Sakanaction - Sakanaction

Post by Pucchi-Mo »

Sakanaction just released their 6th album.

It had a worldwide iTunes release, this is a first for them.

01. intro

02. INORI

03. ミュージック (music)

04. 夜の踊り子 (yoru no odoriko)

05. なんてったって春 (nantettatte haru)

06. アルデバラン (aldebaran)

07. M

08. Aoi

09. ボイル (boil)

10. 映画 (eiga)

11. 僕と花 (boku to hana)

12. mellow

13. ストラクチャー (structure)

14. 朝の歌 (asa no uta)

15. 『バッハの旋律を夜に聴いたせいです。』(Ks_Remix)[bach no senritsu wo yoru ni kiitasei desu.]

This band has grown so much, the singles are strong, the album tracks are strong. It is a cohesive beast of 14 tracks (and a bonus remix in the special edition)

This album is best with headphones. There are beautiful subtleties that might be lost otherwise.

01. intro: I didn't expect for this to be musical, and it really isn't. It's a collection of water drops and footsteps, with filters.

02. INORI: This seems like a concert intro, and it probably will be used as such in this tour. It has a nice buildup and it's made up of sounds that remind me of tracks later in the album. There are no lyrics, but there is a chorus that comes in, giving it a somewhat church choir sound. Fitting, since the title means prayer. It's basically "Holy House Music"

03. ミュージック: The most recent single. It's strange, Music doesn't stray from the first melody you hear as it begins, but it repeats it with new instrumentals and at different speeds. From this description, I would probably say "no, thank you," but this single grabbed me from day one! The song starts out so gentle and calm, and the lines are delivered like someone is slowly contemplating. This will later become very lively in the final chorus, it references the past verses and it's like thoughts are racing at full speed. I think the chorus is the best they've created in a very long time.

04. 夜の踊り子: This was the single released before Music. It has an interesting combination of traditional Japanese melody with club music. The bass melody vaguely reminds me of Swedish House Mafia's One (Your Name) which I question because visually, One (Your Name) & Yoru no Odoriko look pretty similar. Coincidence? Maybe... Anyway, it jumps right into a funky beat, but it has a trick up its sleeve at the end. The lines are extremely compartmentalized with the members of the band. Lead singer Yamaguchi sings the verses, male members do the Wo-Oh part, the female members sing the do-re-mi melody part. Then dramatic build up... which just leads to another verse and we repeat. They actually don't get to the chorus until 3 minutes in. The ability to take the song to a new level is why I love Sakanaction. They just do it so well, also proven in track 3. It's like foreplay for your ears ...but not in a gross way.

05. なんてったって春: I swear the title looks like a Morning Musume song. I guess Nanchatte Renai comes to mind. It's actually a dark, badass, kinda retro synth dance track. I like the ominous bass and the guitar parts. So much attitude, it's a pretty simple song too, but just in the sense that it's very resolved. The chorus is very catchy and smooth, it stops in the middle of words to create this pattern where the lines end with "Na". I love the crazy percussion in the instrumental break. This is a new sound for them. This track instantly stood out.

06. アルデバラン: More funky beats, this one seems more 70s, I think. The chorus makes me think of old martial arts action movies. The repetition of the first word in each verse is a main feature of this song, every line does it, but it works. I love the drums that jump between the L & R channels. There are a lot of bell and chime elements in the non chorus parts. It has a cool groove.

07. M: I haven't figured out why it's called M. It sounds like they took Yoru no Odoriko, but made it faster, brassier and instead of Japanese, it was given a slightly Middle Eastern? influenced instrumental, especially the percussion. It's like desert club music, it really kicks in during the 2nd half and it's great. I don't know if the influence is a hint at the title's significance. It's so dancey and energetic. I really like the funky guitar. The chorus with the female lead sounds like a popular American club song from a few years ago, I heard it recently. It's the melody and her octave. Gonna drive me crazy.

08. Aoi: They reversed their singing pattern. The group sings the verses as a choir and the lead singer does the chorus alone. This song has the heaviest guitars (overall sound too) of the album. Come to think of it, they really toned down their guitar sound to showcase the electronic music side of the band. It has a sort of spacey synth intro, then a constant driving beat kicks in, but it is even more energized in the chorus. This is being used as a soccer theme song, it all makes sense. I like the repetition within the chorus, and that consistent piano in the background. They knew how to make this catchy.

09. ボイル: The sweet piano song. It had to appear eventually. There's more to this track than that! There's this sidechained sound that comes after the intro, but it melts away for the verses, and we're left with piano, synth bass, and a sort of breakbeat inspired percussion. I like the part where he gets tired from saying the fast dramatic line and lets out a noticeable sigh while the piano solo has started.

10. 映画: This song is the reason for the intro track. They're experimenting with real world sounds like footsteps, clanking cups, cars, conversations, etc. They released a more experimental version of this as Music's B-side. It has a heavier beat now, and it's very lo-fi, at first... The ending is very pleasant and refreshing.

11. 僕と花: Now we reach the first single from this era of Sakanaction. In the context of this album, it makes so much sense now. The subtle background elements, the sort of aged sound, it's funkiness and simultaneous emotional sound. I love the echoing organ and the prominent bass guitar.

12. mellow: The album is called Sakanaction, the lead single is called Music, and here we have a chill-out track called Mellow. This is a really nice track, the first synth loops in a way that almost sounds backwards, I think it's because the tone quickly gets louder and then abruptly becomes soft again. Featuring a really nice buildup, this track concludes with a beautiful floaty Washed Out-like sound as Yamaguchi sings the last chorus.

13. ストラクチャー: It's all instrumental. It reminds me of the game Little Big Planet at times. It starts with a twangy acoustic guitar repeating the same melody, and then other elements overtake it, but eventually they all work together. This also has real world sound effects at times, it sort of sounds like a jungle. It gives the feeling of world travel. Like many Sakanaction tracks, it has the band singing Lalala together. I imagine them in an African village, but it's more about unity and less about singing with the super dramatic choir sound.

14. 朝の歌: This feels like the last track. it just has this very melancholy, kind of nostalgic piano, but still feels hopeful at the chorus. I really like the falsetto lines. It doesn't go out with a particularly big finish, but maybe this is why they added a bonus remix at the end.

I have yet to hear the remix, it'll be on my CD when it arrives... I think I'll wait until then.

Overall, this is the most solid album from this band for me.

Time for the Top 5:

5.Aoi

4.Boil

3.M

2.Aldebaran

1.Nantettatte Haru

Do they still make music like Aruku around ?

I always thought like getting to know them better, since that song is so wonderful and the music video is spectacular, but I never got around to do so.

Well, they've had clever songs and music videos since that point. This album uses more synth elements than they have in the past, so if that's what you liked about Aruku Around, then you may be pleased by the newer stuff.

Victor Music's Official Youtube page made a PV playlist. maybe start there.

Music & Yoru no Odoriko both have PVs with parts that synch to the beat.

From the last album [DocumentaLy] Endless has a beat synched PV as well, plus it's a great song.

Also,Bach... which has a remix on this album. The ending of Endless is basically how Bach starts.

I'm really just going to eventually list every single they have, watch the playlist, some of them are adds for releases though.

ROOKIE PV This is older, people say it reminds them of Born Slippy.NUXX ...Well yeah, it does.

They released a live album a little while ago called "SAKANAQUARIUM ZEPP ALIVE 2012 sequence of 18 tracks" That's a great way to learn their discography and hear their excellent transition skills. I'd recommend that as a quick catch up, it has something from every era.

After watching the album documentary on the bonus DVD, it was revealed that a lot of Music(the track) was scrapped. Scrapped from the single, but not from the album... INORI was actually created from some of the unused ideas of Music.

It's in this audio recording.

At around 1:36, you'll hear the part that was remade for INORI.

The rest of it was lost, but I think they were playing melodies of popular songs and seeing how they could turn it into something new.

It seems like that's what happened with the chorus of M, slightly.

I've spent some time with the album now, and I can say that I like it as a whole. I don't have any favorite tracks because each song just flows to the next. I don't think about listening to the songs so much as I think about listening to the album. It's great to listen and to have on for ambient noise.

It's here...

Lyrics and Translations

(it has about half of the album's tracks translated)

Well shit, I didn't know that Ap2000(people on the dance floor) didn't have the album until this month. (according to Aquachan's thread and thanks for uploading it for everyone)

I still am curious about what you think of their sound now, Ap2000.

I'm still enjoying this album and INORI is steadily becoming more interesting. My top 5 is pretty much the same, maybe Aldebaran switches ranking with M occasionally.
