I've been listening to a band called Gacharic Spin that I'm really enjoying. Their drummer and their keyboardist do the vocals since their main vocalist left.

Has anyone here heard of Miki Imai? I was in Book Off and thought the name sounded familiar, so I looked her albums over in the $2 sale section and recognized one song, "Boogie Woogie Lonesome High Heel," which was once performed by Yuko Nakazawa on Uta Doki! Pop Classics. That was as good a recommendation as any, so I picked up two of her albums, "Retour" and "Ivory," which has that song. Turns out she was born in 1963 and has been active since 1986. She's married to musician/composer Tomoyasu Hotei, who's represented on the KILL BILL VOL. 1 soundtrack. She did the voice of Taeko, the adult protagonist in Studio Ghibli's animated drama, ONLY YESTERDAY (1991), a magnificent film. I'm listening to "Ivory" right now and her singing is simply beautiful. Her rendition of "Boogie Woogie..." is much softer than Yuko's. There's a jazz singer vibe to some of her songs.

Why haven't I known about her? Why has she not been on my radar? Why has she not been on any of the FNS Music Festivals I've seen (four of them) or Kohaku Uta Gassen?

There are always new discoveries to be made.

I just got back from a Lindsey Stirling show. She was very amazing, and super personable. More when I'm not dead tired.

I didn't know she was touring; thanks for the heads up! Even though a lot of venues are sold out, I was able to snag tickets to the one nearest me.

The most watched music videos on MTV ("best selling" as they call it) on the 90s:

Pretty interesting, I'd say.

Well I dont actively follow them, I just catch up on everything all at once every so often and I'm a little behind eight now. But yes, they are amazing.

Some of my favorites are Limited Addiction, Unmei, Bad Flower, and Kodo no Himitsu.

I haven't heard their new album and I don't follow them in the same way that I follow H!P but I love Tokyo Girls Style. They put out some great music and PVs. I haven't heard their new album but my favorite songs out of all of theirs that I've heard are Kodo no Himitsu, Limited Addiction, Tsuioku, and Sayonara, Arigatou.

Does anyone here know where there's a tracklist--in English--for the latest FNS Kayosai (Music Festival), recorded on Dec. 3, 2014?
I picked up the DVDs for that tonight but have no idea who's on it.

Thanks.

Thanks, Kira. I found Fuji TV's tracklist in Japanese, so I can use your performers' list to i.d. the performers listed in Japanese only. Sounds like a lot of the same performers from previous years are back. At least AKB48 and Mai Kuraki are there.

Not many people outside Japan know this guy but he is very popular in Japan right now. Chris Hart is an African-American singer from California who sings and speaks flawless Japanese. He is amazing (and my role model)! He will make his second Kouhaku appearance on Wednesday.

"Mamoritai" is one of the original songs that he released this year.

He sings a lot of cover and ballad-type songs. Here is his sub-channel on Youtube if you want to listen to more/

Thanks for the heads-up. This gives me a reason to pick up Kouhaku Uta Gassen when it shows up next week in my Japanese video store. I'm curious to see him perform in that context.

I delve into some J-pop prehistory on my blog, taking a look at Shizuko Kasagi, who was popular years before Hibari Misora and who hit it big with "Tokyo Boogie Woogie" two years after the war ended.
She was in a movie by Kurosawa, DRUNKEN ANGEL, in which she performs "Jungle Boogie," and I include some paragraphs on it from a book I've been reading on the "Geopolitical History of J-pop."

A 3b Jr idol has been in a coma after inhaling helium:

That's a pretty major fuck up on the studio's part, and I hope for their sake that the idol's family doesn't choose to go legal on them. Or maybe I'm just thinking of America, where people seem quick to sue for everything.

By adult, it actually just means that only adults should be using it to fill balloons and stuff. Theoretically, helium is no more dangerous for a child than an adult, so I'm not sure they'd have a legal leg to stand on (I'm no lawyer though).

And someone posted a photo from what I presume is the show and it looks like they were closing their nostrils when inhaling the helium, which.. seems dangerous because in that case the helium has no way to escape the body.

The impression I got from it is that the machine they were using was made with an adult's body in mind for inhaling it. I'm no scientist, but my guess is that she inhaled too much helium and deprived her brain of enough oxygen to stay conscious or something. An adult's body could probably take a higher amount of helium before any problems started, so my impression from my quick read-through is that no one responsible for the segment took the girls' safety into account while they were doing it

If they used a balloon full of helium instead of a machine, then I have no idea, but her safety was still in the hands of people who clearly weren't paying enough attention to what was going on. This is all wild guessing on my part since so little was said in the article, but "reckless endangerment" was the first thought in my head for legal action.

I'm also not promoting the idea that the parents go legal (especially with an offense that may not even exist in other legal systems), but I feel like a lawsuit would be the first thing to happen if this happened in America. We're kinda sue-happy here, especially parents suing someone over their child's safety.

My post is just what a Japanese speaker on H!O said after looking into it. They're actually inhaling straight from the can:
Image

I don't know if that's the actual girl in question, but it looks like fans have already figured out who it was from her age and because her name starts with an A.

This is what the H!O user had to say about it:

'The articles who mention her specifically only refer to her as 12-year-old A-chan, which leads us to believe that it was Aira (she goes by a stage name of one name only). Also, the can says, "For adult use only," because only adults should be using it responsibly to inflate balloons, not because they can tolerate the gas, as adults have suffered from air embolisms and died from inhaling it previously, as well.

While I don't want to undermine what happened to her or make light of the company not taking proper safety precautions, this is an exceptionally rare occurrence and it's difficult to place blame when they are far from the first company to do a bit like this for entertainment and definitely not the first idol company, either (never mind the many of us who have done it for fun at parties). The most you can say is that they should have used balloons or a depressurized can or not done it at all, but it's a tragic accident where no one could have foreseen it happening. Others who have suffered an air embolism and survived have had very quick and normal recoveries, so let's hope the same goes for her.'
