Pretty much. I'm not sure who will have her on the respectable side of the industry, either. You can't swing a dead cat in Japan without hitting a former idol, so it's not like she's in any way irreplaceable. Plus, outta sight, outta mind.

Even though most of this is her fault, I still feel bad for her. She really can't do anything anymore. She wasn't the biggest personality, but anybody who knows her now will always associate her with the affair. On paper, it seems like her life may as well be over.

I feel bad too. Having an affair is sleazy, but I don't think it should be a complete career destroyer. People are acting like she murdered someone.

Plus, she's 30 and has been doing this since she was 15. She doesn't even know how to do anything else.

She's a celebrity, so the reality is that her career is based entirely on how much people like her. Yeah, this whole thing shoouuld be between Mari and her ex (?) husband, but celebrities just don't have that luxury of privacy.

I wonder if the same thing could happen outside of the entertainment world...

I don't feel all that sorry for her, and I used to like her a lot. She knew better than most the consequences of being a celebrity and getting caught in an affair like this, and did it anyway. Whether it should be a career destroyer or not in some people's eyes is immaterial to me, because the fact is that for an idol it tends to be a career ender, and Yaguchi knew it.

Her best bet is to lay low for several years, at which point she might be able to pull of the contrite former idol learn-from-my-mistake act, but even that might not be possible without a husband and baby. Otherwise, yeah, hope she managed her money well and didn't piss it away on booze.

Exit question: Assuming the alcohol abuse is true (do we know it for a fact?) is Yaguchi officially a bigger train-wreck than Kago now?

It's no secret she likes to drink, but that she has problems with it are just rumors. She also owns a restaurant, so assuming that hasn't gone up, she still has some sort of income.

Wasn't it mentioned that her and husband were already living apart and pretty much separated when she was caught with the other dude? I'd think what she did was worse if it didn't seem like their relationship was already pretty much over even before all that happened.

I thought the reason they separated was because Mari cheated. It's just that the media didn't catch the cheating until someone spilled it later on.
And I don't think one' job should be lost just because of what she did in her private life which apparently doesn't violate anyone's benefit except for her husband which isn't for anyone to judge. I am very irritated that if Mari is a guy she will not lose her job or get hissed at and accused of being a whore. Not that I like her or agree with her though.

Her entire job was about her image. She wasn't a respected actress or singer or anything of the sort. She was what they call a "talent," which is essentially a person famous for being famous. She went from being a former MM member, to that lady who was always on TV because she was on TV. The image she presented herself as was everything, and with that image destroyed, she's got nothing.

There's also the part where her husband's agency is supposedly the most powerful one in Japan and had the power to get her completely blacklisted from entertainment, which is super serious business in Japan. It takes years to get back in the spotlight after that happens.
