion that is a study of idols and their effect on Japanese culture and media, and there are a few entire chapters devoted to fans of male idols and a few on females as well, and even though there are a TON of similarities between them, it does seem like the fans of male idols are generally more accepting and a broad range of people, like you said. The book studies some of the possible psychological reasons behind all these types of fandom and also studies the inner workings of the industry itself as a business.

If anyone here is interested in reading a really well informed book about idol and media culture in Japan, I have it in a few e-book formats that I can share with you guys. Its rare to see anything written about idols in English that isn't some biased weeaboo horseshit from Kotaku or TokyoHive or something, but this book is a world apart from all that garbage internet journalism and is an extremely intelligent and pertinent look at the idol industry over the last 30 years.

Like I said in another post, I think the fact that there are SO many idols in the industry today that it makes some really devoted fans even more devoted since they feel like their idol could be taken over at any time by one of the other rising or upstart groups. I think this is a big part of what has created this even more centralized and exclusive type of fandom in recent years. The book also mentions this, and there is a fairly accepted industry knowledge of this current era of idols being really over-populated and it being an era where the use of idols in the media has been a lot larger than compared to most eras of the past and it is officially referred to as the "idol warring period" (aidoru sengoku jidai or chou aidoru jidai) Besides just being crowded and extremely media-focused, there is generally a lack of a central authority and competition can be more fierce, with everyone struggling to find their own niche in this huge market. Since, to wota, idols are generally perceived as someone or something to be "protected," I guess this would also apply to protecting them from their looming competition as well.

There are BA/MA thesis on Japanese pop culture here at our institute of East-Asian studies and they're all pretty interesting and well written, but unfortunately all in German.

Eh, some rivalry and favouritism is natural, it's just the extremes to which some people take them and the ensuing butthurt that spoil the fun for everyone else. And if it's anything like politics or big business, then probably some 10-20 years down the road we'll learn that they were all working together behind the scenes to manipulate the charts or something. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/meh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';/' />

This is a pretty big theory that is also covered in the book. The idol jimusho system is pretty complicated and has actually been involved in a number of scandals and court cases involving tax fraud, private or fabricated financial record-keeping, yakuza involvement, money laundering, etc. Everyone also probably remembers how the guy who runs the entire Johnny's organization has been publicly accused of child molestation of his idols, etc. You should find some of this interesting.

Its pretty confirmed at this point that idol management companies split themselves off into smaller mini-agencies so they can make internal deals and be able to do things a little bit more secretly and take the attention off of the bigger parent company and they don't publicly declare that they're part of the same company, even though some deeper investigation has revealed that this is true.

I sent a copy to everyone who responded so far, you should have it in your PM boxes.
