I don't think they make the active decision to give groups stuff they think isn't as good as other groups. They're just using different composers and arrangers now, and sometimes it's really awesome and sometimes it's not.

That's one part. The next part is the effort they put into costumes and MVs. How they want to promote the single.

Waratte's video is a massive disappointment. They clearly blew their budget (and creative mojo) on Shuukatsu. There are a lot of 80s music-video staging techniques employed here, but I wish they'd have just committed and gone full-on retro with everything, from styling the girls to shooting it with a more harsh looking video. It fits the music, and they could have made an interesting PV while still doing it on the cheap. Instead, the the video has a soft look, as does the girls styling. It's a missed opportunity.
 
Hana Moyou is de rigueur "H!P White". The song is both unobtrusive and unspectacular. Two outta three ain't bad.

Just the opposite for me. I love this song, but while I've softened a bit on the video, I still think they missed the mark. I love the concept, but if you're going to ape a very specific period genre (mid-80s British New Wave) this hard, just go all the way with it. It's not a deal-breaker for me, because the music is what's important, and Waratte is killer.
 
EDIT: During the course of writing up a longer review of this for my blog, I decided that the only reason the modern styling bugs me so much is that they got so many of the other details right, which makes the choice of modern dress, hair and makeup all the more puzzling and annoying to me.

I'm really over the whole white only outfit phase. It was nice in the beginning, now it just feels lazy and uninspiring. 
 
I like how they stuffed Kiki in there despite her injury which also gives you a good dating on when this particular music video was made.
 
Now tell me why they couldn't do this with Masaki? I mean, they did it with Aika. Just a mild pet-peeve. You don't need to answer. xD

Hana Moyou is like 110% a C-ute song.... I kinda like everything but the chorus.

While I was watching Hana Moyou I was thinking the Waratte outfits would have made more sense, or even the outfits in member colours would have been better. I liked the song.


Another stray thought I had was, for a song about smiling they didn't really seem to do a lot of it in the Waratte music video.

I liked Shuukatsu and Waratte immediately, but Hana Moyou has grown on me with a few listenings. It has a nostalgic aura in that it sounds like C-ute could have done this 10 years ago.

Debuted at 5 on Oricon. 3 sold 60k so top 3 for the week is already out the window.
