iPad
This thing came out on yesterday in the US to much hate and hype, as I'm sure you're well aware. Did anyone here get one, or have a chance to try someone else's?
To me it's very interesting, and has been since it was announced. It's a giant bag of contradictions, according to everyone's collective opinion! It's a giant iPod Touch, which is its best and worst feature. It's too expensive and reasonably priced all at once. It tries to do too much and does so little, ending up doing nothing well and everything nicely at the same time. It's completely useless and amazingly useful.
I didn't bother posting about it when it was announced, since everything since then until release would all be crap speculation. But now it's been released, so I'm curious to hear some thoughts on it, hopefully from people who have actually used it. And in a few weeks, when I have more time and as I use it more, I'll see if I can give it a good and thorough review. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Re: iPad
Haven't used it, but I've still got 'pinions! On the most basic level, I see it as a toy because, somehow, it's even less complex than OSX. Good for consumption, bad for creation. I guess you probably want more info from someone who's used it so I'll probably stop there.
Maybe.
Maybe.
Re: iPad
You guys might see this as just another "oh Ap hates something... again" post, but this time I do it with absolute passion !
I absolutely hate everything crapple stands for and everything they ever invented, they should die a fast death. There is absolutely no reason to buy a product of them, unless you are extremely superficial and don't care for superio products at a lower price.
EDIT:
To be more specific about this new thing; Tablet PCs have been around since several years now, the same thing applies as with every other crapple product... what I said above.

The only thing I could find useful for it besides making lame jokes about its unfortunate name, is using that one Sketch app I got for my iPod touch which is an amazing app but it could be so much greater on a bigger screen. ;'D
Oh and maybe Bejewelled for sure. It's a total waste of technology, otherwise. Now if it had some sort of cool 3D feature I might reconsider. And you KNOW since it's apple there will be a totally new version by Christmas. That's one thing I hate about Apple.
I bet it's great if you're on the go all the time and need a giant ipod touch to play with since apparently it's not cool to have three inch videos anymore. (I could have told you that when the iPod video first came out. Who wants to squint at a screen that small? ) Or play anything on a screen that small.

Re: iPad
I haven't used one, but from what I've read about it, it sounds like a cool idea that needs a lot of work.
I like that it has the ability to do what iPhone/iPod Touch does on a bigger screen - if, for instance, I wanted to lay in bed/on the couch/some other comfortable place that's not at my computer chair and watch shows I downloaded, it would be a good medium for that. Or alternatively, if I was traveling and wanted access to the internet and some of my videos but didn't want to lug my laptop around, it would be great for that. I can't think of a time when I've been traveling and I needed much more functionality than that (unless it was for work, in which case I'd have to take a work laptop anyway). On top of that, I'm sure it won't be long before there are iPad versions of most popular game apps, and some of them could definitely benefit from a bigger screen. Then it has the kindle-esque feature - again, probably something I would only use to save space for travel, as I've never been really into e-books. But I can definitely see the plus for people with vision issues, like my dad.
But the price is way to expensive for the use I described above. If you really wanted to use it for internet while traveling, you'd want to pay for Wireless AND 3G, so that you'd never be stuck somewhere with no available (or free) wireless. Which...drives the price up like crazy. Another issue is that it seems to run like an iPod/iPhone in that the content you put on it is added via iTunes - meaning I couldn't just throw a bunch of videos on there via USB, I'd have to convert them to an iPod format (I think this is the case?)
I was reading a review in Macworld that said the keyboard is pretty awkward too - it's a little too squished for regular typing, but too wide for thumb typing, which works really nice on iPhone. It might just be something you have to get used to, but it seems like the recommendation is to get a usb keyboard...which kind of kills the "compact/portable" aspect.
I have a feeling that like most products, it'll get better and cheaper with time. Add flash support, allow it to run multiple apps, find a fix for the issue with widescreen videos, make it easier to add files without having to go through iTunes, and bring the price down - then it might be pretty cool. For now, I'd rather just get a small macbook or really, just stick with my iPhone.

This already exists. it's called a netbook.

Re: iPad
YES Valerie. I don't quite see why this is necessary, given the explosion of netbooks in the last 3 years. I already have something tiny that lets me go online and watch stuff. It cost me $300 and I love it.
I AM interested in buying a kindle. The i-pad readability and interactive quality was okay -- easier to read-- but, it had no function to take notes on your e-books so, it isn't useful to me whatsoever.

Exactly, you can even get netbooks with touchpad, if you really want to go for that gimmick.

I haven't exactly heard great things about netbooks though - literally every person I know that's had one has had problems with theirs. They're also still bigger than iPads, because the keyboard isn't part of the screen. I'm not saying the iPad is any better - I'm sure it's got it's share of bugs, being a new piece of technology. And like I mentioned in the other half of my post, it seems like the on screen keyboard isn't as functional as it should be.

The keyboard isn't really that bad. I'm typing this reply on one now and I don't feel like it's hard at all. Although I do question why the "f" and "j" keys have a graphic of the little bumps on them...that makes no sense.

Normal keyboards have that too.
It's because at night you often can't see what's written on the keys, so you just can "feel" where the F and J keys are.
I don't know why TnB seems to not like netbooks, but I'm perfectly happy with mine.
