Man voice was all the rage in the mid to late 2000s in H!P. Everybody was doing it! 
 
Berryz didn't start sounding weird to me until they were older, but that's the trend and also what happens when you debut 10 year olds since you have no idea what they'll sound like five or ten years on. Look at how messed up Mai sounds now.
