T3 was really hard and, even with a tutorial, I never understood why I wasn't doing good and I'm usually pretty good at city games. I just didst feel that what I did was very effective even when I did what it told me to. But it's been a while since I played my unpatched prerelease version...

I actually only found one mission in Tropico 3 hard.

However, it does take some time for every thing you do to start working, e.g. farms need several months before they produce crop etc.

Had a few days to process and I'm ready to talk about DJ MAX Portable: Clazziquai Edition. Note, my experience comes with the context of being hardcore into DJMP2 for the past month or so. I'll break this down into section points.

Song List: Don't let the title fool you, you will only be playing about 40% Clazzi-related songs when you go through Club Tour, at least for the half of it I've finished thus far. More on Club Tour in a bit. There are some really great tracks on here, no question, but, given the core system of advancement, I'm not getting the breadth of the catalog of songs. Overall, the range of songs, from P2 to PC, has really polarized. Hardcore songs have become more hardcore, milder songs have become softer, electronic songs have become much more electronic, and hip hop songs have become much more...hoppy. It all feels more processed. Clazzi-related songs hare really some of the best, but they feel few and far between. There are also a number of songs from older DJMPs.

Reward/Unlockings: Portable 2's song unlocking system was, clear it on a certain button mode a la IIDX and unlock it in freestyle mode for that button mode. In Clazziquai, you unlock songs proprietarily in Club Tour, essentially how DDr Supernova worked, except you don't even buy songs, you just randomly unlock them at some point. Club Tour makes you play through specific songs and playlists in different clubs that you play in order. You don't even get to choose your button mode. It's so rigid and controlling. DJMP2 gave you unlockable characters, notes, and gear, all of which had their own effectors (HP values, amounts of auto, fever boost, etc.) and you bought what you wanted with the gold you earned from playing tracks anywhere. In Portable Clazziquai, characters, note, and gear are decorative only. Since these things mean nothing, there is a terribly smaller amount of them too. The game will just unlock these as you play through club tour. The effectors that you would normally buy also unlock in Club Tour. Apparently, the fever meter is not only an unlockable effector, you don't get 5X/MAX effector from the get go. God this game is not satisfying or fulfilling.

Graphics: The background animations are HUGELY improved over DJMP2's flash-based animations. It seems that most of the new original songs are based on a new rendering engine? There is a yellow icon on these videos and they all share the same rendering style. The Clazzi-songs are from music videos? They're a different style, but they also fit. The interface looks just broken and, while there is still that good ol' Krrran polish and gloss, the necessity of it seems like a hindrance. The default gear has kill-yourself amounts of aliasing and the UI tries to pull off this extruded and zoomed style which just looks too sharp. Also, with the small amount of actual Clazzi-content, there is a lot of Clazzi-based resources that are just randomly placed. Like, why does Tohoshinki Member #4 need to be on the menu for 4b?

Gameplay: Arguably the hardest section to eff up and it really has become stiff. The small aspect of using the analog nub for rolls has become watered-down. You no longer need to roll for holds and they have added nub notes where you don't hold, but they always come in groups and there is a loss of accuracy on these new notes because they're really big. It's not like pressing a button a millimeter. It's contrived. Another for-nubs change is that, when you activate fever, your speed multiplier doesn't change which I thought was a really nice challenge. There are two new button modes: 2b and 4bFX. 2b (two button) uses left/up and triangle/circlewith a HUGE middle for nub holds. Being made to play through 2b in Club Tour is a nice warm-up at first, but it feels so restricting later on. 4bFX on the other hand feels like a lot for as soon as it's introduced. It plays like normal 4b, but you also use the L and R shoulders as buttons (you can only change speed when paused in 4bFX). You get introduced to it very soon in Club Tour and the game doesn't even tell you to use the shoulder buttons or how those notes look. On the lighter side, when you unlock songs for free play, they're available in every button mode. That bugged me in P2.

tl;dr: Clazziquai is not recommendable. Maybe if you need a fix, but no. It's like any DDR since Extreme 2, you have to unlock EVERYTHING. The feeling of mastering a game and becoming good and that really classic Asian game-style of a game you can play forever is just not here. It's the American Cheese of DJ MAX. I'll be trying Black Square next.

I strongly dislike kotaku, but I couldn't find any other english site as a source right now:

Well holy shit.

I somehow hoped it was still being developed and released by another company. While I don't expect it to be mindblowing, I will check it out definitely, just to see all the ideas they were working on in the past ~13 years.

I just bought the Great Adventure Bundle 2010. It's a great deal for $20.

It contains:

The Whispered World (this game looks really nice)

Jack Keane (never heard of this game)

King's Quest Collection (ah, nostalgia! I still have the cd's of all the king's quest games somewhere)

Penny Arcade Adventures episode 1 (been wanting to play this)

I'm hoping enough people buy the bundle so that 'Puzzle Agent' and 'Sam & Max Season 2' are unlocked as well.

PA Episode 1 and 2 are great games, but they're not making any more. Instead, they're just finishing online in written form.

With Cataclysm coming up and friends nearby playing it, I started back on the WoW after over a year away. I probably wouldn't have, but I'm going to be in DC all next week for work, and the hotel's got free internet, but I doubt they've got anything to hook a game console to, so laptop gaming it is.

I really want to like Scott Pilgrim, but damn, they're sure making it difficult for me.

Let's list the good things first: Paul Robertson! Paul friggin' Robertson making a real game. And the stuff he's done for the game just looks great, it's really funny and clever and there's a million things to see. It really is quite a lot like playing one of his movies, sans quite the amount of guro and sexual deviance.

The music is by chiptune-superstars Anamanaguchi, and already here we're starting to go into muddy territory. They're a great match for the graphics and the theme of Scott Pilgrim, but they are unable to make anything but the same song over and over. Either they were given absolutely nothing to base their music on, or they simply are too limited to create a soundtrack for a game.

The biggest issues are with the gameplay though. The game feels really, really sloppy. It feels like it wasn't playtested at all--the most basic things are wrong with it. Running doesn't feel right; you often get jumped by multiple enemies and are completely unable to get out of it (there is no period of invincibility when you get up, so you can get pummeled endlessly until you die); once you upgrade your character a bit, the game becomes ludicrously easy; when you walk towards the next fight sequence, you often get punched out by an enemy that's almost completely off-screen, with no time to react... Etc. They also removed the online co-op in an attempt to rush the game out in time for the movie, which is of course a monumental sin. The whole game just feels unfinished, rushed out (which I now know is actually true, but I didn't know that when I first played it).

All in all, it's fun to play multiplayer co-op (if you still have any local friends, invite them over for beers and this game, and you'll have a bunch of fun), and it's not the worst ten bucks I ever spent, but it's a game with a lot of issues and probably won't usher in the neo-retro era, which I was hoping it would do. Disappointing.

Review and preview time!

I helped myself to Telltale Games' first "pilot" game, Puzzle Agent the other day after being rather impressed with the demo. To be frank, PA is a Professor Layton clone set in Fargo. You're the sole member in the FBI's Puzzle Research division and you are sent to Scoggins, Minnesota to get the factory that makes erasers for the White House back up in running. Through the investigation, you make narrative strides through puzzle solving and if you get stuck, you chew (ABC) gum to get a hint. The game has a great deal of style, charm, and atmosphere (there are legitimately scary moments that you will not expect), but my biggest issue is the length and ending. Granted, $10 is good for 3.5hrs of gameplay and ~35 puzzles, but the game needs at least another 30 minutes to tie up the ending. It's just so abrupt and, maybe it'd fit if there was a definitive choice to continue the narrative in a future episode, but as it is now, it's not enough. The puzzles are notably repetitive for only ~35 total puzzles, but the wholly original puzzles are creative and decently challenging. The game runs on the Telltale Tool which has its share of imperfections, but seeing what the engine does with SBCG4AP and Sam & Max, its versatility and functionality for such a distinctive looking aesthetic is respectable. I'd recommend getting the Great Adventure Bundle 2010 ($20 for 6 games vs $10 for half?) and also grabbing Penny Arcade episode 2 because 1) EP1 is really good, 2) EP2 should be greater than or equal to EP1, 3) maybe if people buy EP2, they'll decide to do EP3 at some point and 4) supporting Penny Arcade is nice.

In three days (10th), a new-ish Japanese indie game translation will be released, Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale. The game follows Recette, a young girl whose hero father has disappeared and left her with a sizeable debt. To make sure the bank gets its money, they send Tear, a fairy, to consult Recette so that she can repay the debt instead of foreclose on her house. Over five weeks, Recette must pay off a sizeable debt and growing payments by turning her house into an item shop in an RPG world! Recette can buy items or find them in a expertly deep dungeon system, and sell them to customers at your own mark-up. Your shop is totally customizable and your changes attract different customers! Not only can you sell items, you can also buy items from customers and recommend them things based on what they want (weapons, food, etc.). There's also a fusion system to be had. The game is only $18 if you buy the game before release and it is available on Steam and as DRM-free downloads through Impulse and Gamersgate. Try the demo, play through your free week (and save you game for the full version!), and seriously consider buying this great game. The localization is stunning and these developers have high hopes for future projects. The original game is from 2007 and this small project has now outsold Civ V in pre-sales on Steam! GO GO LITTLE GUYS! CAPITALISM, HO!

It helps to go to the market first and buy some walnut bread or apples. You can take those into the dungeon to heal. There aren't any truly impossible enemies. Watch out for the pig guys though, they have a flaming dash and on level 4, they can throw rocks.

YAY! I finally did it. But it took sooooooo~ many tries!!! At least I did meet the bill on the first time. But now my fingers are itching for more. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... ryalot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':dammit:' /> I CAN'T WAIT A DAY!!!!

Also, my brother renewed my WoW account. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /ph34r.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';/' /> And now we have an extra account for aine to play. I might actually start playing again. Aine's playing a warlock. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /weeeh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';/' /> If he likes it enough, we might do a refer-a-friend thing and get triple exp. But I'll lose so much of my life. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /ph34r.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> My brother said it took him 18 hours to get a level 60 that way. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... hahaha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';/' />

I don't know what class to play guys! I'll only play BE on horde. I already picked cleric and hunter before... Hm...

Here's my cute purple dinosaur I have as my pet.

Hm, what else. I finished the first Professor Layton game, but I can't get myself to do much in the 2nd. I kinda like puzzles, but the only motivation for me to do it is so I feel less of an airhead. I think right now, I'm in the mood for games where I can be retarded and just do whatever. I tried to play Machinarium a couple of months ago. It's seriously really cute... but it makes me think way too hard.... I should probably play so my brain doesn't rot and I get alzheimers, I guess.

I sound so stupid when I talk about games.

Finished Recettear! It tok about 5-6 hours to get through the main campaign. It was really enjoyable and the demo doesn't even have all the complexities of the full game. It was a real nail-biter to see if I could make that final loan payment. There looks to be a lot that you can do after the game (endless, new game+, survival modes). I definitely will keep playing just to do more dungeons (I only did the first two!). GO GET THIS GAME.

Thanks for the tip. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Playing on my brothers' accounts, but I didn't know he already made the max. amount of characters. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... pyeyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> So Aine is clumsily playing a level 60 creepy female troll shaman. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> While I got my pretty BE hunter!

Honestly, my brothers and his fiance just leveled all their characters as fast as they could without any stopping. This shaman doesn't have any of the basic water/fire totem. And the warlock doesn't have any pets besides its imp. It's pretty sad. <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... /laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> So all the players we've interacted with in Outlands must think we're major noobs.

I wonder how you get rich in WoW. My brother's fiance is loaded.

Forget Halo: Reach and all those other huge games. The game of the year just snuck in under the radar: KoF Sky Stage! How can you beat a bullet hell shooter starring the King of Fighters cast and with more storyline and continuity than any KoF game since 2002? Awesome!

Woot! Not only was Spider-Man shown for Marvel VS Capcom 3 at the Tokyo Game show, but so was Albert Goddamn Wesker! And apparently info was leaked that X-23 will also be in it.

Never mind the game (which I'm sure'll be great, so never mind the never minding,) I want more of these trailers extended into a full-out movie! I had to rewatch Cap vs helicopter 3 times!

That just HAS to be the same trailer-team that made the Street Fighter IV stuff. Absolutely freakin' awesome. I want them to release trailers all the time! Not even movies, just trailers.

Regarding TGS10, I'm excited about Catherine and Asura's Wrath. Oh, and Galgun of course!

EDIT: Oops forgot about Bullet Soul!

Catherine: Looks really cool. Nice to see the Persona team bump up their graphics. Now we're my Persona 5?!

Asura's Wrath: he so mad -OR- "Street Dynasty Four-iers"

Galgun: Stay classy, Japan.

Seconded, but they did say it's in production, and that's all I really need to know. Also, Catherine is in the same universe thanks to Atlus remaking their game over and over and over! <img src='http://mm-bbs.org/public/style_emoticon ... umbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Has there been any word on how/if Catherine will play? The trailer is definitely intriguing.

Haven't seen anything new from it, though... But yeah, that one too of course. And the HD re-releases of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus too! EDIT: Guess I was just stupid last time I looked for it. Awesome new gameplay trailer!
