Insert Scooby Doo "WHHAAAAAAAT?"
I've hardly been in the H!P scene lately, though their LA concert did refresh my love slightly, and I've never adored Koharu. But she grew into her weird lanky body and was a really cute background addition to PVs. I find that I have actually liked seeing her as part of the group dynamic in a polished project. And her ridiculous screaming was fun occasionally, too. I had an inkling she'd leave after Kirari popularity, but that was ages ago. And even then, I just thought she'd leave Momusu.
I'm not shedding any tears, but I'm not dancing either. Best of luck, oh loud one, whatever vague thing you're going off to do.

Re: Koharu Graduating From H!P
It might not be a scandal or anything, but maybe it's over money, or something in the contract, that she won't go along with anymore.... There are a lot of possiblities.
The idea of her being in M-Line or TNX or whatever, though, it weird. She doesn't seem like she would fit.

Re: Koharu Graduating From H!P
Debuting Koharu as a real solo artist is a terrible idea! That'd be almost like debuting Mano Erina as a solo artist!
... Oh, wait.
Well, the Kirarin stuff was interesting, at least, and Anataboshi is still my jam. I don't really care one way or the other about Koharu, and I'm not sure her [horse] face is really... right... for a model, but all the power to her, I guess.
I've been waiting for some new blood, so bring on the 9th gen! Please try to pick out a few that don't suck, Tsunku? (Take some of the Koreans from Tokyo Girl!)
edit: re: possible mini-scandal: My personal thoughts are that H!P & Tsunku sometimes work in mysterious & strange ways beyond human comprehension. Maybe Niigata & a legitimate arena were beyond the budget of H!P?

Whoa 4 years?! It feels like yesterday she joined the group!
Well I was never quite a Koharu fan but I did enjoy her Kirarin songs. Koharu was quite unique and growing into a very pretty woman. It is great she is branching out but like others, I wonder about the group even more now...
Good thing auditions are always fun!

Re: Koharu Graduating From H!P
I don't think the lack of an arena concert makes this graduation look anything sudden. MM haven't held a concert in an arena since Yossi's graduation as themselves, and heck, even the summer concert this year didn't feature an arena (the Tokyo concerts were held at the Nakano Sun Plaza). If anything, given their current condition, an arena concert would IMMEDIATELY scream graduation (and have us placing bets on 5th or 6th gen). If anything, I blame Berryz (back in 2005) for starting the trend of graduating members at the end of concert tours (see Maiha).
For me, the question that's really nagging me is whether or not Koharu (and Erika) are leaving H!P and signing with another agency, or whether they're being shuffled around to, like someone said, TNX or Nice Girl Project or whatever. Koharu - if she's staying within UFA management - is going to be the trend for following graduations, if they occur.
Koharu's graduation is going to be the second time MM has one in the Shinjuku hall - the very first one was Fukuda Asuka's, way back in 1999. It makes the two of them, along with Ishiguro Aya, to have positively tiny graduations.
I'm not really happy with how UFA's handling this. It's not just a matter of the issue with the calendars, but they had been dropping hints about a member change for a long time now. Their manager mentioned 'something new' in the fall, Takahashi basically admitted to a line-up change in a web article (dig around H!O), and Tsunku discussed auditions at AX. And then UFA drops this after they've been selling FC tickets for the winter concert, it seems. (They've posted a message that there won't be any refunds for those who got their tickets.)
Frankly, Koharu and Tsunku's lack of a plan make it sound like she wanted out of MM first, future careers second. On one hand you have her saying that she wants to try modelling (out of the blue, really), and then Tsunku's talking about a solo career - musically, we assume, because otherwise it's not relevant to him. Back when she first joined, she'd said on interviews that she wanted to adopt a cool personality like Yossi and Miki, and if this cooling/training period for her lets her successfully move on to a more mature presentation (not that H!P has had a good track record with this), then I wish her the best of luck.

Tomorrow, I will make a pie. It will be called "Koharu leaves H!P" pie, and it will be the. most delicious. pie. ever.
I think I might shed a single tear.

I actually wondered if Koharu was leaving UFA all together - and that might account for the slim "graduation" farewell concert. Not that it would really matter as H!P is where idols go to die. It would make sense for her to leave and be a model. Somehow a modeling life never struck me as "out of the blue" because Koharu was likely approached about it since she (like Umeda) is unusually tall.

Re: Koharu Graduating From H!P
As a big fan of Koharu, I'm sad about this. But not terribly surprised. As I've noticed more than once in my writings about MM, Koharu has always been on a different wavelength from the others. Which has been good for the group, because her antics have injected a little of the entertainment value that's been missing since Mari and 4th Gen all left.
If she pursues a solo singing career, I hope she stays away from the kiddie anime songs she's been singing. She can do better.
Still, I think she's cut out to be a great fashion model. I first noticed this in the little photobook that accompanied the limited edition of the Rainbow 7 album back in 2006. She and Sayumi photograph the best out of the current lineup. All she needs is a top-ranked agency and some great photographers. But I don't know that she's willing to leave Japan and try her luck on the international circuit. Learning English would help. (And getting her teeth fixed.) But I'd be happy if she succeeded at this.
I'm going to do a blog entry on this and include the transcript of the Koharu piece of my interview with MM at AX. The question was about her career aspirations.

Re: Koharu Graduating From H!P
I still feel weird when people call Koha tall, seeing as she's only barely 5'3 XD the current Momusu line up is very short (Ai, Reina, Linlin, and Risa all being below average even for Japanese/Chinese)

Really? She's one of the worst singers to enter H!P, what with managing to be not just tone deaf but to have an incredibly irritating voice as well. I don't even think she should be allowed near anime songs.

You're a funny, funny guy! For someone who's frequently critical of entertainment media based on a "quality" level, are you seriously that taken aback by people reacting to the departure of an undeniably poor singer from a singing group? Especially one that's been poked fun of since the day she joined? Don't fret, little Newty, Tsunku's bringing back your precious little Koha-bear after she learns how to hold a note without breaking it in half. And she might even come back as a model, so you'll have even more material to fap to!

Huh I thought she was about 5'4" but seemed taller due to her proportions. But in any case, avg height for young Japanese women is probably 5'2'' (older gens probably 5"), Teen models are usually around 5'4'' (Kitagawa Keiko was the top Seventeen model but she is only 5'3").
Now why isn't Kumai Yurina modeling, is the real question.
Edit: some online sources are saying Koharu is 163 cm, which is closer to 5'4" and considered taller for a Japanese girl.

To be honest, I think I'd be a little more torn up if it was Ai. Not that I don't like Koharu, it's just she really never was anything special inside MM. Yeah she had personality, but they haven't really had anything to show personality in lately. Not to mention the Group will benefit vocally.

Koharu is actully taller... on a talk show they did when promoting RB (I think) they had a question to name all MM members taller then 165 cm, koharu and aika was against each other, koharu named herself as one of the names, but ai said that when she ask koharu for her height she said she is about 164.5, this was a year ago, so I think she might have passed 165 cm...
I must say I think koharu leaving is quite a shock, as she is less then 5 years in MM, on one side koharu had a quite wide fanbase (as I see her solo singles sells) and also big group of antis...
Koharu is one of the weakest vocals, and with her leave, the vocal level of the group rise...
It's funny yo mentain that sayumi was koharu mentor, and koharu quit before her...

Re: Koharu Graduating From H!P
If you look at pictures where Koharu is standing next to Ai, Reina, or Risa, it looks like quite a big height difference... Much bigger than 3 inches.
I think a lot of the sites that list her height have it from earlier, near where she first joined. She has grown quite a bit since then, and at her age it wouldn't surprise me if she grew even another inch before she's at her final height.

At least Koharu will have to get exciting songs to have a career, since there's no instrument angle.
If she's moving to M-line, will those soloists get some new damn material sometime soon?

I'm a bit sad to see her go. I was just warming up to her. This is the first member for me where I've seen a MM member come and go while I was into them, but now I'm a bit excited for the future of MM and the possible auditions.

Re: Koharu Graduating From H!P
Tsunku's blog post on it:
Okay, so I announced Kusumi Koharu's graduation recently.
I'm sure fans were surprised, but I think it's better to announce things like this suddenly, so please understand.
As for Kusumi, she was a bit puzzled at first, but she accepted it firmly, and as you can see from her comment, she decided to move on, and looks like she is hopeful for her new future. She intends to do her best as a Morning Musume member until 12/6, which marks the end of current concert tour, "MM Concert Tour 2009 Aki-Nine Smiles".
Therefore, you better not miss this tour, and we're looking forward to seeing you, all over Japan!
So basically Tsunku thinks Koharu would be much better solo, and for that reason she needs to get the hell out of Momusu.
Any questions?

I'm sure this is an UFA move to make more profit and I guess make it seem like M-Line is doing something, and of course Kusumi accepted it firmly. It's not like she can say no and stay in Morning Musume. UFA will not have that. Idk I like UFA conspracies. Didn't this same type of "graduation" happen with Maki Goto too?

Yup, smells like a the usual UFA-needs-money-and-we-can-profit-of-_____ plan.
I'm not sad about this anymore, honestly. Morning Musume will move on and get an even worse singer/dancer (I mean, they chose Aika so...) and everyone will cry over it. Koharu was good for the group (even if her singing was horrid) and MM is moving towards 'boring' with her graduation.

Sorry, no, I like Koharu, but go back and find that video of Koharu singing Furusato during her audition, and then go find an Aika audition video. She's nowhere near as bad as Koharu was. Even if she is now, Koharu's had 2 years of vocal training on her and probably a lot more intensive vocal training since she had to do solo work. Aika also improved her dancing incredibly from the time of her audition to Egao YES Nude. Please stop hating on Aika to cover up your sadness for (people being happy about) Koharu leaving. She's an angel.
