The MM-BBS, Best and Worst of '15

Post by Shoujo Q »

I thought this should be a thing. A cap for the end of the year where I dig up everything that happened in 2015 (thanks in part to the fine folks at H!P Wiki for doing a majority of the work) and let you have your final peace with the year before we go storming into the next year. Also, I'm off work now until the 4th so I have the time and I'm bored. xD

Welcome to 2015, it was a very challenging year. And here's a quick recap of what happened for those who only semi-payed attention throughout the year.

We lost a lot of cornerstones in Hello!Project this year and gained some new ones in its place. With Michishigie Sayumi gone, C-ute and Berryz Koubou became the top two units in Hello!Project, dropping Morning Musume down in ranks. Yajima Maimi became the new leader of Hello!Project as C-ute celebrated their 10th anniversary this year.

Tsunku stepped down as head producer after losing his voice to cancer and Berryz Koubou went on indefinite Hiatus in March, through Shimizu Saki and Tokunaga Chinami became Hello! Project Advisers, Saki would begin working with the Kenshuusei while Chinami joined Miyabi to create a new YouTube series, Green Room, but by the end of the year Chinai left to study English. Speaking of English, Aika returned from New Zealand in April and promptly took over Up-Front Links as a English corespondent as well a concert reviewer. (If you leave her a message, she will sometimes respond to you.)
Country Girls came in like a wrecking ball and then promptly lost one of their rising stars in Shimamura Uta. With the Hiatus of Berryz, two Kenshuusei groups formed to contiue on with the spirit of Berryz Koubou (They'll be singing their songs), Kobushi and Tsubaki Factory. While Kobushi dominated, Tsubaki stumbled. Speaking of stumbled, Morning Musume'15 hobbled along thanks in part to Suzuki Kanon injuring herself and requiring Miyamoto Karin to step in as her dance double in the first MM'15 release of the year. But Morning Musume being the amazing group they are, bounced back with the 2nd single.

We got the shocking graduation announcements for Fukuda Kanon, who graduated in November, Sayashi Riho, who graduates at the end of the year and Tamura Meimi who will graduate in the spring of 2016. But also welcomed Kenshuusei, Yanagawa Nanami and Funaki Musubu into Country Girls and ANGERME surprised us all by holding an audition and only bringing in 1 new member to the group with Kamikokuryo Moe.

And there you have a quick recap of 2015. Now here's your time to shine. I did the work for you, now it's up to you to decide in true, MM-BBS fashion. The best and worst of the year!

Best/Worst Song Overall in '15
Order by Group. For Berryz, C-ute, ANGERME and Juice=Juice, only new or unreleased tracks from albums are up for consideration. Tsubaki Factory's 2nd Indie single is being released on 12/31 so it didn't make the cut off for this and it sucks anyway so I didn't even bother but if you feel like adding it, it's Kedakaku Sakihokore!. The Kenshuusei album was also disregarded as all the songs were old as dirt.

Favorite member: Nonaka Miki
Worst member: All of Tsubaki Factory
Favorite debuted newbie (shouldn’t Kobushi be in this group?): Nonaka
Worst debuted newbie: Ogata Haruna
Favorite undebuted newbie (and Tsubaki here?): Yanagawa Nanami
Worst undebuted newbie: Tsubaki if they count; otherwise, Okamoto Honoka (sorry not sorry)
Single:

Best: Itooshikutte Gomen ne / Koi Dorobou

Worst: That stupid Ramen song
Album:

Best: 1 Let’s say “Hello!”

Worst: probably the Very Berry soundtrack
PV:

Best: CHOICE & CHANCE

Worst: That stupid Ramen song
Song:

Best: Either CHOICE & CHANCE or Dondengaeshi

Worst: That stupid Ramen song
Best Concert: GRADATION
Best Dance: Oh my wish!
Worst Dance: Tamerai Summertime
Most shocking event: Riho’s graduation, the creation of Tsubaki factory
Biggest disappointment: Berryz graduating on my birthday, Tsunku announcing his leave as producer, everything about Tsubaki Factory… Miyabi’s group not finding any members? (could be a good thing… might increase the likelihood of a Buono! comeback ;) )

I don't have the patience to type this out, but I wish I could rescind my vote because I completely forgot about Tsubaki when I voted J=J worse.

The problem Juice=Juice had this year is that they basically did what Platinum era Musume did. Focus on themselves and their performance and not really release as much. I feel like they are more a performance heavy group like C-ute/Melon Kinenbi and not so much an idol group like Morning Musume/ANGERME. Also the group is more an acquired taste since they have so few members too.

Voted C-ute for best group. They really won me over after Berryz split and seeing them live is just so, so good. Worst? Idk Country Girls seemed like they struggled this year, I still like them though.

Favourite Member 2015: Saki Nakajima
Best concert: ℃-ute Concert Tour 2015 Aki ~℃an't STOP!!~ - I saw two of these and they absolutely slayed. I saw PRISM too which was incredible as well but the C-ute concerts just made me so happy.
Best Song Overall 2015: The Middle Management
Best Single 2015: Arashi wo Okosunda / Arigatou Mugen no Yell
Most Surprising or Shocking Thing to Happen in Hello!Project'15. (List as many as you want.): Riho graduating, Meimi announcing her grad

I only voted in a few categories. I really really fell for C-ute this year though. Being in Japan helps. They put in 10000% into their live concerts and events and they just sparkle. They clearly like each other better than Berryz ever did too.

Holy crap, I have no clue how I missed this release, but this song is amazing and just skyrocketed Angerme up from near bottom of my list to MM's biggest contender for favorite group.

I'm guessing this is Takui, or whoever made Taiki Bansei too, but I am all for this sound if this is what he's going to keep doing for the Anger girls.

I'm also learning to start hearing their Anjer myu pronunciation or whatever instead of Anger Me, so there's hope for them yet. I think they'll be the next C-ute for my surprising ranking skyrocketing favorites, and I've been waiting for Rikako center forever.

ANYWAY, this thread isn't about Angerme and I know that, but now I don't know how to rank anything and my whole year-end list is now screwed, lol

It's not Takui; it was written by Hoshibe Shou (lyrics) and Uchuu Kei (music), two newbies to H!P but both very talented. Hoshibe has written some of the best songs of the year imo.

Some small things

-Kana Mikame left the KSS program this year
-I think the Dschinghis Khan Piston remix was already released (unless you were meaning in H!P then nevermind)
-C-ute also released an acoustic version of GamushaLIFE on vinyl versions of Arigatou/Arashi
-Juice=Juice also had the DVD+CD rerelease of their stageplay, which had like a bunch of extra songs too

I'll end up doing this later today :D

On Riho being your worst for being overrated, I can think of a lot of members that are overrated and they still don't deserve to be called worst. Whether she can or can't sing is a matter of opinion, but how is she worse than the members who can't sing or dance? I can think of a lot, can't you?

Eh, I love Riho (surprise surprise), but I'm someone who can't deal with overrated things, so I can understand Kiyo's sentiment here. I'm apathetic to the girls who can't sing/dance but stay in the background, but I'm ruthless when a girl can't sing or dance AND is being shoved in my face nonstop. I think many BBSers would've hated Koharu a lot less if she'd stayed in the background more, or at least gotten the robo-Sayu treatment as a bare minimum.

Riho is much more talented than most of MM's members past and present, but there are still better singers in the group now who should've handled the hard lines H!P kept giving to Riho over the years. When a poor singer seemingly gets to outshine the better singers at, y'know, singing, people like me start to get crunchy.

For this reason, I don't get why we can't go back to songs like As For One Day where we heard the good singers and saw the pretty ones. It's been proven to work and it's entirely possible, so I don't get this AKB-esque center mentality where we now have to have a single standout member instead of emphasizing the strengths of the individual members who make up the whole.

Anyway, rant over. Sorry for the tangent, but it's been bugging me about Riho from the beginning so I felt the need to air it somewhere.

I can understand his/her sentiment on a "I can see the logic" level, but I don't think that applies as "worst" here. To label her as worse than Harunan, than Sayumi (though she's gone), is obviously just hate and not an actual assessment of ability.

But Thea is Riho oshi so I'll always be here to defend her. :eekrun:
