Up-Front Works intrigued by Gee? (SNSD song)

Post by sadude »

I read this earlier today and found it fascinating, especially after having become obsessed with this song recently. Check it out if you haven't yet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eodFU4b237s&fmt=18

-------------------------

The “Gee” Virus might be spreading to Japan

http://www.allkpop.com/index.php/full_stor...ading_to_japan/

Up-Front Works, a record company in Japan held an open audition looking for new talent from April 10 - 12. During the auditions, they noticed that more than 60% of the applicants performed the hit song "Gee" from Girls' Generation / SNSD. The Judges, who work as Japanese Producers, were perplexed at why so many girls were performing this song. They asked themselves, Why do so many girls love this song so much? In addition, they didn't even know what "Gee" was, so like most people do... they looked it up on the internet.

After researching "Gee" on the internet, they concluded that it was an amazingly catchy song and very well produced. They also discovered that the song was done by a Korean Producing duo named E-Tribe (who also did Super Junior's "It's You"). So these producers contacted E-Tribe and asked him if he wanted to be a judge for an upcoming collaboration audition between Korea and Japan called ‘DaeDongKyung Girl.’ Producers from Up-Front Works have also shown interest in working with E-Tribe to try to replicate some of that catchy music craze in Japan as well.

Anyway... I've seen 'Gee' popping up on the internet here and there. It's a nice song and the video is the right way to take, oh, say, 9 members dressed almost identically and make them interesting even if I've never heard of them or know them by name or know their most popular songs. It's definitely something different in a genre of, almost inherent, sameness.

I hope this means they'll pick up the slack. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Because I'm so bored of H!P and I got addicted to this song recently too. My heart is with H!P still, but please interesting again. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

And as a warning to all, I want to say I will explode if this thread turns into a hate fest between idol groups so it better not go that way. I don't want to hear such unnecessary hate.

April? So H!P's recent 80s sound phase was just a coincidence? <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' /> Damn...

Songs are popular because they're catchy? There's a novel Idea. UFA better jump on this. I'm sure they're tired of trying to make popular songs with the exact same fucking arrangements for the past 10 years.

All jokes aside, If this means UFA starts making K-POP quality idol music, I'm all for it.

GEE GEE GEE GEE BABY BABY BABY

I don't believe UFA will learn anything from this.

H!P used to have some really catchy songs, but not nowadays anymore. =/

OR they're going to copy the remix version somehow...

If they are looking for a catchy insta-hit song inspiration they need to look somewhere else as far as I'm concerned. I listened to Gee twice on separate occasions, the first time I was like "wth is this and why is it so damn repetitive", although I may have had an unusual spike in my musical quality expectations that they. The next time I heard it I thought it was a passable but also forgettable generic pop fluff. In either case I forgot the supposedly super-catchy brain-drilling chorus melody the same day and can't remember it now despite thinking very hard while looking at the "lyrics". So yeah...

The overall impression I had reminds me of Hinoi Team somehow. The difference, however, is that almost all Hinoi Team's singles (even the lesser ones) were insta-hits with me that burned into my brain on the first listen. Gee is just not sticking with me.

I think you are just biased against anything that's in competition with Morning Musume after 2006. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/meh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I'm gonna randomly sing GEE GEE GEE GEE BABY BABY BABY BABY around you now. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /crazy.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cryalot:' />

OMG I agree. I was irritated with Gee and everything for being so damn catchy. It is seriously the catchiest song I've heard in my entire life.

And of course it made me a snsd fan.

So it's a f'ing great thing that UFA is paying attention. I really doubt that current Momusu could pull off a SNSD song (one has to accept that all 9 girls can sing VERY well), but if it was as well produced as Gee is, I'd be ecstatic.

I think Gee is an okay song, but I didn't understand the intense love for it a few months ago or whenever it came out. But I never understand the most popular of the popular songs.

But I find it hard to believe that the producers didn't know what Gee was. I mean, I guess the audition was in Korea, but even I know the song. Isn't that their job to know what people like? I'd accuse them of being severely insular in their production, but I assume that's the root cause of the Up-Front problems.

Under normal circumstances, I'd argue that it's not necessarily Up Front's job to keep up with what's working and popular in other countries so much as it's their job to figure out what's working at home first - but in this case, since UFA/H!P is trying to expand into Asia you'd think they'd be paying attention to what's going on in other Asian countries.

It's the Korean wave, you guys! Korean stuff is seeping into everything, so I guess we'll soon develop... Korean weaboos.

Honestly, I feel saddened to see SNSD get so much attention - I feel they're a very mediocre group <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':eekrun:' />

Ditto on that question. I can understand that most of their music is mediocre (the only songs I like are Beginning, Gee, and Destiny), but they have such great voices.

I consider them to be extremely mediocre singers - but I have this same feeling about Momusu as well, so I'm not biased - I'm not into Momusu these days either.

There's one member I have some feeling of annoyance towards, as well, what with her "Alicia Keys is pretty... for a black person." comment and some other stuff XD

I much prefer Big Mama as far as female kpop groups go.

Since when has female pop groups EVER been about vocal talent? as far as Japanese groups go, absolutely nothing comes to mind when it comes to groups with all around good singers (Except maybe The Possible, but that's just my personal bias). SNSD is above standards in my opinion, at least none of them really need to Lip Synch during concerts because that's the only time they're on key. It's all about appeal in the girls, and maybe musical talent second.

That Big Mama group seems decent. But Old school Morning Musume are about on par as well. Hell, they were some of the better singers to come out. (The only thing that ever bugged me was the way their voices mixed in early songs. I think it was Nacchi/Kaori melodies that really made my ears bleed.)

They aren't, but in a music group, I look for talent and good music xD so we look at it differently.

Curiously, I've always found SNSD to be vocal leaps above H!P - SM Entertainment has a reputation for manufacturing idols with very polished, trained voices, and even though I don't even really care for SNSD, I will admit they are all above-average vocalists.

Example: Singing one of their ballad songs live.

It's not perfect, but it is live, and I'd venture to say the girls are better vocalists than most of present H!P, and probably a large part of past H!P, too.

See, in Korea, girl groups are on the rise (SNSD, Wonder Girls, Kara, After School, 2NE1, T-ara, the list goes on and on)... honestly, MM could learn a lot from them. MM has a stigma, but SNSD had a large and stringent anti-fan base that they've managed to somewhat overcome, and the Wonder Girls manage to work around the fact that 1/5th of their group is a girl with a vocal, er, prowess roughly equivalent to Sayumi's.

I'm saying all this, and I don't even LIKE SNSD or WG. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... popper.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I'm just acknowledging that on a sheer scale of marketability (which stems from a lot of things), they've got quite a few legs up on current MM.

Please look at the dates of topics before posting in them, if it's well over a few months old (and this one's over six months old) unless you have something new and important to the topic (meaning real info or an in depth opinion or something) don't bump topics.

That being said Snsd pretty much owns and I'm up to 100 gigs of video so far from them, should be 200 by the end of next week or so. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':weeeh:' />
